Anybody Know What Happened to Amol Cycle?

I called Amol Cycle in Dumont, NJ to schedule some service work and it seems that the number has been disconnected
Have they gone out of business?
Amol was one of the first BMW motorcycle dealers in the America, but gave up their franchise a number of years ago because they would not (or could not) make the financial commitment that BMW corporate required in order to sell BMW Motorcycles and accessories in an "appropriate environment"
Although Amol gave up their franchise, they still sold BMW parts and performed repairs on BMW bikes. Their mechanics were talented, and I can only hope that they are not gone for good.
If Amol is closed that leaves BMW Manhattan as the closest location for parts and service and I don't want to have to ride into Manhattan to get my bike worked on.
It seems to me that there is a bigger fundamental issue with BMW Motorcycles and their dealers
I purchased my 1999 K1200 RS from Westchester BMW, unfortunately they closed their doors
Rich Santoro, formerly the service manager at Westchester BMW set up an independent repair shop called Beemer Cycles, a place where you could take your BMW motorcycle for competent service and repair without having to pay the dealership rates, unfortunately they closed their doors
Garden State BMW - Not too far from my house, unfortunately they closed their doors

Why can't BMW Motorcycles maintain a presence in Northern New Jersey, a huge market for their product?

Anybody know of an independent motorcycle repair shop in the NY Metro Area that is competent enough to work on BMW's

Jim,

Was this the shop near the Delaware in Philipsburgh? If so, Bill mentioned the other day that they relocated near by their old shop.

Sorry I can not offer greater details, but give Billg a shout.

"If Amol is closed that leaves BMW Manhattan as the closest location for parts and service and I don't want to have to ride into Manhattan to get my bike worked on" HEAVENS NO! Your better of letting John Deere work on it!

Jim, Phillipsburg is 50 miles from my house, got to be at least 70 for you. Your only other choice is Cross Country in Metuchen. It's about 5 miles south of the parkway on RT27. It's a little better than riding in Manhattan, but not much. If you want to learn how to do it yourself I'd be glad to help, I've got no bike to ride, working on one is the next best thing!! Bill

What about Cherry Hill BMW???? They might of changed their name to Desomon (I don't think my spelling is correct). Go to the BMW site and you can do a search of the closest dealer.

Personaly I think the service work on BMW motorcycles is a little out of line, price and interval.

I do all my own work, I could never afford this type of motorcyle if I had to take it to the dealership for service.

Good luck Furman

Yeah, too bad about Amol's. It was a nice small caring dealership for a very long time. Since they lost the BMW line in the late 90's they've been struggling and I think Richard thought it was time to retire. They'll be missed.

Re: Anybody Know What Happened to Amol Cycle?

Sad news indeed. Drove out to Dumont yesterday from Manhattan before reading this post and found the place shuttered. Big shock. They were absolutely tops, I had major work and mods done on my R80ST and my K100RS over the years although Manhattan BMW is just around the corner from here (try getting a duplicate key from them ! Richard would just go and cut one in 3 minutes ...). Joe Tweedy and Frank were the finest mechanics. Anyone know where they moved to ?

Re: Anybody Know What Happened to Amol Cycle?

Having grown up in Dumont, Amol's was THE motorcycle shop when I was a kid. Selling BMW and Honda, and being a kid in the sixties, it was always an education when me and my pals would check out what was new as each year went by. The Honda 50, then 350, then those 750 fours! Wow! Looked like I was heading for a Honda for my first bike.... until I walked in one day in 1974 and saw the R90S in Daytona Orange!! That changed eveything. Didn't have the dough for the S but did buy an R90/6, threw on Lester mag wheels and a cafe fairing and had one little kick ass beemer that looked great and ran like a top. After 150,000 miles she's a little worse for wear, but I still have her and one day when I have time I'll bring her back to life. You never forget your first!

The folks at Amol's really new motorcycles. They had a full machine shop and knowledgeable mechanics. Karl in parts was an active amature racer. Mom and pop's like Amol's don't exist in the BMW world anymore (Lindner's in New Canaan, CT was another one). Good folks, they will be missed.
