Best K Bike Ever?

Overall, what is the best K bike ever made and why? Tell us your reasons...
Multiple choice, allowing for picking the era of motor and zeroing in on the model.
There are plusses and minuses of each...
I started this poll because I notice alot of newbies buying some of these older K's
And also because I own a '09 KS and not many of those have surpassed the mileage test yet...

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I have owned two KRS's (02 & 04) and three KS's (07, 08 & 10) - the RS was (by far) the most reliable but the KS was (by far) the most fun.

So, my wallet demands that I vote for the RS . . .

Jerry, with that ownership history, don't you wish you found this site sooner?

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

'98 and '02 KRS, '05 and now '11 KS. Just picked up the '11 and haven't had a decent ride on her yet to determine if it is superior to the '05, but the '05 was definitely an improvement over the KRS in my humble opinion.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I did not vote - I have limited experience with K bikes. I had an 04 K1200GT - the bike was an all around great bike. Where many feel it is one of the most reliable - I had nothing but trouble with mine. Three rear main seals in 17,000 miles - transmission seal once - slave cyclinder - starter.

The bike was at the dealers more than it was with me. I know that my bike was an exception - when it was running it was fantastic.

I sold it for an 07 K1200S. That bike had a few issues - antenna ring failure - brake rotors replaced under warranty - cam chain tensioner update. I absolutely loved my 07. I sold it thinking I wanted to explore more - dirt roads and all that - bought an 10 F800GS - never really took it on anything more than a few dirt roads. Used my KLR for the real dirty stuff.

Just bought an 13 K1300S - because of how much I liked the 07 - have not ridden it but one time about 20 miles and parked it for the winter.

The KS bikes are almost perfect for my style of sport touring. Ride almost exclusively solo - don't like or need to carry a lot of clothes or extra stuff. Like the somewhat aggressive riding position - love the power.

If my new KS turns out to be relatively issue free - I will then vote it as the best K bike for me. Don't have any experience with the older K bikes and have ridden the awesome K1600GT one time.

I'm thinking the best K bike ever is going to be the one that has minimal issues and miles and miles of great memories.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

For most folks, I would hope the best K bike is the one in their garage or they're currently straddling. Without having ridden a single kilometer on some of these fine bikes, it's difficult to subjectively determine which is best. Would I like to own a KGT or 1600, sure I would but I'm not a winner when it comes to playing the lottery, I'm known as a donor. Still, a fine poll, thanx for creating it.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

One little nit - for those lucky enough to have substantial riding time on both the K1600GT and the GTL, it's obvious that these are two very different bikes - much more so than it looks like on paper. The ergos and the ESAII differences alone make them different enough to not lump them together on the vote. I voted for my K1600GT but would put a K13S ahead - way ahead - of the GTL.

Point taken. I've asked a moderator to split up the K16GT&GTL and add the K1.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Of course i am bias with the K1300R being the best K Bike ever.

They are all awesome bikes,

It would be interesting if the K1300R was available in USA,
how many of you K1300S riders would buy the K1300R instead...

cheers

Jeff, you're messing with us. Yes, the K1's the hottest BMW, in a temperature sense. Hottest bike I ever had. Great bike for October to March.

But best? I don't think so.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Still wish I had the '85 K100RS, smooth and simple, but smoked if you put it on
the side stand.
Loved the looks of the '96 K1100RS, but it was hot and killed my wrists.
When I saw that the '02 K1200RS had real cruise control I bought it. Loved the
smoothness and made it to my liking. But it wouldn't take me everywhere I wanted
to go.
The R1200GS is the best all-'round bike I've ever ridden!

I'm kinda of partial to the older KRS. Drawn with a French Curve and not a straight edge. Oh....
It's paid for too!

I didn't vote because the results of the poll will obviously be skewed toward whatever bike(s) the voter has experienced. I've only owned 2 on the list and the one currently in my garage is a significant improvement over the one it replaced.

I had a '96 K1100RS S/E, it was HOT too! So hot that the side cover would fall off because
The rubber garment got so soft it wouldn't hold the pin.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

K100 series.
My K100LT 88 was the most reliable and dependable bike I have owned. Runner up is the GT07 for me. RS98 was a not so good. Considering technology available at time beeing, the 88 LT is the top and by far.
No problem with any of the following: engine, intake, injectors, fuel line, engine chip, rear seal, slave cylinder, chain tensioner, driveline, fork seals, rear end, fan, radiator, overheating, ABS, body parts or electric system.
On that last one, it took the xenon lighting of the GT 07 to roughly equal the power of the 55 watt of the 88LT. On that part, the RS98 was a total disappointment, even with PIAA bulbs.
I beat the crap out of it at 100 mph plus on frequent trips from to home to Montreal or Ottawa with no issues. I event brought it to a track day.
The only part I replaced was the master cylinder of rear brake, $300 or so.
To me, the only thing wrong on the stock model was a soft front, hard rear. But in all, a great machine. One battery lasted 12 years...

Cool Re: Best K Bike Ever?

I have only owned one BMW, It is my current ride. I purchased it in July of 2012. I put approx 15000 miles on it before the first snow fall. I have ridden and owned many bikes in my 42 years in the saddle. Raced them toured them rode them from sea to shining sea. Each one of them was better than I will ever be. Call it Gods Grace but I have not had a bad one to date.

I currently ride a bike that runs so well handles so good and truly brings happiness to my life.

