Report on Hot Start Issue

Even though my S is a 2013 and dealer said that harness from battery to starter was upgraded I still had an issue. So last week I took her in. The dealership is in the city (SF) so she got pretty hot with fans coming on. I parked her at the store and had the tech go outside to verify the issue. Sure enuf - no start, like a weak battery. They then took a reading for voltage from battery to starter and spec is not more than .4 volt loss. She showed .9. The kit is a a new wire wired in tandem with a heavier gauge from battery to starter. They checked my battery and it showed good. Happy to say Much better. Cold start fells more robust and when she is hot and immediately restarted, like if you stall it, no problem. They also installed the new switch gear, both sides and that is a recall.
Oh, this was all no cost- warranted

Re: Report on Hot Start Issue

I had similar results when mine was upgraded.

Re: Report on Hot Start Issue

Still, the upgrade is marginal. At least in my bike.
Last november I made a trip to my daughter. From where I live to Amsterdam it is a 3/4 hour trip.
I was low on gas but I figured I could make it if I was very gentle on the throttle and kept the revs low. It was damned cold so I had the grip heating on all the way. Because of a misunderstanding my daughter was not home so after ringing the doorbell, to no avail, and putting on the helmet and gloves again, I started the bike.
Nothing, just the dreaded CLICK.
I think the trip with the engine never exceeding 3.500 rpm, heating on, low ambient temperature and activating the brake light and blinkers A LOT! in Amsterdam, took its toll from the battery.
Push started it (in 5th gear), lost a couple of years doing that but I made it home.

Re: Report on Hot Start Issue

I have no idea why it is so hard to get to the bottom of this problem. Troubleshooting it is trivially easy.....

Step 1. Connect a voltmeter to the battery TERMINALS.

Step 2. Hit the starter

If the actual battery voltage drops to less than 10.5 or so, then the battery is not able to supply the required cranking current. Adding heavier wiring is not attacking the root problem.

If the battery voltage does not drop much below 11 volts, yet the starter still struggles, the starter wiring is not heavy enough.

When I did this test, it was clear that the OEM gel battery was not up to it. Replacing it with a (in my case) Panasonic AGM battery solved the problem.

Re: Report on Hot Start Issue

Hi Bob. The issue is the HOT start thing. Battery condition is not the issue. I am not an engineer like you, but as I have read and explained to me by BMW techs, it is a wire issue!

I did mine and the difference is obvious. With the same battery it starts the same hot or cold, before the wire it almost never started after a short stop hot. Cranks faster cold as well a sure sign of too small wire.

Re: Report on Hot Start Issue

FWIW My 09 KS never had a starting glich hot or cold before or after.. the hand switch recall. Neither did my sons' KS. Both bikes started the HOT start syndrome after replacing the OEM battery , even though the replacement battery supposedly had higher cranking amps.
Think I'll bite the bullet and go Lithium ion when this one craps out.
What has me stumped is that when i get nothing when i hit the starter hot, it turns over fine 2 seconds later.

Re: Report on Hot Start Issue

The too thin wiring sure has to do with the problem but I am convinced that the very high compression ratio of the K engine has to do with it also. It looks like the hot start problem never is there when a bike is new but appears when the engine is broken in so compression will be at its peak. Also compression is highest when an engine is hot.

Re: Report on Hot Start Issue

Just had the hot start issue fixed by the dealer on my 2012 K13s. Bike definitely cranks faster and hot start issue seems to be gone. I had the original battery in the bike before and after the repair and even though the dealer told me the battery failed their load test the bike still cranks faster. Now I installed a brand new battery and I do not notice any difference in regards to how fast the bike cranks over. With my situation it seems that the battery was not the issue.
