final drive pinion gear "play"

On my R 1150 RT '04 upon taking the final drive off I discovered play in the pinion gear. When spun it functions normal with no play. But when pulled/pushed in and out there is slight play. Also the driveshaft to the tranny has the same movement. Is this normal? It's important to note that there is no leakage of oil and no spline wear on either part.

Re: final drive pinion gear "play"

There's a really informative YooToob vodiodi on the subject of checking and rebuilding the FD. It's from James at SuperBikeSurgery in Gloucestershire, UK. Rather long and boring because James likes talking to his camera, but he's a thoroughgoing and very capable mechanical engineer with lots of experience of working on these bikes.

Currently in the heatwave, enjoying my newly-imported from the UK, 2004 Tiger-Stripe Rockster with the roadster higher handlebar and the GS lowered footrests. I only wish that top gear was a real 6th and not this tiny, hardly-noticeable overdrive.
