Right now we are trapped to the Puget Sound region due to snow in all directions in the mountains. The poor K bike has to share duty with other bikes that come along, so it does not get all the attention but it is my favorite motorcycle by a long shot. I find that interesting, rust inside the motor. Bad working conditions.

My sympathies with the weather. We ride year round here in Texas, but the Summers can be brutal. We don't have the great roads you do either.

Re: K1300s clutch problems

The fourth photo has a pattern that appears to match that of the friction pads resting on the disc. I would say that your opinion that the cycle sat idle too long is correct. It would take a long time to pit the discs that way. Must have been idle for an extended period of time. I suspect that when you ride it regularly, you will never see this problem again. Enjoy. Now I need to add cycling the clutch several times to my periodic run ups, clean my firearms and oil my knives. You have implanted rust phobia in my brain.

Then, I get rpm jump without increase in speed. Hasn't been to the dealer yet, but I have talked with them and others. Everyone seems to think it's a clutch issue. The dealer says they'll remove and inspect, 2-3 hours labor. Replace what needs replacing, but I should expect a new Lamellar pack, (2121 7700514), less likely, a new Couplng Cap or basket, (21 21 7700501). They won't know until they remove the clutch.

John is in the UK. He rebuilds and replaces parts of the clutch you send him. He replaces the clutch plates with Japanese parts. For an extra $500 he "rebuilds" the basket. I can understand replacing the springs, but I've heard a typical problem is rounded corners. Not sure how that can be rebuilt. What he does sounds good, but the UK is a long way away. No way to inspect what is actually done, and it's not cheap.

John sounds good, but has anyone with a K1300S actually used his service? How long ago? How hard do you ride? I like to believe what people tell me, but there are so many scammers around these days...

BTW, I can ride the bike fine at normal speeds, no slippage. It's only when you really crank it. Normal riding the slipping wouldn't even show up.

I have a K1300S, John rebuilt my clutch in 2017. Over 5,000 miles later it's still going strong. He knows what he's doing. If you take the time to read back through this thread there are positive recommendations from other satisfied riders. You are not taking a risk with John...

Re: K1300s clutch problems

I had my gearbox reworked by Mark Doucette in Florida.
Haven’t done anything with the clutch basket, but I have a long thread on my gearbox slipping out of gear in second and fifth.
He did the dovetail thing on the dogs and slots (undercut).
I only supplied the shifting forks.

The gearbox has been going flawless now for over 4 years.
Mark will not answer email. Old school guy.
But will pick up the phone to talk.

Hope that helps.

Yes, I had John rebuild mine. I was a little jittery in the beginning, but after talking with him I felt confident. I've put around 2000 miles so far without issue. Still haven't really stressed the clutch, but it seems strong. I'll update after more mileage.

Re: K1300s clutch problems

I have SUFFERED with a fried clutch for a LONG time.. January I got the opportunity to get a business trip to Scotland. HOT DAMN.. I ripped the clutch out of the bike and boxed it up real secure, threw it in my luggage and hand carried it to Faslane Scotland. From there I put it in the UK mail and sent it to JOHN "FOURHUNDRED4" I supplied him the clutch, basket and a new Barnett Clutch.

John worked his magic on it and mailed it to me back in the states.
MAN,,, When I opened the box, a WORK OF ART emerged!! It looked brand new!!

The weather has been really bad here lately in the Northeast and I installed my professionally re-worked clutch yesterday.. Went together like a champ. First crank and I was in heaven! ZERO CLUTCH NOISE!! I was really impressed and very happy!

I have to change the oil and install a couple of other things that I have been procrastinating on. TEST DRIVE to come later in the week!

John,, If you are reading this "THANK YOU very much and job well done!!!! ,, I will let you know how it drives soon.

I was surfing the net and came across this you tube vid. It is in (I THINK) Spanish but it details what goes wrong with our clutch baskets and what goes into repairing them:
