Old versus New

I've owned 6 BMW's, all bought new, starting with the 1976 R90s. I went through three R models before getting a 1985 K100RS in February 1985. In September 1985 I went on a Von Thielman tour of Europe and bought a second 85 K100RS, in Lava Red.

I kept the red K100RS for 30 years and replaced it with a 2015 K1300s. Here they are side-by-side.

Re: Random Pic of the Day (2)

Craig, the K100RS is noticeably narrower than the K1300S. No surprise, I guess, but it interesting to observe them side by side.

Thanks for the photo.

The wind protection is about the same, as is the riding position. The K1300s is wider inside the fairing, so it pushes your legs out a bit and ends up with about the same wind on you below the waist.

The K100RS has ergonomic footrests - they are angled out the way your feet fit naturally. Footpegs are lower too (and I've dragged them). The handlebars on the K1300s are much wider than the ones on the K100RS. It's a huge difference, and it helps turning. The wind on the K100RS is a bit less turbulent at speed, and it isn't upset by the tank bag the way it is on the K1300s. The mirrors on the K1300s are a lot more usable.

These comments are interesting and a bit unexpected. The RS fairing has always struck me as angular and not flowing. I would expect the wind to be turbulent and not as well directed off the rider as on the K1300S. But, road tests of the period seemed to give the fairing high marks . . . and I guess it has stood the test of time. The BMW engineers spent time with wind tunnel tests, according to articles from the day.

The other interesting thing is that the RS looks handsome to me now. When it was introduced, I thought it was fairly ugly. What that shows is open to question.

The fairing really works well, though you have the usual turbulent edge to try to keep helmet above, or below at speed.

At 95mph, the K100RS always made me think 'train'. Stable as a freight train, very laminar flow of wind around you that you could tuck inside.

Meckolas:

First of all welcome to the site - you should post in the Intro Yourself to I-BMW forum.

And the pic above absolutely awesome - I may be somewhat biased.

Winter here now - a good 2 months before I get back on the track.

Rattlesnake Gate

I went out for a little drive 3 days ago, and just on the other side of my community's gate, I saw a rattlesnake sunning himself in the road. I parked, got a picture and waited for him to crawl off the road to safety.
