Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

Have the opportunity to pick up a used 2016 XR vs a new one.
Of course the used is a bargain and will have $$$ for farkles.
I have NEVER bought a used bike and am having a hard time making the decision to get the used one. What if the previous owner ....???
Plan is to trade my K12S in.
For now, the bike is my garage, given as a loaner and am so happy riding it.

Re: Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

Mani, low mileage, I think these bikes are very hard to abuse, unless you don’t change the oil. I wouldn’t have an issue buying used, particularly if there is still some OEM warranty left, as you could always add an extended warranty with OEM coverage.

My K13S was bought at 18 months old with 400 miles on it, and was the best bargain ever, some 45% off list, no problems at all, sans 3 FD seals.

Considering the enormous depreciation on BMW motorcycles a low-miles used model is the only way to go, unless you happen to enjoy the feeling of throwing several grand into a fire.

Re: Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

How many miles on the used XR? Has the dealership been using the bike as a loaner or did they just allow you to take the bike home as a sales tactic? Are maintenance records availble to show what services have been completed? I would check current BMW incentives on leftover 2017 or new 2018 XR's before buying a used bike. I was in the market for a used GS but with current BMW incentives it made more sense for me to buy new. Used 2016 GS were running around 17k+/- a few hundred bucks and I paid 19300 for a loaded 2018. Check other BMW dealerships for used XR's, you may find a XR cheaper and with low miles. I think Hermys BMW has a 2016 XR with just over 3k miles for less than 15 grand. If you buy used doesnt hurt to checkout cycle trader and possibly buy from a private owner. Nothing really wrong with buying used as long as you can confirm maintenance and if the bike has ever been down.

Re: Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

Buying used always has some risk involved. But on the other hand, the potential $ savings is potentially huge. The first owner took the big hit on the new vehicle. Just inspect the vehicle thoroughly and if it makes you feel better, have it inspected by a mechanic. Then enjoy!

Re: Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

If the bike is being sold by a BMW dealer and has FSH I would have next to no concerns provided I rode the bike and was happy with how it felt. I don't know about the US but here in the UK BMW sets very high standards for what are called "Approved Used BMW" bikes, and the warranty is good.

Yes. Squids generally don't buy new BMWs to abuse, the prior owner is much more likely to have been every bit as concerned about proper use and maintenance of the bike as you would have been. If the bike is relatively low miles there is hardly enough time to have skipped much maintenance anyway. That's not to say that it's impossible that a clean, low-miles bike might have a problem, but it's probably pretty unlikely.

did the dealer, or will the dealer give you any info about the prior owner and how it was used and maintained? If your dealer also serviced this bike they should have the records to share with you.

If you can get some additional background, I think you'd be good to go if the info satisfies you.

Re: Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

Thanks Guys, it did not work out. For the $$$ he wanted and trade... I'd be better off buying a new one. None available at this time, but will wait.
Funny thing is I picked up my K12 and felt so good. So smooth and solid feeling. And goes just as fast.
Gives me time to sell it privately in the meantime.

Great advise...unless you don't want to deal with selling it. But...You'll always come out far better just negotiating for the bike instead of trying to deal with both ends.

Besides...XR's and others are always for sale. Unfortunately, since BMW dumped the KS the value of your bike is pretty pitiful. Shame...

Shout out what you end up doing...

Re: Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

I would keep a K12S or K13S before I traded either for a XR. Last summer I test rode a XR twice and really tried to like it but it's just to tall for me and the styling never appealed to me. Getting a good price on your trade-in is going to be tough so you're better off selling it privately. If you really like the XR there are plenty around if you're willing to travel and shop around.

That's kind of how I view my K12S Manny. There isn't really anything that I can think of that I would want to replace it with and it performs as wells as the day I got it! Just a really good ride!

I'm not sure about you guys picking on Bill. I've watched him do enough crazy shit on a dirt bike that I believe he could start the Husky or x challenge laying on their side and takeoff from that position. The dude can ride.

Re: Dilemma, buy a used one or a new one

Depends on what you want, color, miles year, etc. and how much you want to pay.
I just bought a 2018 1200 RT in black. I was looking for a 2017 and couldn't find one, so i bought new.
What the hell, i am 65 retired, got the money, my last bike, and not a whole lot more than a used one, which i couldnt find.
I am happy and in a few months, a few hundred dollars will not mean much because i am happy.

Back on topic, Mani, I would go slightly used. It's surprising how many farkled deals are out there if you're patient. But I'm not a doctor or lawyer. If I had the money, I would go new, set it up as my one and only, and sell it and start over. Like the farkled deals I'm talking about. Does that make sense?

I've still been trying to find the science behind a bike doubling in weight when over 10,000 feet. We were just laughing about the purported incident last week.

Why were you wearing motorcycle gear to go for a hike?

An even better question would be, "why were you wearing a full face helmet, street boots and a kevlar motoport suit for a ride in the dirt?"

I had never ridden an adult (read over 100cc) dirtbike before this day. My friend, the aforementioned Bill Morgan, left me take out his DR650. He warned me that it was "heavy". Coming off a 700lb street bike I scoffed at him and told him "you call THIS bike heavy? This is the lightest bike I've ever ridden."

Well, at 11,000 feet it may as well have weighed 700 lbs. I got it lifted, sweating profusely and gasping for air. My issue then was trying to get it turned as it was facing toward the cliff edge after I'd fallen over. Once pointed up the hill I can't get traction. That's when Bill taught me an important off-road lesson when he walks down the hill and asks, "you want me to take it up?"

I take him up on his offer, the first thing that he does is ride the bike DOWN the mountain to a flatter place that he can get some drive. As he rides by me on the ascent, I realize that hiking had become part of my day, and Jeff the nice fellow that he is, was there to document the walk of shame.

I still owe Bill. Riding in the dirt that day was so much fun that I came home and bought myself a 450 dirt bike to play. Would be excellent to ride the unseen parts of Colorado again.

So maybe it took me a few years to realize that I didn't need to kick it like it was a teenage boy after my daughter.
