non-ATGATT

There is a bike rally taking place here. I took a short spin at lunch and every BMW I saw (~5) was no helmet, shorts and t-shirt, including several decked out GS's and a K12S.

Re: non-ATGATT

I've seen similar before - folks get to a rally and they gear down while there. Wish I could be so carefree - I can't do it - I would crash just because I wasn't wearing all my gear.

Good for them. I don't feel anything in regards to their choices.

Common at most MOA rallies too. I can't do it either...would be bad karma for sure.

Are you celebrating other riders who are exercising their free will or are you condemning people for behavior that increases the consequences of an accident?

sorry - panama city, FL, USA. I was just commenting that it seemed kind of odd - no judging at all. I personally couldn't do it. Even at 35 mph, it could hurt pretty bad .

Re: non-ATGATT

No doubt about it there are serious injuries/fatalities that result from not wearing proper gear. People say, hey, it's their head or their problem and they should be free to choose. But how does that choice and states that make it legal to go hatless affect the rest of us? Insurance rates? Is there a statistic or study that says people who ride without proper gear actually have accidents at the same rate as people who do. When I talk to guys that ride without a lid or with a bowl on their head that they always ride around at 5 under the limit - they say they ride much more conservatively than all the sport bike guys out there ripping around on public roads. They think those guys ride like maniacs because they're wearing ATGATT - so who's really negatively affecting insurance rates and getting injured more?

Just my two cents Wes but I think riding with or without a helmet is more of a cultural thing. The cruiser guys are more about their "freedom" and they tend to ride slower anyway. All of us have gotten behind packs of cruisers fully helmeted but riding 5 mph below the limit. That's just how they ride. And the sport bike guys riding out here ripping around on public roads, been there done that, I don't think they do that because they're wearing gear, that's just the way they ride and recognize the need to wear gear as a result. This isn't all things in all cases, I've seen sport bike riders with no helmet but more often than not it's the cruiser guys with either no helmet or a brain bucket.

Re: non-ATGATT

I bet I've ridden about 100 miles in the past five years without a helmet in and around my rural Oklahoma town. Reminds me of the old days. I still like it, but it definitely feels wrong.

Re: non-ATGATT

Every time I've crashed, I had a helmet on. Have never crashed while riding lidless. Maybe helmets cause accidents.

My thought is that a helmet is vital for commuting when there's moderate speeds and lots of traffic. Difference between walking away from a spill and severe brain injury. On the freeway, the helmet merely prolongs the agony in between the moment of the crash and succumbing to lethal torso injuries.

As someone who crashed 3 months ago, doing around 100km/hr on the road and around 50km/hr at the moment of impact (figures are exact as I had gopro on my helmet) - I beg to differ. It's difference between life and death. Literally. My head (although I was briefly unconscious) was fine - other parts of my body broken but I'm here to tell the story.
What people decide to wear (or not) doesn't matter to me. I also don't care if my premiums go up because of them, we cannot force everyone into same pigeon box and hide behind some nanny state laws.
Pic of helmet attached, I planted face down.
