Question K1300GT brake fluid change Difficult? Different ?

I phoned to check on having my brakes flushed on the 2010 K1300GT and was told it could cost somewhere between and extra $75 to $240 depending on the type of brakes my motorcycle has. I looked over the method of flushing brakes on the K models a forum and found that it was lengthy but not difficult, if one follows each step thoroughly. If you know of a different type of brake system that was used on the K1300GT that would make it difficult, please tell me what I should be looking for on my bike and the steps that I would need to take. Thanks

Re: K1300GT brake fluid change Difficult? Different ?

Gary,

No it is not difficult, I did mine last year. If you want to do your own maintenance on the GT, the BMW DVD (01 59 7 721 680) is very good. I ordered mine from MAX BMW in the USA and save some $.

In the meantime, I can send you the "official" procedure as PDF for changing the brake fluid on your GT. Simply send me your email as a private message.

Gary,

I used a bleeding tool from Mityvac (MV8000). It work ok. Will be sending the info soon.

Re: K1300GT brake fluid change Difficult? Different ?

Changing fluid is not difficult on this the newer abs brakes. It took us 3 times as someone gave me bad advice on the proper method. I do mine every 2 years to keep moisture out of the system. Use dot 4 from a NEW bottle from a good brand. Dealer price on bleeding is actually around $80 for this bike and $270 on the older ABS system.

Re: K1300GT brake fluid change Difficult? Different ?

Changing brake fluid on the K1300 series as well as all K bikes made from 2007 on, is exactly the same as changing fluid on any car with and without ABS. Nothing to it! It isn't even worth bothering with vacuum bleeding.... manual bleeding is just that simple.

Re: K1300GT brake fluid change Difficult? Different ?

You can go all out and activate the ABS on a gravel road, both front and back brakes, then come back and bleed again. The GS-911 does that for you if you use it to help in the procedure. It just gets that bit in the unit trapped in the valves and innards out into the system to move around. But as Bob says, bleed it like you did your 30 year old chevy. Run a bit through to make sure. I use ATE Blue fluid every other time for the color change, it helps me see I'm all done. Just anal.
