Re: US Zumo 550 owners

I've owned the 550 for about 3 yrs when the digitizer went crazy..touch screen seemed to lock up or it was self changing between different commands. But fixed it my self for around 30 bucks..see Zumo forums..

http://www.zumoforums.com/index.php?topic=14121.0

..You'll need be a registered(free) member to view..but well worth it if your a Zumo owner.

Went out and bought the 665..just in case I couldn't fix the 550..also subscribed to the optional XM Radio with traffic and weather alerts..came in handy on my trip to Maine via NYC and Hartford,Conn.

I believe that HJC now has a bluetooth version helmet(Sy-Max III) that maybe reasonable in price that will work with the 665/550 built in Bluetooth..might look into that.Riding 8+ hrs with custom molded earbuds starts to hurt...

Re: US Zumo 550 owners

First post here, sorry to bring up an old thread...

I'm looking to upgrade my Garmin SPlll to a Zumo 550 or 665 (as the 665 is replacing both the 550 and 660).

I'm more interested in the GPS aspect of the unit. A close friend of mine had a 550 and loved it. He upgraded to a 660 and did not like it at all. His opinion was to get the 550....

I've done some reading and know the screen is smaller on the 550 but I know both are very bright, feature 3d and are both very readable.

I've also read that the 665 will NOT display names of smaller side streets while your on a main route and is more difficult to use with gloves on (the old 550 in the Garmin cradle has side buttons). I would like to use the MP3 player which I believe is available on both, not interested in XM...

Can anyone confirm about the if the 665 is now showing the side streets and how well is it holding up compared to the old 550? I also think I read the 550 is much easier to navagate around (displaying different screens, etc), on while underway, true?

The 550 is on a closeout sale and the 665 is also on sale. Just trying to pick what suits me best...

Thanks ahead of time,

Re: US Zumo 550 owners

The 550 is discontinued. The 665 is still an active unit and gets better support, if needed. It is also much easier to read as a GPS. I use my 660 widescreen in town, and normal out of town, you can't do that, and many other options on a 550.

But to each, their own.

I don't know about this. I called Garmin this past week on my 550 that was out of warranty by two years. They were awesome. For $150 dollars they are replacing the unit for me. Not too shabby I'd say.

Thank you..

Does anyone know if the 665 shows side streets from main routes? Is the 665 fairly easy to navagate (change screens, etc) while underway?

Re: US Zumo 550 owners

The 660/665 will show side streets, if sufficently zoomed in. Mine is and does.

I undo this on long trips between cities.

Re: US Zumo 550 owners

I don't wish to listen to anything when I ride. I got my wife XM for the car for Christmas past, and honestly if I say there are three stations I listen to, I may be exaggerating.

It's like cable TV - the more stations that are offered, the less there is to watch.

Of course, you're reading the ravings of a man who pulled the radio head out of his car nearly a year ago to get the display repaired. Hasn't quite got shipped yet. Really don't miss it, either. Maybe once in a great while for traffic...
