USB Thumb Drive?

Greetings everyone
I've been reading the threads on using I pods and was wondering if it's possible to connect a USB thumb drive loaded with mp3's to the bike's USB input instead? Does the stereo recognize and play the mp3's or does the connected device have to be a player?
I ask because I'm not into the whole Apple thing. If the thumb drive isn't feasible the I'll likely just get a micro SD card for the Nav IV and play music through that. I read on the Garmin site that the Nav IV can accept up 32 Gb micro SD cards.
Thanks in advance for any insights!
Gary

Re: USB Thumb Drive?

Everything you asked is possible. Many K1600 owners are doing that now while waiting for the software update to the NO/USB issue, were the Ipod stops working after a few songs are played.

Re: USB Thumb Drive?

Hi All,

I just picked up my '12 K1600 GT this past Saturday. Was planning on playing some of my tunes so I loaded a number mp3 files on a memory stick. When I insert it into the USB/Ipod adapter and turn on the radio, I can see the memory stick light up as if it's reading it but when I change the source to USB, all I get is No USB. I see a prior post where Furman refers to a software upgrade.
Is there a step-by-step procedure to getting a memory stick to work or do I have to wait for BMW to fix a premature equipment release???

Re: USB Thumb Drive?

Keep in mind, if you've imported your songs into iTunes they aren't likely to be MP3 unless you've changed the default settings. Default on iTunes is AAC which the audio system does NOT recognize on a USB stick.

If you do have an iPod, there is a specific way to connect it and then you won't have the No USB issue. Mine has worked fine ever since.

Re: USB Thumb Drive?

I cut these tunes directly from original (not copies) CD's using Roxio. They are mp3 files and I verified it by checking the Properties of the file. I spoke with the dealer this morning and they say there's a know issue that some owners are getting this NO USB message. I'm just not sure why some older bikes don't have this problem.

I'm going to use a different mfr USB memory stick. I doubt it'll make a difference but back in the days of the 386 processors, I remember having floppy disk drive that just would not read a specific manufacturer's floppy disk. I'll post when I get it working.

Perhaps another stick. Perhaps an upgrade.

I used the "stand on one foot" method of connecting my iPod and it's worked fine since then.

It's amazing this is so complicated. This isn't exactly a new technology. Couldn't BMW have just cut and pasted someone's system in?

This is how I did it. I haven't had any problems since:

Ok, here we go. My apologies if I get it wrong. Even the dealer near me in Escondido said it's a pretty strange process.

First, I bought my cable at Amazon for $20. What a rip that the dealer charges $72.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...00_i00_details

I'm not affiliated with that company or amazon in anyway. Many of the sellers in the Amazon store also give the instructions.

Turn the bike off. Plug the Aux portion of the plug into your iPod only.

Turn the bike on and scroll to Aux on the stereo. Then, plug in the USB portion of the plug (why they both have to be plugged in is beyond me).

Scroll to iPod connection and wait a few seconds. If you press mode you should be able to see, songs, playlists, artist, album, etc.

I rode for a couple of hours and it worked fine. I even made a stop for lunch and it worked perfectly when I resumed.

Re: USB Thumb Drive? -- Update

Just to give you all an update I decided to try another memory stick. The one that I couldn't get to work was mfr'd by HP-8 Gig. I tried a Lexar-8 Gig and it worked immediately. It saw all my tunes. I even shut off the bike 3 time to see if it was a fluke but each time the radio picked up playing again.

The only difference that I can see between the two memory sticks is that with the first (the HP-which didn't work) I performed a full formatting before installing the mp3 files. With the Lexar I only performed a Quick formatting. Just to clarify, in both instances I copied the 32 tunes from the same directory on my C drive. I'll try doing a quick formatting of the HP and retry playing it. It 's possible the difference in the method of formatting makes the difference. I don't see why it should make a difference BUT my radio is now playing the tunes. .......BTW, my computers are PC based.

Hope this helps others.

Thanks Buz. Super helpful. Can I take it that after you stopped for lunch you were able to just start the bike again and the connection was good or do you have to go through the procedure you describe in your post each time you head out for a ride?

The memory sticks had a number of files on them. A simple delete doesn't actually remove the file from memory. Besides reducing fragmentation, 'though I never investigated how files are stored on this type of media, it also makes it a bit more difficult to recover the information if I should ever loose the m'stick.

I tried this connection business and it worked for a while but after 5 hours my ipod started advancing songs after 20-30 seconds. It did that for half an hour before quitting again (no ipod connection message). I have to go through this process after each failure and I get another 2-5 hours before it fails again in the same way. >> better but still not a permanent solution for me. Has this actually permanently worked for everyone else?