I have read others have had issues with my model. I have had zero problems with mine.

2005 K1200S. It goes good and It received my vote.

I'm glad you're enjoying the experience of the K12S. It is definately a great ride and regardless of those other opinions, the only one that really counts is yours.

Just keep smiling and chalking up the miles.

What is the difference between the 98-2004 brick and the K12RS/GT?

Both are listed.

I'll be waiting to see the final explanation.

Actually no, because with that rationale the slant 4s would be grouped as well, making it a tie.

It's a poll. Normally you would pay in advance for a non biased company to prove your point.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

The poll was multiple choice, allowing you to vote for the engine type and/or the model. I suppose someone could vote for a KS as the best bike, and the brick as the best engine...non scientific, intended for cheap thrills only.

One thing I was hoping to elicit, were the written opinions of those that have owned many of these different bikes...

The brick is arguably a legendary design, whereas the slant 4 has evolved through displacement changes, then into the S1000 design, and finally into a slant 6, which should probably be a choice as well.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

"Brick" Engine is an "original" BMW design, as is the Twin..the "slant" is a JAPMW (originally "designed" by Japan, and "copied" by Germany.)

Since "K" was designated and assigned in the mid 80's, the only REAL "K" is the "brick" engine.
A "true K" has a dry clutch, and seperate transmission. (Note: Japan previously made a "slant" 6 cylinder also, so yet another "copied" idea.)

Suppose i could stick a couple BMW logo's on the Busa, and call it a "K"....

Not much to argue about here. The brick was all BMW and nothing like it before or since. If I want an inline four, I'll buy a Japanese bike. They do 4's better for less than anyone ever will. I voted the K1200RS the best of course!

Being 6'6" makes comfort an issue on most things. Had to modify the shift lever to give my foot enough room to get under it, slam the bars all the way forward, other than that... PERFECTION.

would like to try a k13s though just for fun

I'm 6'4" and after modifying the shift lever on my 02 K12RS, my toe would scrape the pavement on tight corners . . ., and ended up having to go back to stock configuration.
Other than that, the RS was a "PERFECT" fit. It is / was truly a great bike.

Jason,

I hate like heck to tell you this, but stay away from K13S . . ., Because, if you ever ride one, you'll never go back to the RS. - No matter how good they are.

However, if you kept the RS and got a K13S too, you'd have the best of both worlds.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

This is my K bike. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

My K bike is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life.

My K bike, without me, is useless. Without my K bike, I am useless. I must ride my K bike true. I must ride smoother than my friends who either in front or behind me.

My K bike and I know that what counts in this war is not the number of miles we ride, the noise of our exhaust, or the beers we drink. We know that it is the fun that counts. We will have fun...

My K bike is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its throttle. I will keep my K bike clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God, I swear this creed. My K bike and I are the defenders against the dreaded GS. We are the masters of fun. We are the saviors of my life.
So be it, until the hangover hits. Peace!

No real surprises so far in this poll, to me anyway, as there are more owners of the KRS than the K13S. Currently owning one of each, not a surprise at all!

42 K1200S /K1300S owners. 37 K1200RS/GT owners.

If those numbers are no good do a new poll and break our the pre-2002 RS and remove the brick GTs. It's just numbers.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

The results of this poll do not necessarily reflect ownership and some owners may have altogether different priorities. I currently own a K13S and since maintence and reliability are my major concern, I voted for the K12RS. Had you asked which bike was more fun,I would have voted for the K13S.

I had 2 K bikes, a 89 K100 RS that would only run @125 when ridden across Montana. The current K1200 RS has been my best motorcycle. The new K12 and K13 that thought might be a replacement until I read about chain jumps and other engineering deficiencies.

Don't be discouraged . . ., Although, my previous K12s were a disappointment (from the standpoint of maintenance) - My K13 has been trouble free and a dream to ride. "Knock on Wood". I do still ride with my fringers crossed, though.

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

My basis of concern on the new K's is based upon BMWNA reaction to my misbuilt 1996 R1100RS. In summary, the piston rings were alighted, the Italian sprayed bores were damaged, the input shaft was damaged and torn 3 engine seals, All of this and other issues were found over 3 riding seasons. I had a 2" file with BMWNA with the final letter from them advising me to stop bothering my dealer with this stuff.
I just read about final drive failures on the new K1300 and various view as to the final drive engineering aspects.
I am getting older with less energy to deal with BMWNA over my motorcycle. My K1200RS was built during the time of assembly run down on the rod bolts, the same problem that was found on the hot rod 1000. More than one has failed its engine over this failure.

Good luck

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Surprisingly few votes for the KR's...woulda thought with all the Aussies who've joined recently, that those numbers would've been higher.

there are surprisingly very few K1300r's about in australia, i have seen a few K1300S models gettin around, but only ever spotted one other k1300r.
they only just recently dropped the price by $4k, so maybe a few more will pop up on the roads.

and YES.... the K1300R is the best K bike ever
cheers

Re: Best K Bike Ever?

Even though the current slant four K's are infinitely superior in performance, handling and suspension I had too give it to the Pre-1998 K for reasons of reliability and ease of maintenance.
I ran a early K100RT 230,000 miles before a tumbler on the 101 Frwy in Oxnard California did us part

Question Re: Best K Bike Ever?

There are 2 choices for those that had a K12RS/GT, years 98-04 brick.

Voting is split between the 2.

At this point the total for the 2 choices is "70."
