Re: KHCR 2018

OK, I'm out.
My Dr.s appointment this morning did not end till 11:45.
I would not arrive before 8:00 tonight and the first half of the ride would be in hard rain, red and yellow on the map.

I have canceled my reservation, so Mani can ask for my room.

I'm gonna miss you guys.

Arrived at Sikeston Mo. At 2:00 today. Saw 95 F near the Mississippi.
Took 31E south to Scottsville, 68 to Land Between The Lakes, then crossed the river near Wickliffe.

Home 812 miles later.

If Deals Gap has 311 curves in 11 miles, I figure that i must have done over 10,000 today in KY and WV. Thanks again for the help with the route MattA!

We didn't take a single pic. There may be some who appreciate that.

GREAT to see y'all all again! We're trying to figure out Arkansas as I speak (OK, as I type but that doesn't sound right.)

She is a very special lady. And this October we have been together 30 years. I still can't believe I won the marriage lottery. A big thanks to everyone who made Julie feel welcome (not you Lee, she has an axe ready for you). She said several times how wonderful y'all treated her.

Hwy 160, Doniphan to Alton is 38 miles of constant curves.
Only met 3 cars and 1 semi on that stretch.
Spending the night in a old Route 66 motel.

Made it home about 5:30. Much cooler today with a high of 85.

Went 20 to 30 miles out of the way to avoid a lighting storm and heavy rain.
Stopped to visit the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site.

It was a lucky find.
Yesterday we stopped 40 miles south of Cuba before noon for ice cream and water to cool off and checked my phone for motels in the next couple of towns and saw the old motel.
When we arrived the place look good and it took about one second to decide we were calling it a day

The owner was friendly and handed us several keys to check out different rooms and mentioned it was supposed to storm over night and suggested we park in the covered bike parking area.
The bonus was a good BBQ place next door and a good breakfast place a couple blocks away.
We have stayed in Cuba at two different motels in the past and never realized it was on Route 66.

Next year we plan to do a similar route on the way home and plan to stay at the Wagon Wheel Motel again.
Hopefully it will be cooler so we can check out some of the town murals.

The bonus was a good BBQ place next door and a good breakfast place a couple blocks away.
We have stayed in Cuba at two different motels in the past and never realized it was on Route 66.

Cool find indeed. Reminds me of the Blue Swallow in Tucumcari, NM & its owners. They have the same kind of welcoming attitude about their motel. I'm so glad there are those who get excited & are dedicated to preserving Americana & some of the uniqueness of our past.

The owner said it's been a lot of work doing repairs and restorations but the customers make it worth it.
People seem to appreciate and enjoy places like this so this makes her happy.
She said a lot of the customers are from Europe.

Re: KHCR 2018

Just a thought for 2019, Bill Morgan mentioned Slade KY as a great place to ride both for on and off road. There is a small motel there and a Kentucky State Park Lodge.

The area is also know for it's fantastic photo ops.

The hotel is called Li'l Abner Motel and Cottages. I was reading reviews and came across this one, which sounds like us.

" ★★ Motel ok. But I stayed on a weekend and seems to be a destination for groups. Rooms have porch area and one group was outside, including in front of my door, until after midnight talking loudly. Didn't get much sleep."

There is a bbq restaurant next door that opens at 11 am and closes at 9 pm so breakfast will have to be found on the road. Pizza is just up the road as well.

I'm gonna give Eddie a call and see if he wants to meet me over there to ride soon. Maybe after DGR in a few weeks. We can scout out some food stops!

Re: KHCR 2018

I've been impressed and happy with the roads in KY ever since my first experience there some time back.

That said, to me the area around Slade is some of the best the state has to offer. I traveled through this section several times on my way to/from central KY and it NEVER gets old. It goes without saying, but at this point I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY like the roads and PEOPLE in Kentucky.

PS: I figure folks are tired of tire pictures, but the tires on my VFR show that they give KY roads two thumbs up as well.

Re: KHCR 2018

"You can't even tell that it's a car tire can you?"

Nope, not at all... Like I told you guys when the guy left, it was like riding a bull and trying get him to turn in the direction that YOU wanted.

Or... like driving a car and trying lift the outside wheels through the turn so that you could turn in.

Yeah, I think that I'll start "going darkside"... motorcycle tires are just a waste of money.
