Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

My watch needs to go in for it's 5 year service. Every time I've done this in the past....it's taken months to get it back. Some time ago I bought a cheap Timex to tide me over but now it's dead...battery I suppose. I also got a gift watch from the NRA years ago. I found it and it's dead, too.

So now this has me thinking about just trying to go without a watch for a while. Shouldn't be a problem, me being so old. And can't look at my phone because I don't carry that either.

I know that I've known people who don't wear a watch but I can't remember who they are to ask them how it works. So how about you guys? Who among you doesn't wear a watch? Did it drive you nuts at first?

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I haven't worn one in 15 or so years... I admit I pull out my flip phone perhaps 4-5 times a day to check.. otherwise.. when I'm driving or riding I have a clock right in front of me... same with the TV.. same with the computer... there's a clock in our bedroom and office...

Never missed wearing one.. Not for a second.. That being said.. If I were working for somebody else .. I'd probably wear a watch so I knew when I could take breaks, lunch, leave, etc..

Question.. I won't carry a smart phone due to their size.. That's why I still carry a tiny flip phone.. You say you don't carry a phone... same reason? Or just don't like being tracked and monitored by Big Brother?

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Bill; I wear a nice dive watch & have for approx 12 years. Can't imagine not wearing one.
Actually lost the Panerai off of Edgartown last month in 45 feet of water & 30 knots (long story). Called the Edgartown harbor master asking if they knew of any kick ass divers. They did & the next day, "Heidi' found it with the coordinates of approximate triangulation I provided her.

In the 24 window with no watch, I felt very naked, which is nothing new, but even more so w/o the watch
Only 'pussies' don't wear watches

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Pirate has it right. We've got clocks everywhere. There's the little time display on the lower right corner of my Win10 'puter, and the clock on the instrument panel of my T-6 Texan when I'm flying in P3D. There's the digital time display on the instrument panel of my S1000XR. What else do I need?

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I have a watch for each day of the week and for special occasions ..I'd rather not wear underpants then go watchless.

My last purchase was the Samsung Gear 3 to BT it to my phone....cool toy!

If you need to know the time, just ask most folks on the street....

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I've always worn a watch and still do. I have several inexpensive watches that I use, and a Rolex that my Dad gave me when I was 13 (just a couple of years ago ), its due to be serviced so I'll bring it in and bite the bullet as it has sentimental value and worth keeping up with. Yes, my phone, computers, cars, motorcycle all have clocks, even one on my desk in the office, and the one in the photo that my daughter gave me that's on my office bookshelf, etc., but I like wearing a watch.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I subscribe to the Timewatch School of Jerry. I haven't worn a watch in over 15 years and rely on my phone or the computer (which I spend an inordinate amount of time in front of) or simply ask someone passing by (fortunately the Timewatch School of Jerry has a limited number of alumni, so there's always an available personal time teller).

I'm at a point where I probably couldn't stand having something hanging off of my wrist and it would simply annoy the shit out of me.

Although I suppose it's going to depend on where you live. A city like London with large numbers of people in the street means it's easy to get information. If you live in some rural place where you have to drive everywhere, well that might make asking someone a bit more complicated.

I wear a watch when I need or want to know the time. When I'm free from timekeeping, I don't wear a watch and it doesn't bother me at all. One day I'll be free with my time and will go naked.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I wore a watch when I was kid - back in the day with the 2-3 inch leather bands I thought they looked cool.

I don't know exactly when I stopped wearing a watch but I know since I've been married I've not worn one - got married in 1981.

I also stopped using a wallet going on about 25 years now. Always bothered me and I ended up stuffing stuff in it making it even bigger.

Don't miss either.

I have never been late for anything and I've always had money in my pocket.

Used to all the time, haven't for quite awhile now. Do have one, Casio, that I will wear if going hiking/ into the wilderness, as it has a compass, altimiter, barometer, solar charge ability, more of a tool than a time piece.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

My son gave me a Apple Watch last year. Very cool and all,but...
I’m afraid I’ll ruin it! I’ve never had much luck keeping and not damaging watches.
Again, always have my phone (The Satanic Tether!!) or some other clock near by.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

When I give back the 24/7 corporate phone I'll likely have a battery put back in my watch and wear it again. Until then I'll just keep looking at emails a few dozen times a day. Pays for the toys!

The one time I forgot to wear my Rolex Submariner, I asked a pretty young woman if she had the time.

I was arrested for soliciting - turns out she was an undercover cop.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Of course, being a NY City boy from birth, I learned to wear a watch early on. Sure, try asking someone on the street in NYC for the time.

