ABS Started Working??

2005 K1200S. April 2015, ABS failure lights begin to flash. Could turn off bike and upon restarting ABS failure lights would go away. Later that summer, ABS failure lights are on for good, or are they?

Had the bike diagnosed at the dealer almost a year ago. Said the code was ABS failure, need new module. Didn't have $1200 -2200 dollars, so kept riding it as I had great front brakes (don't judge me).

Got on the bike a few days ago after a 12 day break, and upon starting noticed that it looked like the ABS wanted to work, with yellow flashing light that went out just like it's supposed to. Had no failure lights for about 3 miles, it was so nice! Even tested just the back brake pedal, and sure enough, had great back brake stopping power. But failure lights came back on, and back brake went away.

Later in the ride, I stopped on a hill to open my jacket, and upon restarting it seemed as the ABS wanted to work again, yellow flashing light etc.. then went to the failure lights before leaving. I've noticed that if I park the bike on an incline that the ABS kinda wants to work.

I'm just wondering if there's something I'm missing. Could there be a simple, inexpensive fix for this? Seems like it wants to work.

Thanks guys!

Curt

Re: ABS Started Working??

Check the ABS rings for damage and the clearance of the sensors. Make sure the sensors are within the clearance spec

Looks like Module Masters in Idaho finally have their act together with parts and say, September for doing these at about $750.

That's a doable price. I really liked them on my K-RS. My GSA on the other hand...the best thing that happened to that pig was the Servoectomy!

That's what I did for my '07 K12S... $250 flat rate, upgraded components, 5 year warranty. Hard to beat & quick turnaround. That was 4 years ago or so & still performing well.

Note that there is no rear ABS ring. Instead, there is a rear wheel rotation sensor mounted to the back face of the rear drive, and whose output is shared by the ABS system and the speedometer. Often small bits of steel get stuck to it that affect its performance. Try removing it and cleaning it.

Re: ABS Started Working??

Just my two cents.
My ABS was intermittent and I tried to get it fixed my module masters and couple of others in UK and Germany.
No one could do it, so I pulled it apart myself. I am an electronics engineer and design control systems like the ABS.
Long story short - it was bad connections inside the case. I cleaned the contacts and now its fine.
YMMV
