Push down on the passenger section of the seat as you turn the key.

I solved this problem by using a dimpled latch plate and by grooving the key barrel to increase lubricant flow. J/K you.

I am, have had the seat off thousand times before. This is not the problem, the key turns but it is like it is not connected inside.

slternate prssure on the seat as you turn the key. Have a carbon cover on mine that was improperly installed and could not get sufficient downward force on the mechanism.

4 screws will get on of the rear side pods off. Then you should be able to see the mechanism.

I apologize. I didn't realize you were having a significant problem. Hope it is an easy fix.

Re: Cant get seat off, how break in to the bike?

Got the seat off today, had to get help, pushed down and my friend pushed the seat to the right, we almost turned blue before it released.

The key turns the latch, but only 2/3 of the way, then the keytravel stops. Seems to be that the lockcylinders connection to the latch is worn. will have to take it apart and see if it can be fixed or if i need to buy a new lock mechanism for the seat.

Had that on both my 1200r and also on the second 1300r...take it apart and grease it ..(light grease) and also the seat.

I'm glad you got it figured out....every time I take my seat off, I wonder why BMW designed the access to the lock, for someone with hands the size of a 4 yr. old???!!!

The access to the key is a joke, if one has the original plastic parts in the rear. I swapped for this and it gives great access for adult hands. And it looks 10000% better on the bike.

The rear light on european bikes has platelight built in, 4 white led facing down. So just the original plate lights.

See this.

Pretty neat setup. Guess our D.O.T. decided ours needed to be more complicated and look worse.

Can you not just buy a european style rear light and fit?

One could do that. I think your non-US plate lighting is a more elegant solution to that problem, but, as cluttered as mine is, I am okay with my current configuration since I have the Sport Bags and BMW rear mud guard installed. Maybe the Wunderlich plate carrier and Beech's plate relocator to move the US light would be simpler and less expensive for us Yanks?

Re: Cant get seat off, how break in to the bike?

It is an Aluminum plate the size of a U.S. license plate extended on the left side shaped and drilled to hold the BMW license plate light. It allows removal of part of the material comprising the plate mount. PM Beech for more details or possibly a search.

Apologies to all for the thread drift.

Even though you have the key, you are supposed to gently whisper sweet nothings to your bike whenever you put your hand in that area.

Softly whisper "Tickle your ass with a feather?" If your cycle seem upset, react innocently and then say "I said, it seems like very nice weather."
