2017 S1000XR Not Coming to the US?

If you read the K1300S forum, you may know that I recently totaled my bike. I'm trying to decide what to replace it with and I'm interested in a S1000XR. I've read about the handle bar vibration issue in the magazine reviews and the forums. I've also read this was addressed for 2017. I contacted my local dealer to see if he knew when the 2017's would start arriving. He told me the 2017 is not being imported.

I couldn't believe it. Suspicious that he may be trying to push a sale on his 3 existing 2016 models, I called BMW customer support. The lady I spoke with confirmed that the 2017 S1000XR is not in the order guide. No extra 5HP, no vibration fix. I don't know either is necessary, but it's disappointing to me all the same.

Can anyone confirm or deny the information I've been given?

Well, that experiment didn't seem to pan out.

It's being sold in Canada. What colour would you like me to reserve for you?

For price the difference alone the 16 makes sense
to me. you can do a lot of mods for the price
difference between a 16 and 17. 5 extra hp
is nice but don't think it will be a real usable
increase, IMHO

I didn't realize the price was changing? Or, are you just talking about the incentives on the 16 that make them (slightly) cheaper?

Re: 2017 S1000XR Not Coming to the US?

Yes ,just the price reduction of being a 16
model and incentives offered by BMW. I
have not heard of a price increase for 17
but have no idea about that. As far as
slightly cheaper, i've seen them going
for 14,999 without bags and nav,but
they do have the Heated grips ,cc,
shift assist, and everything else
the premium package offers. That's
a lot lower than the 17,000 or 17,500
that they were selling them for at the
beginning of 2016.Not to mention the
dealer incentives offered. Can't speak
for anyone else but that is a lot of money
to me.

Re: 2017 S1000XR Not Coming to the US?

To the best of my knowledge, there will be a 2017 BMW S1000XR sold in the U.S. I just read about the specifications and new color schemes in my BMW Owners News magazine. Both it and the S1000R were given the power upgrades and revisions to the handlebars (not sure what those were) to reduce vibration. Hopefully I'll get to take one out for a test ride to see if I notice a difference between it and the 2016 that I rode earlier this year.

This would make absolutely no sense as one supposed justification for killing off the K1300S was that the S1000XR was there to fill the gap in the "SPORT touring" category...

The only way this would make sense is that they'd be releasing a true replacement for the KS but alas we know that's not going to happen...

Great opportunity for you to get another KS rather than the XR, surely you can still find one on the dealer floor somewhere...

My dealer said they had a black one crated in the back that had fallen off the inventory somehow. So it is possible. I think I'd miss the upgrades though (it's not a motorsport edition).

I'm not even interested in this bike, but it's killing me, what are "advanced handlebar weights"? Do you simply mean heavier weights?

Re: 2017 S1000XR Not Coming to the US?

Spoke with MAX BMW yesterday. They have no '17s in stock and don't know when or if they'll get any. IF the '17s are coming to the US it's a little late! They have quite a few '16s in stock. The vibration issue may have killed too many sales. I tested a '15 and the vibration was awful…a deal breaker no matter the $ incentives.

Agree the vibe issue probably killed alot of sales. Even though it really is a non issue. Set of bar ends and some miles and it just doesn't even register as a problem

Depends though Karl. Are you going to gamble that you can make it go away (early adopters). Like Bob, I demo'd one in 2015. I freely admit that I'm VERY sensitive to handlebar buzz, but my impressions were that the motor/handling were great, but the buzz in the bars drove me nuts in the 20 miles I was on the bike.

Re: 2017 S1000XR Not Coming to the US?

With $4,000 off on new S1000XR's right now, something is up. "They" want them gone. And I don't see the S1000R as a hot seller either, even though I like it and have a new one coming in a few days. My passion for it must be the kiss of death just like the K bikes. BMW is doing fine with their nostalgia series twins, GS bikes and RT's. The S bike is coming up on more than ten years for the series, wonder what is in the future. BMW's move on the RT's a couple years back to lower them 20 mm was smart. I eyeballed one yesterday and it still is a large bike and not my thing visually, a great machine when your on one riding though. Now I have to check that survey box about design next time.

I completely agree, BMW should have fitted heavier bar ends in development, they also should have ensured all demo XRs had at least 1k miles on it and the rev limiter off prior to sending it out, then they could have demonstrated its potential and how the vibes go away. this was an opportunity for BMW to be proactive and prob would have increased sales. not that it matters to me I have mine and am happy with it so if it becomes a bit of a rarity so be it.

Yes , I love my 2016 modified XR to bits.
Somehow the vibrations does not bother me at 240km/h.

I'm picking up a brand new 2016 XR next week, trading my 2015 RR. MAX made me an offer I couldn't refuse. In test riding the bike I noticed the handlebar vibration because I read about it here and elsewhere but if I hadn't, I wouldn't have noticed it (the demo and all 2016 models have been retrofitted with the 2017 "fix"). I'll probably add heavier bar ends as well, but I don't plan on leaning into these handlebars or gripping them tightly so don't expect any issues with vibrations for me.

I love mine, traded my 2015 K13S MS for it, came out even on the deal. Great bike, it gets ridden much more than my K was.
I bought the Evo-Tech bar ends for mine, works great, I don't even notice the buzz anymore.
