K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

I installed my new (used) driveshaft from a 2011 K1300s donor bike today....

HOLLY SHIT!!! What a difference that makes.

Gear changes are alot smoother and the harsh backlash to the gearbox when closing the throttle is gone.

It almost feels like riding my buddys k1300 now!!

The best $200 i have spent so far.

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

Found one, from a 11/2011 K1300S bike with allegedly 326 miles on it for $150.

Hope you're right, and I just didn't spend yet more money on my K12R.... hahahaha!

As a comment, my Fiona is 07/2011 and you can see in my "How to change..." works perfect and no leaks and no reports of problems in that time.

Remember, "S" and "R" have different transmission relationship

Bernardo... regarding my K12R
- Engine from a K12S '06
- Shocks from a K13S '10
- ABS from a K12S '07
- Wheels from a K13S '11
- Swingarm + FD from a K12GT '08
- Steering stabilizer from a K13S '12

So, yes, the transmission relationship is different. I think they are:
- K12S: 2.82
- K12R: 2.91
- K12GT: 2.82

So, I'm running the same as a K12S.

There's some backslash when releasing the throttle, and if the design of the driveshaft incorporates a better dampener, this should cure that bad habit of hers.

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

I've taken the bike out for a few kilometers the last days and its really noticeable.

The chudder in low RPM is less and the shifting of gears has improved. The unloading of the gearbox before shifting is more controlable.

Overall, in my opinion, it was well worth the money....

AK

This is a picture of a K12S driveshaft:

And this, a picture of a K13S driveshaft:

You can see how the damper is larger on the new version.

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

My driveshaft is from a k1300r and my bike is a k1200s.

There is no difference between k1300 "R" and "S" shafts.

I could install my 1200 shaft into any 1300.
Splines on the gearbox and final drive are the same.

Just make sure that the shaft looks like the second picture.
Black with the oval shaped welding spots.

Did another 200km today, twisty roads with lots of up/down shifting.....such a pleasure now.
You will love it....

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

Lucky you that can get it that fast.

I have to wait until it gets to Miami.
One week to make it to Managua.
Pay $3.5 a pound, and then whatever taxes the government feels like charging...

Mine arrives to Miami on Tuesday 4/5. It'll have it at the end of April.
Then, since I'm doing this, I might just go full crazy and paint the whole bike black, or "asphalt grau" (the K13R gun gray color).

Love this thing.

Received the K1300 Drive shaft. 100% in excellent condition. The front splines looked a little WORN in the picture BUT,, it was just nasty grease.

Am I correct in assuming this is a drop in modification? Meaning I simply remove one shaft, and insert the other, and put it all back together and then go ride?

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

Thx for the thread Patrique.I did mine today on my 07 S.Some where else I read about removing the bolt from the swing arm to the shock to lift the swing arm and pull the old drive line out.I used the optomoly paste on my splines,(I love that stuff) and every thing went smooth.I changed my fd oil and greased the roller bearings on the fd case where it bolts to the swing arm.

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

I purchased mine and installed it. It was a PAIN to get the front shaft to enter the transmission drive socket. I used a piece of heavy 550 cord and a small length of thin wire.

I double wrapped the 550 cord around the front shaft and made the loop tight with the small piece of wire. I pulled the cord tight so the front shaft was level with the drive shaft and slipped the drive shaft into the swing arm. Took a few tries but the shaft finally slid into its home.

Once the front shaft was properly inserted, I jerked on the cord, which released the wire tie and pulled out the 550 cord. DONE!

Have not driven it yet. Away on holiday.

Bill

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

Wow....

That sounds pretty complicated getting the shaft back in.

I just use a bent coat hanger to lift it over the area where it always gets stuck.

(Ok, i have been pulling the shaft out quite often in the last year or so.... Lots of practice)

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

Some NOTES on my recent 2007 K 1200R drive shaft removal and install of the K1300 drive shaft.

So,,, you THINK its just a DRIVE SHAFT. What the hell can go WRONG with a "DRIVE SHAFT" ????? HA!

LOL! When I removed the OLD OEM 2007 stock drive shaft, I saw some rubber DUST/debris inside the housing. WTF? I had a defective rear rubber accordion boot so, I thought that the rubber came from that. It was dry rotted and cracked. Since replaced with a new one....

WELL,,,,,,,,, When I pulled out the old drive shaft, I saw that the rubber bushing/dampener that connects the inner shaft to the outer shaft was significantly worn/deteriorated!

If I get a chance I will cut the thing in half and see just how bad it really is.

I have/had a LOT of drivetrain slop and noise. Some contributed to bad clutch basket springs but, this driveshaft HAS TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT!

Pictures to follow as soon as I can take and post them.

I have NOT had a chance to finish up the other mods that I'm doing so no test ride just yet.

Bill

I can't yank mine out after 1" of movement. Is this the trick? edit: hasn't helped

This is what I've done..

  • Bike on center stand
  • Wheel off.
  • Remove paralever in back.
  • Lower final drive enough so the shaft slips off the final drive.
  • Pull the rubber boot up front back so you can see.
  • Insert a screwdriver to hold up the front spline while going back in.
I'm stuck there despite then removing the lower shock bolt. The shaft only moves out 1".

Try putting the trans in "N" and rotating the drive shaft as you extract it.

@ Bill Curlee. Thanks Bill. I'll try that next time I have a go. I needed to put it all back together in prep for a weekender. Hopefully it'll work. It's usually a simple solution to such things. Cheers.

Re: K1300 Driveshaft installed in K1200s

Thanks Gatekeeper.
All looks good and pretty much as mine did, except it still doesn't come out. I've put it back together so to go on a ride this weekend. I'll tackle it another day.
I did at least reapply some moly (honda) as the splines were dry.

I have a 2008 K1200S, 02/08. Does this then mean that I already have the updated driveshaft that is shared with the K1300S? Thanks!

If the shaft is black then its the new one.

If the shaft is grey its the old one....
