Do You Pass On Double Yellows

So, do you pass on double yellow lines? Don't worry, no one will see your name when you vote. I can show you a lot of places out west here, where the markings on the road don't make sense...passing lines where it is unsafe, no passing where it is. Do you trust the lines on the road or trust in your own instinct and ability? Vote and if you wish, feel free to post your opinion.

I think that is illegal and I would never do such a thing. Or not.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Absolutely freakinlutly. There are many times that it is needed and only takes a couple of seconds that a car can never do. But, with that declaration, I do not do this where it would freak out the car driver. No need to make another person say "motorcyclist" with nastyness rattling around their brain. In Washington there are plenty of bad drivers with no cojones. They will not pass another car. So when this builds up two or three cars, I always give the cars the first chance to legally pass each other. If they do not do it I show no mercy and pass them all. My favorite multi pass was years ago a string of eleven cars, windy road on the Olympic peninsula took them all in a tricky spot in an older 911. Would have been a slam dunk on the K bike, as it was I pulled back in at the crest of a hill. I have noticed that there is way too much double yellow paint out there. Much of it has no rational. I think it is just to slow traffic.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

This is the only traffic violation I've received on my RS in ten years. It was at the 2005 BRPR Rally on the Parkway. Coming around a right hander I crossed a DYL to pass a line of cars on a straight. As soon as I did, I saw a Ranger and a State cop parked up ahead on the left talking. Needless to say I got waved over. The State cop wrote me up. I didn't have to appear, just paid a fine around $100.00. I've had numerous warnings for different things, but no tickets. I've been very fortunate.

Beware the Meadows of Dan!

Cool Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I do pass quite frequently, and show thumbs up to the passed driver who gave me space.
Only thing is I am sometimes afraid to meet a L.E.O. at the end of the manoeuver...

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I'm of the opinion that the DYL is painted on the road for cars, the acceleration and small size of a motorcycle make it safe to pass where it would be unsafe in a car - so yes, I use my judgment when passing over a DYL - and no its definitely not legal here in CA.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Where I live it is very common to see a string of cars following behind a slow moving truck, tractor, whatever because of the yellow line. I'm a believer in common sense and most of the time these lines were painted assuming fairly fast moving traffic. It makes no sense to me to follow at 20 mph for half a mile when a pass can be made with no intended harm to anyone. If I can make a safe pass, I'm gone.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Some states it is legal as long as you can see in view the end of the double yellow whether it be just feet or 10ths of miles. "sorry officer I thought it was one of those states" and there are states that if the vehicle is at a certain point below the speed limit it is ok to pass. And there are those states that if there is no sign "do not pass" its legal even tho there is a double yellow...It always seems to be one of those situations that I do pass. Very confusing

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Here in NC the DOT has been removing passing lanes every time they repaint. It's so bad that now I pass without even thinking about it, as long as it's safe. (And now, as long as I can see over the next rise.)

Caveat ... on NC28 at Deal's Gap a few years ago they had off duty DOT workers in private vehicles driving around slowly and waving bikes past. If you went around you were soon pulled over by the Sheriff waiting ahead and written for a DYL violation.

Now let's discuss DYL passing in a sports car. Not around one. In one.

Oh, and there was that pass of the fire truck that one time. They got real mad.

I agree, now if we can just get most state laws to comply

I do it when I have to and also speed from time to time. In either situation I'm prepared to admit and take the consequences of my actions if I get caught.

Having just returned home from Asheville via the BRP yesterday I was noticing the same. You could see sections that had been dashed and were now solid. Suppose I'm taking my chance with the law man, but if it's clear I'm going.

Yes, I've heard the same thing, but only where reasonable. I love riding in VT, and the statewide 50 mph Speed Limit (Unless otherwise posted), is awesome as well!

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

At the first SGR in '08, I was riding with Razel and Victory toward Sonora Pass... I was leading and we were doing some DYL passing. I know that Ray is somewhat apprehensive about DYL passing, but is easily led astray... ... and Victory was right on my tail. I had never ridden with Victory previously, so at our first stop I said, "I should have asked you guys if you were OK with DYL passing..." ... Victory's response was, "Well, I am now..."

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

We don't have DYL in Europe. We have solid white lines (SWL?). They mean the same thing and I pass on them on occassion (much more so in the mountains).

Doug, you can tell MA that those lines are there NOT to designate passing/non, but rather to tell the 4 wheeled cages that they are infringing on your territory. Another being so you have your apex marker in left-handers.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Hey Jeff, I used to never pass on a double yellow...then, I worked for CDOT for 3 yrs. ... and came to realize, just what a bunch of "pinheads", are actually doing the striping, and how random, and goofy it is at times. Bottom line: "a good place to pass, is a good place to pass", regardless of erroneous pavement markings!! That said...it won't stand up in court, and Mr. LEO, ain't gonna' have no pity!

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I tend to view the whole world as a passing zone unless the individual situation warrants caution or that
blasted, virtuous patience. Like others, I believe the DYLs are marked for cars that have little power
and not for motorcycles that can flick around a car (and be up in the triple digits) in moments,
safely leaving the scene of the ... uh...uhm... of the crime (according to the award givers)...
There are many laws and rules in the world that are unjust or make little sense. I'd much rather pick and choose than to engage in blind obedience.

Well stated!

However, I always obey the laws and never pass on a double yellow nor do I ever exceed the posted limit!

Goog point Steve. Last week I came up to a corner (pic), saw my buddy with his camera, came in hot, lost my line, hit the paint and almost bit it. Of course I was on the GS, so sliding around a little on the pavement was no biggie.

Same here in VA. Passing zones seem to be an endangered species. Each repaving kills another one.

Now let's discuss DYL passing in a sports car. Not around one. In one.

Oh, and there was that pass of the fire truck that one time. They got real mad.

It's all legal as long as the wrong people are not observing, that goes with the suggested speed limit signs as well. And yes, the wrong people have caught me before.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Since I was curious, I just asked a co-worker if they do DYL passings and "no" was their answer, because "they" have all day to get to where they are going and it's too dangerous, and it's against the law, and they are never in a hurry on their bike (it's about relaxation) and the cops may see and, and, and...

We have passed them. At blazing speeds. I just know it.

Some kind of of Japanese cruiser. It's a nice bike though.
They are great people but everyone that I work with who rides have cruiser-style bikes. And open faced helmets with the visor thingy.

Always like to pass slow cars where no one else behind me can. I like that open road clear mirrors no one behind. Lines or not as long as I think I am safe. Always take a look to see if there is a reason the DYL is there.

Riding alone I will if the situation allows a safe pass. Usually when the auto pulls somewhat to the right of the lane. That way I can say they pulled over to let me by.
Leading a group, no way Hemmingway. I won't incourage other riders to follow my lead.

Its perfectly legal as long as you don't pass. I suppose the car next to you could be just passing you backwards...Its possible
