Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I pass when it is clear to me that it's safe to do. Road markings that are generally painted to make it safe for a Model T in a rain storm, and are of little interest.

That reminded me.

I did that once when I was twenty. He gave me a ticket.
Thing is, he had given me a warning for speeding the day before.

Apprehensive? Hell, yeah. First time riding with my brother-in-law and a friend of his (both on Harleys) and my thought was "Eh, so what. Just this time". First time. Had to keep up with them bad boys. 3 tickets for us, and I'm back to "Never gonna do that again.".

Along comes Charlie. And, I'm slow enough that once out of sight, I'll never catch up. So, off I go, across the DYL thinking "Sheit, Charlie!". Nothing bad happens, but sure enough, another and another comes along, and I'm either thinking or saying in my helmet the same thing. But, I'm still there with everyone else.

This year, I'm leading some of the group at SGR. Only now the DYL passes are initiated by me.

I still say the same thing ...

It's OK to pass if you keep your tires between the yellow lines, that is the "motorcycle passing zone".

Unfortunately, the ossifer will (correctly) point out that while the tires were in the "zone", the left side case, leg, and mirror were definitely outside the left-most painted line.

Well I'll be dumbfounded! I learn something new every day. All these many years I was under the impression that a double-yellow line meant that that portion of the highway was reserved for motorcycle passing only. After all, I never saw any cages pass there.

Did it today, south on 203 between the roundabout and Carnation.

Can't stand those slow movin' Priusses and Subarus. They don't have any armor or self-sealing tanks, and go after a one-second burst.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

In the republic of Ontario Canada a solid or double line can not be crossed near steep hills , near railcrossings and pedestrian crosswalks, common sense. They are supposedly placed where visibility to pass is limited. However if a safe pass can be taken all should be ok. The big issue here is being picked off exceeding the speed limit when executing the pass. An old woman recently lost a major court case after being charged with stunting while passing a transport truck. The courts say such charges are up to the descretion of the Officer. I have yet to master the art of passing without going faster than those I pass. Quess I got to work at it.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Almost did it today. I was riding the K1200S on Big Rock Road, and a car pulled out ahead of me. Not quite close enough to make me slow down, but it was a minor inconvenience, as I was going about ten over the 35 mph speed limit. Big Rock is DYL throughout its entire length. The car got up to about 45 mph, and that wasn't too bad. Then we came to a decent straight stretch, and I tought seriously about dropping down a gear and blowing past this guy. Would'a done it for sure if he wasn't already cruising at about ten over. Oh well, my turnoff is coming up in a couple miles, so I might just as well sit here, breathin' his exhaust.

About five seconds later a County Sheriff passed us going the other way.

Oh man...

I pass on the double yellow occasionally to pass Amish buggies...swing wide away from the buggy and take it easy to keep from scaring the horse! Give a friendly wave and usually get one in return.

HaHa, that hapeened to me once when driving a Lamborghini I was exhibiting back from a car show. No double line but I was moving pretty swiftly when a older CHP officer happened to be coming the other way, safely far away but his eyes lit on the bright yellow Lambo, followed by the traffic stop which I couldn't talk my way out of, ouch. At least the ticket was paid bymy employer!! Its so easy to do on my S, I wouldve been back b4 I was noticed.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Sometimes ya has to. Memorable for me was a long day, 740 miles, 12 hours in the saddle from western Michigan to western Massachusetts, off the super slab and now about 20 miles from home and getting there just before dark. Behind 3 cars that are going just 5 mph under the speed limit. Looking, sitting, thinking I am tired, long day, don't mess up, don't push. Followed them for 5 miles and there was a spot and I had to do it, didn't want to, just had to. Love the acceleration of these bikes.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

DYLs in the UK or SWLs in most of Europe are to a significant degree arbitrarily placed for a motorcycle, and ven to some degree arbitrarily placed for a powerful car.

Subject therefore to the presence of Mr Plod the best thing to do IMHO is to read the road and overtake where it's safe and hold back where it isn't.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

I pretty routinely pass Amish buggies and farm tractors on the double yellow. I will rarely pass a vehicle if is only going slightly under the limit. Some of the DYL make little sense...straight road with clear lines of sight for a mile. Others sections it is legal to pass on are blind curves.

My usual mantra is "when in doubt, pass", but I agree with you on hanging back in this situation. Car in front that is already 10 over and turn coming up in a few miles is a good time for restraint.

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Only a few times with a group. The best one was a 3 man group me and another rider made the pass (legally) and the other rider stayed behind for a minute. Then out of the blue a voice over the communicator... "Is it clear?" I answered that no cars had passed and none were on their way. About 5 seconds later a black blur of a 02 K1200 RS at 120+ passed with a nice F1 sound. That was an uphill, blind corner, 7 car double yellow pass!!

Sonora Pass doesn't have a DYL up at the very top, which is the scariest and most excellent part. YOU CAN PASS ANYWHERE!

I have been in 51 countries and driven in Russia Ukraine East and West Eu and USA
I have utmost respect for those twin yellow things
When I was young and lost my license twice, I learned my lesson
It would be(at guess 400 fine and 3 license points gone) we have nine to lose, that is 3 minor infringements
That is why, allow with those furry hopping bastard Roos I will not ride a bike here
Cept for this one which severely limits me

Well ya know, Life in the Slow Lane
But same the world over, they sit like blobs in an armchair,
I read somewhere, that HD want to patent the sound of the exhaust!!
How very American is this? I mean Vee Twins have been around from various makers since the year DOT , Take the Vincent, a Brit bike
The sound of engine is a product of bore over stroke with eng config, twin , vee twin, single, three pot etc
HD do sound sweet , long bore , whereas K,s are well over sqare in config

Re: Do You Pass On Double Yellows

Raz: I stand corrected. I posted the post you are quoting before SGR 2012. The double line all the way over the top of Sonora Pass was obscured by white, ball-bearing hail when I last saw it prior to my August 28, 2012 post, and I was too scared to see any sort of road markings.

Beech and I rode over Ebbet's and Sonora Passes during SGR 2012. The weather and the roads were perfect, and I noticed that Sonora does indeed have a DYL all the way. Most civilized.

My K-bike actually likes the curves of Monitor Pass better. Also the twisties between Hwy 26 and Wasco in Oregon.

In Sydney the Cops are pulling over riders with a GoPro cameras on their helmets, interrogating the contents and following up any riders filmed crossing yellow lines, speeding, street racing etc they don't differentiate!:
I reckon it will be challenged eventually but until it is, GoPro Riders need to be careful who they incriminate over here. I know some riders putting the word out to ask the GoPro Riders to limit their use to track days or controlled situations....