"Excuse me sir, do you have the time? Or should I just go and fuck myself?"

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I haven't worn a watch in over 40yrs.
Ask me for the time on the street?Odds are that I'll know within 15 minutes?
Lady holding a cel phone asked me for the time recently,I knew what time it was (within 15 minutes) but took time to pull out my phone AND turn it on to give her the exact time.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Same as Jerry and the other guys who don't wear, I do prefer underwear to a watch.

Haven't worn a timepiece in forever. I can estimate the time based on several things and can come fairly close to the real time when checked.

Routine has a lot to do with it. The work shift experience lasts forever because the clock is integral to my job. At home clocks only tell me it's almost time to get back to work.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I've probably gone the past 10 years without a watch. As one of those saddled with a corporate phone I figured that I no longer had a use. Recently I bought another digital watch however as I'm tired of taking my phone hiking/biking/swimming etc when it's not really needed but I'd still like the time.

I haven't worn a watch in 20 years. I found any item on my wrist would likely get damaged in short order because I'm always working on something. Stopped wearing my wedding band because of almost daily proximity of a battery, brake fluid, grease. It wasn't worth it to damage a fine piece of jewelry like that.

I've worn a watch since my early teens. I feel naked without it on and find it much easier to consult for time at work as opposed to looking at the itty bitty display on the computer screen. Otherwise, as Pirate points out, there are plenty of clocks most everywhere. Still?

I haven't worn a watch since the age of cell phones. But in this digital world, it's not just a watch anymore, I may start again. At least during the work day.

Far too much dependance on time.
There are now clocks everywhere, most of them pretty accurate, and watches are no longer part of my attire for the last twenty years.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

For me, I feel naked without a watch. I have ALWAYS worn a watch and yes, I know there are clocks and time displays everywhere but it only takes me a millisecond to glance down and check the time. And if I'm in a meeting, and you don't want to be 'that guy' that has his phone go off in the middle of the meeting (minus the possible consequences) you'll turn your phone completely off to make SURE your phone doesn't go off! And watches are like motorcycles....there's one for everybody out there!

Watches are mostly superfluous accouterments these days. However, I for one like them and wear them, though not every day. They are like jewelry now and there are many that look really cool. They can be collectible like anything else.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Many years ago I stopped to help one of my ex coworkers (I'm now retired). The '10 minute job' turned into a troubleshooting exercise with no end in site. As I had other things planned for the day I kept looking at my watch to check the time. During one of my time checks my coworker said -' hey looks like a nice watch - can I see it?'. I took off my watch and gave it to him only to have him throw into a pile of rags at the far end of the compressor building. His advice ' You are here now until we are done - be here not thinking about what's next. When we are done then worry about what's next'. Pretty sound advice. Haven't worn a watch since.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I have a couple of nice watches but got tired of paying for expensive service on them so as the battery died, I just stopped wearing them. That was about 10 years ago and I haven't worn a watch sense. Even on a dive, I have a dive computer with my bottom time on the display and if I want to know the time I pull out my Apple appendage and it tells me.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I used to wear a watch. They were a pain. I have a round wrist so the watch was always in the wrong position. Plus in the old days of wind up watches I could wear one for a few weeks as it would loose time and some would run backwards. The stainless backs would rot off. If I left the watch off for a week or two it begin to work again. Weird. Body chemistry, or electric force field anti watch thing, or cheap watches? I work outside and wrist watches have a hard life with me. Either broken or some got shorted out working near electric stuff. Or hung up on some dam thing. For last 15-20 years have not wore one. Cell phone works fine, and their seems to be clocks everywhere. I get a lot of calls a day so I usually know with in 15 minutes what time it is. A friend of mine used to carry a pocket watch, on his belt, stuffed in his fly. Loved to be asked the time.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Work at a ferry for 30+ years. Yes I wear one. Want to know what time the next one leaves? Don't like taking a phone every where I go and the watch can get wet.

Don't always wear one, but at times, I do like wearing a well built mechanical watch. Equal parts jewelry and timepiece. I do admire the craftsmanship.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Quit wearing a watch ten years ago when I retired. I have a couple of dress watches however that I rarely wear. Don’t feel the need and don’t miss one. “Not into time man.”

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I echoed those who had not worn a watch for years and saw no "use case" for one.

Allow me to cross-post a post I made to a pilot's forum a couple months back:

As background, I've been an Apple user since 1985 and my first Mac. Along the way bought and used iPods, iPhones, iPads and AppleTV. Overall a happy user.

