Aftermarket gas cap locked up

A friend of mine just purchased a K and the previous owner replaced the OEM gas cap with a racing cap (no lock). We stopped for gas and had a time trying to open it. Could this be vapor lock? Maybe the cap was installed wrong? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Aftermarket gas cap locked up

Most aftermarket caps these days are vented as to avoid vapor lock... but I've seen older ones that didn't have the vent hole and did actually lock up.. When that happens they are very hard to move. That's a good guess..

also.. we sell two different brands of gas caps and both suggest you keep a clean lube on the threads to make off and on easier.. I lube mine every few months as needed. His may need to be lubed.

Lastly... if the cap is older than a few years.. the various rubber-o-rings start to lose their elasticity or warp and need to be replaced. When my top o-ring goes bad it is harder to get my cap off. I carry some spares and generally sell them at cost plus shipping..
