Re: K1200s K1200r TURBO

There was a Finish fellow with a thread, Eka I believe. Spent a winter installing a turbo on his K bike and it didn't quite make it through the next summer. Pretty cool though.

This place will install the Turbo system for 8000 Euro and make it Street Legal.... Not sure about the reliability / longevity of the engine though.

Re: K1200s K1200r TURBO

Hi!

I bought Eka's turbo K12S. I think it was late 2007. It had been driven 19.000 km.
Eka got problems with valves after bike was serviced by BMW dealer and waste gate was not opening at all due to wrong assembly made by the dealer. So he drove it having several bars boost. In the end of the day one valve was broken breaking camshaft. Not other damages.

I have replaced camshaft and valve. Bike was working first year wonderful with 0,7 bar/250 HP. Then I got hungry. I was raising boost to 1.0 bar by using turbo screw while german turbo builder MAB told me that at 1,1 bar crankshaft will broke. They have tested that couple of thimes in USA in salt lake. So, by 1,0 bar is where those problems starts. Motor works perfectly with 1.0 bar, but in parking lot some one was adjusting turbo screw and next time when driving a bit more aggressive i made mistake in changing gear. Rev's went up, so did boost and again a had problems with valves. Nothing series, but I had to change collets in valves. They were broken and all valves did not close 100% anymore. So I changed them.

Next time I had same problem in track. Rev's and boost too high. Got one valve broken. I turned motor down to idle and one valve was falling down into cylinder. Piston broken. No other remarkable damages. New piston and new valve changed. Damn much work.

I have that bike still. I have not been driving lot with it. I have been too busy with my work and I have always had 2-3 other bikes to drive as well.

Now it has a bit over 50.000 km in odo and is waiting for new clutch plates ordered today.

From my point of view it is amazing to see how much gearbox and rear drive can handle power without any problems. In powertrain only weak point is clutch. Valve springs are weak point in motor itself. They are too weak leading into troubles with valves/collets. Or maybe I should drive only with 0,7 bar/250 HP instead of 1.0 bar/300+ HP. But that's not fun anymore ;-)

Wow, cool to hear Eka's bike lives. Talk about addiction to power, you rock.
