Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

I have a BMW advanced battery charging system that I bought about 7 years ago for my S1000rr. My current 16 K1300s is stored for the winter with the charger hooked up. The 1st time I hooked it up it brought the battery to full charge and the green light came on and stayed on for about 1 week. I unhooked the charger for 2-3 days and then reconnected it to the battery using the alligator clips to the terminals. Now the charger continuously stays at 80% trickle charge mode even though the bike has still been sitting with the ignition off.

Is this normal or could the battery be failing? Or could it be the charger is no longer working correctly?

Re: Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

My BMW charger is identical to my Battery Tender charger except for labeling. My BMW charger is a lot slower to cycle through modes but eventually gets done. If you have a Battery Plus store nearby or closer than your BMW dealer, they have the capability to test smaller batteries like ours. Most auto places I have gone to cannot test other than auto size batteries. I would start with the battery since it is easiest to test. I don't know how you could test a charger / tender.

No that is not normal! Could be any of the the two issues, battery or charger! Curious why did you disconnect it?
I would try to disconnect it again, wait a few hours and try again and see what happens.
My guess is it’s possibly the battery.
Mine being a 2016 as well, goes to blinking in a matter of minutes when I first put it on and within 1/2 hour goes to green!

Re: Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

I swapped the chargers almost 4 hours ago. The BMW charger is still red over flashing green. It will eventually turn steady green as it has in the past. The other charger (Battery Tender) on this same cycle turns steady green in a few minutes. So I feel certain that the battery is within limits. There is no practical way for us to test a charger so I would take the battery to be tested if for no other reason than to positively eliminate it as the problem. If the battery is bad, you have saved yourself some grief.

Re: Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

Why not disconnect the charger, let it sit for a day and measure battery voltage. If it is sitting around 12.5 volts the battery is probably ok. Connect a volt meter , I use a Fluke 87 with a recording feature. Crank and observe voltage. Anywhere dropping to 9 volts, battery due for replacement. My batteries seem to last 4-6 years. I ride the bikes one each day unless raining.

Re: Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

First the BMW charger is super old tech, file it. Buy a new optimate or other modern maintenance smart motorcycle charger. Not battery tender.

Second your battery is probably toast. (requires frequent charging, does not fully charge etc..) It is easy to test yourself. Take the surface charge off if you have had it on charge, turn on the head lamp or ignition for a couple of minutes. Take an accurate volt meter and measure the battery charge should be 12.7 or more. Now with the volt meter still hooked up, crank the bike over, while cranking to start the meter should not drop below 9.5 volts, if it does battery no good. Buy a volt ohm meter and add it to your tools. Read the article by euromotoelectrics in the first link. It is short and too the point. Way more than half of the electrical complaints posted are bad batteries. And...BMW bikes eat batterys for brunch. Leave your smart charger on it when not in use for more than 2 or 3 days. This can hide a bad battery so if any suspicious problems come up do the tests.

How old is the battery? Maybe it's just reached its reliable life.

If it's a 2016 bike the battery could be more than 3.5 years old. Maybe time to replace.

Check the fuse on the charger leads

Beech,
Curious whats wrong with the battery tender brand?
Thatís what i have, works great, never have had an issue with it.
Always felt they were one of the top brands.

No idea about brand ranking. My tenders have worked well since before 2011. May be old technology, but no older than the technology of the AGM battery it is charging. Nothing against better or newer, but I tend to not change something that has worked for me.

Re: Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

If you have a system you like what the heck. The point is to have something that works and is a "smart" maintenance charger that can recognize what type of battery it is hooked up to (there are different charge voltages for different types), its level of charge and if it is any good. A batter three years old is old. Constant battery maintenance masks a battery that is on its last leg. But BMW bikes need to have a charger in their lives or one will pay the piper. Also letting a battery cycle to very low then charge cuts down on its life. Plenty of good articles out there on batteries and their care. No one needs to rely solely on a forum for information.

My cycle is outdated. My battery is outdated. My battery charger is outdated. And I am old. What can I say.Thomas Edison and I were close friends.

Re: Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

So here is my update:
Sunday morning I hooked up my multi meter after letting the bike sit for 4 days without the charger. It was reading 12.6 volts. I keyed on the bike and ran my Sargent heated seat on high, handgrip heaters on high, hi-beams and 4 ways for 90 minutes without the motor running in a freezing garage and the battery never dipped under 12.1 volts. So I'm assuming the battery is in good shape.
Lat night I hooked the charger back up before going to bed. The light went to red to indicate it was charging and this morning when I got home from work at noon the battery is fully charged with the green light on the charger. So, was it a charger error?

Re: Battery charge light always blinking, charger or battery?

I would guess it was, nothing is full proof, kinda like rebooting a computer once in awhile.
Im guessing between flashing red and full on green could be such a minimal amount that the charger just didnít sense it that one time. 90 minutes with all that on and never dropping below 12 volts, thats a heck of a load! Iíd say the battery is ok.
