Akrapovic Baffle

The site has been a ghost town.

I had the annual service done on my K1300S done yesterday. I happened to be outside when the post-maintenance test ride was done. I had never heard my cycle driven by someone else and the exhaust sound was disappointing. It was like an outboard boat motor. Sooo,
today I removed the sound baffle which offered a number of observations.

First, if a Craftsman wrench is not stamped USA, expect the worse. The hex head of the screw is unblemished, but the 8mm open end wrench is damaged. I guess they left off the hardening part of construction. Second, the smallest of tack welds can be problematic. I used a Foredom grinder with a 1/8 rotary file to smooth off the tack and the screw backed out with no problem. I got lucky, the baffle slid out with a minor tug with a pair of padded pliers. Last, the cycle now sounds like it should. I will have to remember to take it easy around the areas that the police seem to always be.

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

It sounds alot better with the db killer out but I sometimes get poping when using the quick shift and occasionally coming down the gears. But my sons yamaha mt 125 is louder with his akrapovic, as pointed out by the police rider shadowing him on a recent bikesafe course.

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

I have a '15 MS, bought it with only 1400 miles in June of '16. Previous owner pulled out the DB killer. So I only know how the bike sounds without it. Sounds perfect. I took her out for a long ride after she sat for a couple of months through some of the worst weather we've ever had down here. I did a hole shot from a stop light in a very desolate area. Wound her through 3rd, the bike is a beast. Also took her up to 140 for a stretch, rock steady. Never rode a S1000RR, but if it's a lot faster than my bike, much respect.

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

K1300S tops out at 175 or so? S1000RR can get close to 200, I hear. Based on that video, the 13S showed some balls, but I think he may have gotten a slight jump. Still no slouch by any stretch.

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

I removed my db killer this weekend and did a quick 150 mile ride. I have to say that it came out quite easily. As for the sound, well, it's magical. Though I would likely put the db killer back in for longer touring jaunts. Nice to have options.

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

Now disconnect the cable coming down to the valve in the exhaust just before the muffler and safety wire the open valve to stay open... Sounds even better under 4500rpm than with that silly valve in there.

Only if you enjoy exhaust pops, though.

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

Well, I slipped off that Akrapovik slip-on can completely.

Took the K for a gallop on North Yorkshire’s finest goat tracks, tachometer rarely below 6k, ASC switched off, the smell of melting Michelins in my nostrils.

Couldn’t hear a damn thing above the sound of Steppenwolf at 11 on the volume dial on constant repeat in my Sennheiser headphones.

So how do I make my engine louder?

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

You all need to take it to the next level and get some akropovic headers with the carbon can. Now it sounds like a wild animal. Then you will notice the extra 15-20hp between 8,000 and 11,000 rpm that has the 1000cc racer boys in shock as you blast off at the lights. And the extra torque in the midrange that has you re-thinking your gear selections when carving up and down mountain and canyons. The engine breathes better during gear changes. No remapping needed, just bolt it on and ride it.

Re: Akrapovic Baffle

I put on the full Akrapovic Ti race system with carbon can. The flat spot rolling on at 55 - 65 MPH was unbearable so I had Brentune flash me a new fuel curve. It took them two tries as they did not have the bike, but the second one is right.

I also get some pops on downshifts.
