Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

A recent thread made me think of this. I have always been one to chase down motorcycles if I see them ahead of me. To me, it is even more fun on a GS and in the twisties. Right or wrong, it's what I do.

Admittedly, one time on a twisty afternoon mountain ride, a guy on a full dresser got around a couple of cars on a double yellow, and as hard as tried, I didn't quite catch him before we reached the summit. He rode his big bike well although it was obvious he had dragged a lot of metal, often. We chatted and laughed and he was proud to have "kicked my ass up the hill".

Another time on a long cross country solo trip, I chased a very spirited rider down some very narrow mountain twisties with little opportunity to pass. Just before the road eased, up I fell in behind him, only to see that I had just caught up to a State Trooper moto cop.. I figured he would nail me for several offenses and I even eased around him (on the dotted line section) at 7 or 8 MPH over the speed limit. I figured by then it didn't matter since I was running way over trying to catch him. He gave me a kind of 'take it easy gesture' and never pulled me over as he faded in my rear view mirror.

So, how about you. Do you pay any attention when you see motorcycles in the distance? Do you chase down other motorcycles?

I don't think I wick it up. Usually just gain on them and make a clean pass. It annoyes me
though when they pace me afterwards, so I turn it up a notch or two to get some distance
between us.

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

When the mood strikes, I don't really care what it is, I chase it down. Bike, moped, car, whatever.

A few times I have been dusted by cages on twisty roads. I once followed an old beater truck on NC28 and realized I had no chance whatsoever to pass the kid driving. He waved at me when he pulled off on a dirt driveway! I will say that he knew every inch of that road we were on and his driving showed it.

I've been dusted by a couple of young ladies in a Mercedes in the Ocoee Gorge because I quite taking the risks that they were taking. I eventually caught up, near Cleveland, TN.

I was once dusted on the Interstate by one of these.

I stayed with the Aston Martin Vanquish S up until 130 or so and then he kept going and I had nothing left (my KRS). He eventually slowed down and I gave the wave of appreciation as he exited the highway.

Call me childish or foolish or whatever. I love it.

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

For some of us, it's simple - if it moves and is on wheels, and it is in front of us, the game is on.

I can't take the curves like I used to before my high-side, but the lust to catch and pass is still there in full force. I've had a blast playing with sportscars on the empty ranch roads around here. Just gotta be aware that beyond that rise in the road might be a herd of cattle!

Chase everything yes, but not always catch.

It all depends upon whose telling the story
You know they are GS riders however by the stories THEY tell.

Surprised to hear you say that. Kyle and I found out how fast ours would go, and it was noticeably more than a buck thirty.

I have to admit that I do or at least try to chase 'em down. Always have. Guess it speaks volumns about my level of maturity but that's OK since I'll be going on Medicare in a couple months With all the local LEO's riding Beemers now it can be surprising at times.

I have to agree with Joe and Pat. If it's out there, a speck on the highway in front of me, I'm gone. Not sure why ? Must be some primal urge to chase or run down. Fun sometimes and embarasing other times.

I like to give chase on the KRS. On the CLC I usually chase and catch the occasional tractor on the road.

My KRS wasn't much faster than that. Maybe it was my fat ass, maybe it was something with the bike. My K-S has a top end of 161 per GPS.

Joe, the humidity of FL must make your bikes slower! I had 160 on the gps, redlined in 5th gear, on my '08 K12S, when I ran out of straight road (same road Bill & Kyle just enjoyed). Get back here and we'll give you another shot at those numbers...

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

I'm with everyone here so far...why?.....cause it's fun!!

I even go so far (since my helmet is wired for autocom) as to play Top Gun when the mood strikes...and it's even better with wife on her bike or on the back....Topgun meaning that I will call out "Target sighted....target in range....target aquired...(and of course)... target eliminated" if I am successful!

I am of course not always successful and won't resort to squidom if the target see me and starts taking stupid risks...but yea....it's fun and I just chalk it up to "It's what we do" and I defo enjoy it!

I'm also 300lbs and as Cousi mentioned earlier, present a larger wind drag. Just sayin'.

I think it is PC to gradually slow to their speed so when they accelerate on a straight to near legal speeds, their ego is boosted by the noise and revs increasing on their machines while leading a non HD bike. Meanwhile we have to make it look (PC wise) like we are having a hard time keeping up, let alone get around them.

