Our dog's last day

Today's the day...

Cookie's going to doggie heaven this afternoon.

Going on 16 years, our black cocker spaniel has been plagued by arthritis for the last few years. Incontinence adds a different twist to the story... You never know when a fart is just that...

You know the saying, a dog doesn't poo in his own bed? That hasn't applied to him anymore for quite a while now.

But he was still happy to be around us and was always wagging his tail ready to lie on Lucie's lap.

Last Saturday was the breaker. He lied spread eagled on the ceramic tile floor, his eyes bulging with bewildermentl. Once helped back up, you could feel his embarrassment. Without carpeting, which we don't have due to the family's history of asthma, he had often much difficulty getting up. He didn't want to walk much preferring a quick wizz on the grass by the door.

He's been a great and loyal friend for a long time now.

He will be missed...

Re: Our dog's last day

I'm very sorry for your loss. I dread the day that we will be doing the same thing.

I always enjoyed this little story...

A DOG'S PURPOSE (FROM A 6-YEAR OLD)
Pet library
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolf hound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, 'I know why.'
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, 'People are born so that they can learn how to live a good Life - - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?' The Six-year-old continued, 'Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long.'

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy..
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Thrive on attention and let people touch you.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Be loyal.
Never pretend to be something you're not.
If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Sorry to hear Louis. Knowing Cookie, I know he’s been a great friend for the family.
And he may meet with Téo, who’s already in dog’s heaven, chasing cats

My thoughts are with you and your family and, of course, Cookie. I know only too well how it must feel. They're not just a dog. They're an integral part of your family.

What a delightful story!

Last weekend at the cottage in his mistress's loving arms...

Alone with him today, sensing the time is near, he keeps coming up to me for a pat on the head...

Time to go wash the car (black), can't head over there in a less than impeccable ride...

Louis, I am sorry for your loss and can relate to your feelings. I went through the process a month ago for my 11 year old Sadie. She had severe hip Dysplasia and had been medicated for the past two years.

It is never an easy decision to make . Time heals and a new pup when the time is right.

I still think the best cure for the pain is a new dog. I’m sure Cookie would approve!

My daughter Rachel is the officer in the car. She said that the dog bore a certain resemblance to Martin from what she could remember. Rachel had a blue heeler called Nitro which she lost at 15 (the dog that is) so we are with you in your grief.

Re: Our dog's last day

Sound like many of us have had to walk this path before. It surely doesn't make it any easier, but know you are not alone. Nitro, our Lab-Chow mix was such a part of our family and it was awful to let her go. She had so much pain it was the only thing to do. Still choke up after 10 years. Her likeness, drawn by my youngest, hangs at my entry from the garage and greets me each time I come home. May you find a peace and place for your fond memories.

Re: Our dog's last day

Thanks for all your messages.

Very appreciated.

All weekend, got up in the middle of the night to go for a wizz and I was being careful not to step on the dog, he always slept on my side of the bed, then remembered...

Sorry to hear this. Very hard to read this thread. Lost one of my girls last year and still struggle to talk about it. Dogs are such good friends.

Re: Our dog's last day

Damn, Louis, I just saw your post, a month later.

You know that I'm right there with you. You hate for them to go, but they're not enjoying themselves any more. I'm sure you did the right thing.

I had Ajax put down on July 12. I have to mourn him a proper amount of time, so I'm not feeling compelled to go out and get another dog. There will be a dog ready for me when I'm ready for him.

Feeling for you, bud.
