I wanted to update, just not this way.

RIP my 2009 K1300S. P plater turned in front of me, my view was obstructed by a larger vehicle on my inside lane, nothing I could do except swear to myself before I heard the noise of the impact. She broke her back taking the hit, I was lucky enough to walk away from it (well hobble really) although it was like being rag dolled into a brick wall at 50km/h.

Pictures tell a thousand words as they say. Yes, all the fairings were off the bike to get a new black paint job.

Deposit just made on a nice black 2014 model with 12,000kms on it.

Thanks everyone. Tore all the cartilage across my ribs, various other muscles and lower back, and jarred the @#$@ out of me internally. My spine protector and armour in my leather jacket saved my back. Had X-rays, CT scans all clear. Spent a couple of weeks on the couch. Just have to build up my strength again.

I was lying on the road, after i got breathing again and did the systems check (ie all my extremities were there), I could hear someone shouting to me if I could move as there was fuel leaking on the road. Crawled a little, then he helped me get to the side of the road.

Miraculous escape. That scenario has always been my No. 1 on the list when riding...zero I could do about it this time.

Your Mighty K1300S saved your life. He absorbed the impact then broke after doing everything to defend you. It is great to hear you are ok. 👍🏻

Congratulations on the next steed. A very smart move and now you have spare fairing parts. The best to you.

In Australia drivers get a "Provisional" licence after passing their driving test. Provisional licences which have speed and other restrictions compared to a full licence. Red coloured 'P plates" then green P plates. are displayed on the vehicle. After 3 years they are issued a full licence.

Exactly my thoughts. Any smaller or inferior built bike - I believe I would have been injured much more severely.

Re: I wanted to update, just not this way.

Glad you survived relatively unscathed. Another ATGATT example.

The photos are telling. I would like to see those welds. I do not believe they should have failed like that unless somehow designed to do so in a controlled manner to absorb impact - I doubt that though. I believe the adjacent metal should have torn before the welds separated. If we have any aerospace, aeronautical or nautical structure inspectors out there, I'd like to hear your opinion.

Given the impact was on the opposite side it makes sense to me that the welds split where they did. Factors such as the angle that it occurred, me hitting the front brake a fraction of a second before the collision ... a lot of energy behind it all.

Really glad you are okay another day and the outcome may not have been so favorable. We can replace the bike - you are lucky you are at the least not missing your right leg.

I hope you are back to normal very soon.

Good luck with the new bike post a few pictures when you get it.

geezuz mate, thats no good, hope your feeling better soon.
Sounds like you got a great deal on one of the last low KM's K1300S bikes in Aus. A few low km K1300R's around, but the low km S models are disappearing fast.
I always liked the idea of a spare set of fairings to change the colour of the bike, are they already painted black?
Anyway, glad your ok.

Cheers Mat, the accident was at the end of September. I’m pretty much 100% now, just have to get my strength back.

I have to get the replacement bike from Brisbane and ride it back to Sydney some time before Xmas. I'd say it was a fair/good price given the very low kms. I'm eager to ride a five year newer bike with less kms and compare the gearbox clunk into 1st - mine was pretty clunky ;-)

Re the old fairings I had prepped and put a primer on them - they will probably stay that way now

Re: I wanted to update, just not this way.

Wow! Amazing that you got away from that with all of your bits more or less intact... makes a strong case for upgraded armor. Well done and good luck with your recovery - and lucky you for finding a suitable replacement.

Reminds me of an old adage I've heard - "No substitute for displacement..."

Glad you are OK. I've balled up a few bikes. My philosophy is.... any motorcycle mishap that does not involve ambulances, excess blood and casts ain't too bad.

This True Believer is not concerned about 'how hard it is;' he knows either he wins or dies. He doesn't go home at 17:00, he is home.

While not a welder, I've worked with metal all my life, most applicably here as a machinist, and currently an aircraft engine mechanic, who regularly has a plethora of components/welds non-destructive tested (mag particle, florescent penetrant, x-ray).

That frame weld is 100% bad.. not CRASH bad, original BMW bad.. A weld that splits in half all the way around like that could've been a time bomb waiting to go off. Waiting for the right forces to make it go. A proper weld in this application typically has a cross-section larger than the parent material, making the weld stronger than the parent material (assuming no corrosion or physical damage). It might not've ever broken with normal riding forces, but it for sure was a bad weld from the factory.

Re: I wanted to update, just not this way.

Thanks for the input. I was hoping for reinforcement of my observation. I was an aircraft accident investigator for the U.S. Army for three years and conducted investigations of over 20 major aircraft accidents. My father was a certified welder at a USAF test facility so I have been conversationally exposed to the welder certification process. I do some MIG welding in my hobby.

If I saw those welds in a aircraft accident, those components would be immediately shipped to a lab for evaluation and if causative, possible grounding of all same type aircraft. They jumped out at me like a neon sign.

For some bad there is a possible good. The failure of those welds may have slowed the deceleration rate of the mishap so that injuries were minimized.

Wow Richard! That is some impact! Looks like Pittwater Rd in Narrabeen. Bloody P players are a nuisance around here, mostly distracted by their phones
Glad you’re OK, and hopefully on a new K by now
Perhaps you will consider going to the rally, teaming up with me, as I will be leaving from up the road in St Ives