I have manners but often am not PC. I will use my turn signals out and in when passing and wave.

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

I voted "other". I wouldn't say that I "chase down" other bikes, but sometimes catch them riding my normal pace. There are times where I consciously speed up if I'm curious as to what bike it is and want to see it however.

Harley's are an ENTIRELY different matter. With Hardley's I either 1) buzz them as fast as possible or 2) if the road allows for it I will actually pass the entire herd as SLOW as possible. Using approach 2 is fun as it allows them to ingest my tag which they just love. If I'm really feeling frisky I'll pass each herd member one at a time to ensure a closeup of the tag. Typically they react like I'm a cancer and drop FAR back.

Our roads are so twisty it's more often just rounding a turn and there thy are. Sport bikes and Harleys tend to speed up and make passing difficult, so I love to park in their left mirror until they get tired of seeing us. No matter where they go, no matter what line, no matter how fast or slow, just stay so that every time they look in that left mirror they see YOU. Trust me, it drive them nuts. Soon they pull over and wave you by.

Oh, BTW, I didn't mention Gold Wings because they NEVER look in their mirrors.

And sometimes you just follow.

I wrote my post and then amended it directly to read "When the mood strikes". I am right there with you but you stated it "much more better" . Most of the time my normal pace has me catching and passing other bikes. Occasionally I will get the urge to chase something down.

I do like to rip the throttle open to pass the Hardley's! Loud pipes saves lives!!!!

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

Its not so much that its a chase when I see the Pirates of the Caribbean clan ahead on the Hd's, it trying to stay safe thats big with me. I find that a LOT of them really have poor skill level and awareness of what their abilities are.

Way too many of them seem to buy into the side by side group ride promotional videos put out by the Company, and are frankly, a real hazard. If they are in a herd, I find that its really tough to get the attention of all of them to allow a safe pass.

The lead tassel wearing parade marshal usually has no clue whats going on at the back of the pack. ...worst fear.....he pulls a hard left hoping to make it in to the tattoo shop before closing time, with me passing him!

So, no real chase for me, the challenge is getting around the rolling road block before they cause an accident I have to be part of......and usually with the GT...its not to hard to blow past them when its safe...

dog, chickens, and cops.

Not overly bored, usually just convertibles, in case some babe with a mini skirt

But with the Harley guys, pull up and ride with them a short distance. It seems to bug them that you want to ride with them and be their friend.
When they roll the loud pipes on then it's time to pass.
Kinda like "catch and release."

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

Must admit that it is oh so fun to pass other vehicles, but with other bikes, no matter what kind, I try... try to be polite enough to wave as I zip off. Those bikes don't have the power that we have at our fingertips. Not a fair contest, but fun nonetheless.

I agree that some of those riders are dangerous and one needs to cautiously steer clear of them. Thankfully, we don't usually see too many packs of 10 or more side-by-side cruiser riders in this area. When stopped, great conversations can be had by approaching those same Harley riders that one passed a while back - that's one reason it helps to be courteous when passing.

I never feel the need to pass someone "just because," but I don't sit behind rolling roadblocks either.

You may be slow, but you're still pretty quick on a motorcycle. My momma always said just 'cause you rode the short bus doesn't mean you're ugly. Just sayin'.

I'm guilty, especially if it's a Harley. I just can't stand riding behind a Harley the exhaust is deafening so they get buzzed quickly.

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

I usually ride at a quick pace, nothing crazy but anytime I see a bike I usually like to check it out, see what it is or how good the rider is. I only make it a point to get by Harley's as often as I do because I can't stand riding behind them and listening to them. A family friend has a beautiful Ultra Glide that has a nice sound, nothing obnoxious but getting behind one's with the loud exhaust's gives me a headache! Thankfully they are easy to fly right by on the GT!

Jeff,

Occasionally yes. Typically if we have not had negative interaction prior I'm just happy they are not in my way and figure I'll catch up sooner or later anyway.

I guess I'm just RESPONSIBLE!

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

I tend to stay away from other bikes and cages as much as possible, I know I am pretty good at controlling the vehicles I operate, I just do not have much faith in others on the road. I guess I developed this from operating a big rig for quite a while, hitting all the mainland states and Canada repeatedly, gave me ample opportunity to observe many crazy things people do. It ultimately has to do with control though, as I even get very distressed as a passenger.
