clunk when rolling on the throttle in 1 and 2nd

have a new situation when i'm riding. when rolling on the throttle from full off load, i feel a clunk when the power engages. i'm trying to figure out if that is slack in the transmission or if i should be worried about the final drive.

A little help as well would be i feel the clunk in the foot pegs. Any assistance would be appreciated.

All I can say is that it doesn't sound right to me. How many miles has the bike done?

Jason do you speak of your K1300S or one of your K1200 bikes? I have an '11 K1300S and have not heard/felt what you describe. Mine has 21k miles.

17000 mi. On my k1300s. It feels like when the gear and driveshaft engage. It is odd. Might be a trip to max bmw over the winter for the girl

Yes, but the gear is already engaged when you open the throttle, isn't it? So we're saying there's a clunk when you're in gear and opening the throttle from a closed throttle position??

Exactly. Same thing with and without clutch. Feels like play in something, just afraid it is something major.

Sounds like a trip to your dealership to at least check it out.

Bring it in before the snow flies so they can road test it and feel what you are experiencing.

Re: clunk when rolling on the throttle in 1 and 2nd

Hi Jasonb4
I had the same issue with my r12s and the same symptoms and it turned out to be the pinion shaft bearing on the final drive. The bearing was failing and created more play between the pinion and crown wheel. It made a thumping sound only in low down gears like 1 and 2
.Hope you come right, let us know if you find the problem.

Re: clunk when rolling on the throttle in 1 and 2nd

Dirk C I've just brought a 1200s and removed the final drive and noticed a slight amount of sideways movement in the pinion but no end float. I showed it to a bmw service manager and he said it was ok. Bike has 38000kms my question is how much movement did your pinion have and what milage? Thanks in advance Dobbo.

Re: clunk when rolling on the throttle in 1 and 2nd

Hi DOBBO my r1200s got about 40 000 km on the clock and i think i'm the 3rd owner so was not sure how the bike was ridden,The thumping sound in 1 and 2nd with the free play on the wheel made me decide to strip. The small pinion bearing at the back had a lot of internal play(side to side )180 degrees apart so i decided to strip and inspect it myself.Well i found the small bearing was totally nackerd, large amount of pitting at 180 degree apart inside the bearing.Sorry did not measure the play.Just check the clearance between the pinion and crown wheel as well, mine went from a 0.90mm to 0.80mm shim with 0.04 to 0.06mm to spare.Hope this will help.
Kind regards.

Re: clunk when rolling on the throttle in 1 and 2nd

Thanks mate Dobbo. Did you have to buy special tools to strip it down,I've seen youtube footage and it seems you have to make a jig to hold down houseing etc? It looks pretty intense.

Re: clunk when rolling on the throttle in 1 and 2nd

Hi DOBBO
Yes i made the castle nut socket to loosen the nut on the pinion I think the torque on that nut is 240Nm (i can be wrong about the torque so please don't shoot me) and the bracket to mount on the wheel flange. I drilled holes in my wooden table and used threaded rod to hold the final drive while working on it.
Safe riding.