When Apple first announced the Apple Watch, I thought it was pretty cool - and something I had absolutely NO use for. I had not worn a watch at all for at least a decade, and as long as I have my iPhone with me - which I virtually always do - I can always check that for the time.

But 4 or 5 months ago Karen got a hankering for an Apple Watch, and I got her a 38mm Series 3 with cellular. She's less a gadget nerd than I am, but immediately started telling me how cool it was and showing me all the things it could do. And Leo Laporte on the TWIT shows I watch was saying how with the Series 3 the Apple Watch had finally become a useful device.

You may remember I switched credit cards a while back and started accruing Capital One Rewards points. Best Buy has the aluminum 42mm Apple Watch with GPS (no cellular) for $309, and I had just in excess of that in points. Long story short, I cashed them in for Best Buy gift cards and last Friday picked up the above described watch in silver:

I passed on cellular since as I said above I virtually always have my phone with me. I especially like having the phone's camera available at all times, and I didn't really need yet another monthly cellular subscription.

So far, I'm quite impressed. As a watch, its OK. Not exactly a fashion statement. But it shines as a handy extension to my iPhone. If my phone is elsewhere in the house and I get a call, I can answer from the watch. I can also set and stop alarms, control podcast playback and volume, read messages and emails, that sort of thing. It can also control my GoPro or serve as a remote for the iPhone camera. I have yet to try out ApplePay on it, which is showing up at more and more retailers. Out and about the ability to do such things right from my wrist without having to dig out my phone is quite handy, more so than I would have thought.

It even has a flashlight function. Since we were camping out over the weekend, it came in handy a handful of times when I needed to insert a key in a lock after dark, that sort of thing.

I have yet to dig into the fitness tracking and goals, but I suspect when I get back into cycling it will be useful. I like the real-time continuous heart rate monitoring. And I went ahead and signed up for Apple's Heart Study, which will provide lots of data for them to study and has proven to be an early warning system for cardiac irregularities.

The battery lasts far longer than I imagined. Using it all day, it still shows about 80% at the end of the day. At that rate in a pinch it could easily go 3 or 4 days between charges. As it is, I charge it at night and stick it on the charger when I jump in the shower or take a nap and it jumps back to 100% very quickly. Of course, one could expect the cellular model to discharge more rapidly if cellular is used with any regularity.

Anyway, only about 5 days in, but so far I'm quite pleased with my purchase. And Watch OS5 is promising a handful of useful new features. I think I'm hooked.

A few months later, and I'm still impressed. It's totally NOT a necessary item, especially considering its $300+ price point. But its an incredibly handy iPhone extension and fitness tracker. Works seamlessly with ApplePay, which more and more retailers now offer.

In short, I like it!

Seems that the modern day "smart watch" has reset the bar a bit.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I have always worn one.
When Garmin released the D2Bravo in Ti, got one and have since worn it almost exclusively.
Fitness tracking tied into my fitness pal on the phone, helps keep my food intake down, has a host of functions and also the entire aviation airport database in it for Direct To the nearest airport in an emergency while up there. It also automatically logs my flight times.
Goes longer than 5 days on a charge.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I used to wear an Omeag Seamaster Chrono from 2013. I loved that watch but i sold it and i wish i didn't. I don't wear one any more. Not if i am gonna put the helmet on and ride. I wear one on occasion. It's just a Seiko Kinetic watch with an Austalia steel dive band. It's cheap and water resistant but i am not serious about watches any more. They hurt my hand when i ride. Too much constriction on my wrist.

If i do get into watches, i'll spend a grand on a DWC 313 or a a Doxa Sub Divingstar

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I did have a huge watch collection. I really liked the automatics. About 5 years ago, I finally realized all I needed was a phone. I sold all but one Saiko drives watch. I'm old school, I admit that freely, but I've been forcing myself to use my phone for more and more. I invested in a super quality case from RokForm to protect my one stop shop for information and no regrets!!

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I have warn a watch since about 14 yrs old. I have gone off without one but feel something missing. I have the smart phone for back up time . Scanning around while mobile there are plenty of time pieces if needed. But I still wear one today as it is easier to tilt my left wrist for the time instead of digging out the phone.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

I like wearing a watch. I've had a chronograph since my 20's.

I time a lot of things: time to cover a distance on my mountain bike, cooking steaks on the BBQ, etc.

The one I wear now is an Eco-drive, never needs a battery change or being wound up. Just some light every now and then.

Re: Who doesn't wear a wristwatch?

Been at least 25 years since I wore a watch.
The only jewelry I wear is a wedding ring, that's only because I'm forced to
