New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

I braved the snow to visit the NEC to get a first hand look at the new K1600GT & GTL. Nice looking and not as big as I feared but still quite a bit bigger than my K1300GT. There are some fabulous details and I was getting really tempted but sitting on it - should that be in it - the desire just faded away. This is a big bus of a bike. You sit very upright and a long way back with long RT style bars; maybe you have to balance the weight of the motor. Nice & comfy but no adjustablility and definitley not a sporting feel. Maybe the ride will prove a revelation. For sure it will be smooth and comfortable but I'd bet it lacks the thrill you can get from a K1300. The low reving 6 pot delivers some impressive numbers but it is a low reving and car like compared to the rip you can get after 8000 rpm with the 1300.

What to buy now? After 18months my K1300GT has 20k on it and, fingers crossed, with all the faults sorted under warranty maybe I'll just run it and see what comes along. Honda are putting their v4 to wider use so maybe there'll be a new Pan with a real sporting edge. For sure, there's nothing out there right now to match the K1300GT for touring comfort AND sporting fun. I just can't see the 1600 offering the same mix.

The K1300GT remains king of the sports tourers - they've stopped making them now so grab one while you still can!

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

They haven't stopped making them, nor has BMW announced any plans to do so. This is all somewhat hysterical conjecture. Remember, all BMW bikes are made in one factory in Berlin, and they are not made all at the same time. Sometimes you have to wait.

The BMW people at the show told me GT production has stopped and sales would finish when existing stocks run out.

That is what I was told by two different dealers. Selling from inventory right now.

It's done. One of the head honshos at BMW Motorrad AG did a facebook chat and answered a bunch of questions and he said once inventory of available bikes is sold, no more. In Canada, the bike sold out this summer and is no longer available. I had one as a loaner, loved the ride, but the bike just didn't speak to me like the K16's do.

My dealer has never heard of this. I'll believe it when I hear something from BMW themselves.

If they do drop the GT, it would be a foolish move. Customers will move to the competition in that class. The 6-cylinder K1600GT is NOT in the same class.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

Growing up I was mesmerized by motorcycling from watching flat track racing, Paris-Dakar, street racing, and Captain America. I got back on the bike 7 years ago after a 25 year break and rode a Honda 450, Vulcan 750, R1200C, R1150GS. I finally settled on a 2008 Victory Vision as a long distance touring bike to have better access ground due a shorter inseam. The Germanic tribal ergos on the GT was too tall and top heavy for me. I also bought a K1200S converted with upright bar for the sports factor. I actually never rode a sports bike before am no crouch tiger now. If the K1600GT were out two years ago it would have been a tough decision. Even the Bavarians can learn from the market demand: lower frame on RT, GS, etc. and now a lower seat height tourer with an upright position. May be I will reconsider in 5-6 more years. By then I may have to pare down to a F650twin. LOL

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

According to my dealers site:
De BMW K 1600 GT is de opvolger van de K 1300 GT en heeft maar liefst 6 cilinders,
The BMW K 1600 GT is the successor of the K 1300 GT and has no less than 6 cilinders

De BMW K 1600 GTL volgt eindelijk de K 1200 LT op en zal gaan bewijzen het summum van de luxe tourders te zijn in 2011

The BMW K 1600 GTL finally succeeds the K 1200 LT and will prove to be the ultimate touring machine in 2011

Agreed the 1600 is no replacement for the 1300. No problem. They're not the same bikes. We'll just have to buy the 1600 for Christmas and keep the 1300. Can't have just one bike.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

I can understand the 1600 replacing the aging K12LT, but BMW would be dropping a complete category of bike if they drop the K13GT... if this is true, it is a huge blunder by BMW.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

What are the sales numbers for the K13GT ? How many warranty issues do these machines have influencing the expected revenue ? Will the customers swap it for a new one after a few years or migrating to a different brand ? I really don't know these things about the K13, but take the GS/A as an example. Not likely the company will get rid of that model range anytime soon. They are selling more of those per month in Europe than some other brands sell in a year.

I'm sure that most K bikes have their large share of fans, but it doesn't necessarily mean the manufacturer is always happy with the product if it causes a drain on resources.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

Max BMW said the K1300GT is over, they are selling the last few bikes as Special editions with a blue background designating the model, and that's it. K1600GT will arrive in May. I think they are making a mistake, and if I were in the market they just pushed me to the S.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

Just thinking about a couple of factors. The U.S. and Australia markets are relatively small (10-15%?) segments of the market, and the K1200LTs are probably mostly sold to the U. S. and Australia. The model has not changed in 7-8 years. I wonder whether the K1600GT will turn out to be a more globally appealing model.

I'm in the same boat. No way I'm going bigger than my 12GT. It looks like an S is in my future!

You would still be buying a BMW, - and they would be happy.

They dropped the K1200R [in the US] and the sport F800S and kept the ST.

It does seem strange that BMW keeps bringing out new models that don't sell and have to drop them after a year or two [of course this doesn't apply to the several year old GT, does it?]

We don't see the big picture or have access to focus group results, market research, demographics, etc...

I can tell you that in my home market, the K1300GT never sold well, my dealer tells me buyers would love the engine, but not the riding ergos, much preferring the RT's ergos, and anyone test riding both came back and bought the RT..

The RT is my dealer's best selling bike followed closely by the GS.

He told me last year that the GT will be offered in a deluxe edition (including a top case) then discontinued once the LT replacement arrives. The LT was discontinued in Canada by the end of the 2008 model year.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

One thing I forgot to mention, although I would get an S before the new GT I'm real disappointed with the available colors for the S right now. My preference would be a Black K1300S. Charlie traded a black K1200S which I admired for a K1300S tricolor. An S would be a challenge to pack for a camping trip, but it can be done for sure.

That's why they make paint, Dan... My first K12S was an '05 that started life as a granite gray... I had it painted black. It was unique until BMW started producing black ones in '07... then people thought my '05 was an '07... I would be very surprised if BMW doesn't produce a black K13S soon...

I don't really have any good static profile shots of the bike, Dan...

That will do, I love that bike, best looking BMW in years, but you did post a real nice static shot a while back if I'm not mistaken the bike had custom seats embroidered I think it was Bagster? Any chance I'm right?

Thanks Lee! that's what I'm talking about, with the exception of the decal on the can I love the look of the bike. Can't belive they stopped making them in Black, but that's BMW for ya. The Bagster seat is real sweet. If it functions half as good as it looks it's a home run.

Actually, the first pic is my '05 with the custom paint job. And yes, the Bagster seat is the most comfortable of any I've ever ridden upon...

That's much better looking finishes it perfectly. Like I said if I were in the market that's what I would look to get. Probably would buy a K1300S, and paint it. Center stand is another must have, but for now I'm happy with my GT. Trying to get together with my riding buds to set up a trip out west this year it's looking like Glacier National with 1st day as an iron but day, after Glacier down to Yellowstone via Bear Tooth pass, then back to the right coast. Charlie my compliments you had that bike set up perfect.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

The K1300S looks more appealing each time I see one. Black looks great and is probably the best looking option - the new red is dull & the grey is well.....grey. Lupin looks good in the flesh. Not sure about the luggage options though. The BMW stuff is a bit small for 2 up & my pillion won't come without a top box. I've seen Givi stuff on a K1200S but I think the 1300 has a different tail end set up so I'm not sure that's the answer.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

I hope you are right and there will be a shortage and huge desire for a 1300GT as I plan to sell mine and get a 1600 but not sure yet the GT or GTL. The more it is desired, the more I will get for mine.

Re: New GT: no replacement for the K1300 GT

Very interesting thread to read. And thanks for your impressions of the K16 David. (so far think your comments are the the most reliable of the many we've read).

Reason for the post is that with production ending on the current GT, BMW-NA will be left with just one slant/4, the "S".

Wonder, now, if they would reconsider and bring the K13R to the U.S.? While appeallng, for the most part, to a different type rider than the 13GT; for one thing, the riding positon on the "R" approximates the neutral set-up on the current GT.

It's made by Bagster, in France. Yes, it is as comfortable as it looks. They have a website where you can design your seat out of a myriad of colors, patterns and materials. You have to order through their U.S. distributor. As I recall, it only cost $550, but you have to provide a seat pan. I bought a used seat from Beemer Boneyard, but afterward, my dealer told me he had some old seats laying around that he would have given me... The only drawback to the seat was that the pilot seat area was a little cramped, and the pillion area a little too generous. That was their standard dimension, and if I bought another one, I would have the step moved back at least an inch, depending on your size. It took 5 weeks from order to delivery.
