OEM or after-market seat for K1200RS?

My 2000 K1200RS has a small "beginning" rip -- it's not a full-blown rip, just the beginning. I was going to live with it, and I may still do that, but I've started looking for either a new or used OEM replacement seat, an after-market seat, or a seat cover. I've looked on eBay and found a couple of decent used seats (no rips) for about $150. I think a brand new OEM seat is about $500 and most of the new aftermarket seats are about $450.

Any suggestions?

I've even thought of going to someplace that specializes in upholstering .

One suggestion here. Still comfortable 1.5 year's & 10k miles. BUT, if I do this again I'll use the Sargent foam!

Re: OEM or after-market seat for K1200RS?

This may help.. from our current newsletter...

This last year or so we've been hearing from many K1200RS owners saying their seats are cracking and starting to look like dog shite after years of use... Rather than buy a new seat, HT Moto has a wonderful seat recovering service with a 2 week turn around. I see lots of BMW's listed. Costs start at only $80 and go waaay past $250 and they have multiple patterns and colors to choose from.

http://www.htmoto.us/store/c/64-Spor...at-Covers.aspx

Here's an example of their work...

yes save your money from buying new! HTMOTO is awsome! I could not have been happier with mine.
I even had them put gel in mine but thats soley up to you. many colors and options available
If I remember I think I paid $225 with the gel insert.

on my 2000 KRS, I use a Bill Meyer Seat. This bike has 130676 on it and the seat is still perfect

That's nice! and for $225, if the stock seat fits, looks like the way to go...

Re: OEM or after-market seat for K1200RS?

The photo from Pirate, post 3 in this thread, is of my bike. HT Moto did a great job, turnaround as promised, fit and finish couldn't be better. I opted for the gel insert, and while not comparing the seat as refinished back to back with the stock seat, I'm very happy with it. Some people didn't like the stock seat but I was always comfortable on it, and I'm very happy with the improvement with the work that HT Moto performed. Here's the thread from when the work was performed, http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=62428

On their site I see that they have a cover for the K1200RS for about $80 (all black) but this is for the cover only. I would have to install the cover ????

You're suggesting that they have a service whereby I send them my seat and they install the cover and send the finished seat back to me ????

Yes, you can do it yourself, or send it to them to do - which is what I did, and I recommend doing so, they did a very professional job, two week turnaround, all for plus or minus $275 including return shipping - and you can pick up to three colors, I think you can ask for them to send you the color samples of the material they will use and you can make your choice readily.

Thanks for the clarification.

I would prefer that someone skilled in the art of upholstery install the cover -- and that person is NOT me.

Re: OEM or after-market seat for K1200RS?

OEM K12GT heated seat that fits both the RS and GT models?

Thicker than the standard RS seat.

Electrical mods need to use for heat on the RS

Re: OEM or after-market seat for K1200RS?

When my original 98 K1200RS was totaled 2 years ago, I found another in northern Ga. with only 20,000 miles. except for the ohlen [sic] shocks, it is box stock [including foot pegs, handle bars, and round mirrors].
t looks new, except for the cracking in the seat.

Any one know if an original seat cover or replacement is available??
I am afraid if I simply purchase a used [20 year old] seat, it will also develop cracking.

Re: OEM or after-market seat for K1200RS?

I doubt one can buy an OEM cover.Replacing that could be very difficult. The OEM is I think "vacuum formed" on the seat foam and they apply adhesive before they vacuum form them so the cover is well glued on.

The plastic pan also doesn't always take kindly to stapling.Somewhat rigid plastic and may crack when stapling.

Adhesive for DIYers? Not regular contact cement that's for sure.Heat from the sun is enough to deactivate that adhesive and cover may bubble up.3M makes an adhesive good up to 220F?

Bert take a look at this video from HT Moto, (links in prevoius posts) they'll sell you a seat cover for about $80.00, but the installation is the trick. From what they told me, the stock BMW seat cover is glued to the foam, so removing it without damaging the foam is tricky, and the installation takes some skill and a proper stapler,

I have an extra stock seat. Pretty well in new condition.

Been stored since I bought a Bill Meyer seat 15 years ago from a guy here on the site.

PM me if you want it.

Cheers
