Fly and ride

So I found a 2018 that I lust and have a deal. Great deal.
Now, I have booked a flight to and plan to ride it back. ~600 miles.
Leaving Friday Am, get there, chill, meet up on Saturday early AM, finish said transaction and ride it back home. Entirely doable, the riding part.
Now, How is it done? Do you wear the riding gear on the way over in the airline? or carry it all in a duffel bag that you can secure with ROK straps. How about the helmet?
My gear will be Klim BL pro jacket and pants, Sidi adv Goretx boots and schuberth C3pro. Gloves and all else. He is throwing in the Vario topcase.
Please post how you did it.

Re: Fly and ride

When picking up the '03 BCR in NY state a few years ago, shipped my gear via UPS to the owners house. He was glad to sign for the gear knowing my trip back across many states. Packed a carry on bag that would fit in the hardcase. 800 miles back to INDY and all was good.

Wear your gear on the plane, haha. You'll be like MattB out for a hike. I've always just checked my bag of gear. Sounds like much fun in your future!

Re: Fly and ride

When I did my trip to CA in 2010, I put all my riding duds in a suitcase & checked it as luggage. Then stowed my helmet in a helmet bag as one of my carry ons. In my other carry on, I had my tank bag & miscellaneous items I might need on the journey.

Fly in & ride home will be a blast! You should document your trip for us & make a ride report out of it!

I did the ship gear to seller's home. He even picked me up at the airport and put me up in his guest room. Doesn't get any better than that! Las Vegas to Cincinnati via Pasadena. An extensive shake-down ride.

Re: Fly and ride

Depending on what you are going to use for bags on the bike you could buy a nice soft tail bag or soft panniers and use them as carry on

Re: Fly and ride

KLIM BL gear is going to be hot! Get a soft duffel bag, put your gear in it and check it. Keep your helmet and essentials out as carry-on luggage. Take ROK straps and tie the folded up duffel with the extra gear on your seat or luggage rack. Done.

Re: Fly and ride

Congrats on the new (to you) XR!

I'd go checked baggage, especially if it was a direct flight. I'd use a surplus USN sea bag for my riding gear: Aerostich Combat Lite boots, Darien pants and jacket, Shuberth C3Pro in the helmet bag, maybe folded inside the jacket.

The sea bag can be held down with a set of Rok Straps. My XR has the hard bags, and I have found that you can attach the short bungee portion of each Rok Strap on the saddle bag post before attaching the bag, then thread the long straps at the end of the little luggage rack. Works great for an Ortlieb, the empty sea bag, a case of beer, whatever.

Some farkles worth mentioning are:

BMW holder for auxiliary socket: p/n 61348551216 and Torx screw p/n 07129907413

Powerlett 12v BMW plug wired direct to battery 36" worked for me: http://www.powerlet.com/product/powe...36-harness/158

OK, you want some serious light? Go for the Clearwater Ericas and Billie Jr. brake light flasher: https://www.clearwaterlights.com/products/erica-s1000xr

I've had my XR since March 2016 and I'm still very happy with it after 28,000 miles. Oh yeah - Metzeler M7RRs are good, wet or dry.

Sorry for all this, but I've been drinking high octane coffee.

Re: Fly and ride

Got it home safely last night. 579 mile ride from FL to TN. Rain, rain all day off and on with thunder lightening and heavy downpours. But made it.
Here is a first shot just after I took it, beside the Atlantic.
Sorry, I uploaded it to my gallery but there seems to be no pics there.

What size is the photo? From experience I know that if it's over about 1.4Mb it will show as having uploaded to your album but then doesn't appear. If you downsize it to under 1Mb it should be OK.

These BMW Race colors are beautiful. Now to get rid of the frying pan below the bike, the cat and the intake restrictor to unleash it.
