Opening day!

10cm had fallen overnight. Looked great!

(How d'ya like the dragon on my helmet? )

Went up with my regular buds and they wanted to go down Main run. It's a big black... It wasn't groomed...
I looked at it from the chair lift on my way up. Nice, steep, barely no tracks to speak of...

What the heck!

I went with them!

Terrorised, I went down slowly, for me... Long sweeping arcs in knee deep powder flowing all the way up to my chest... Glorious !

The guys patiently waiting for me after every slope.

"No friends on powder days they say"...
Well I have to say that it's not true. Not with these guys.

Shoudda seen the sh!t eating grin on my face!

What a feakin' day! In all senses of the word...

More later... And thanks for backing me up!

Not back yet...

I must have skipped some exercises... On day two, my back was pretty stiff.

Day 3 was worse. I stayed home day 4 to give it a rest. I barely made it outta bed...
Also it was really cold. Québec cold! Minus 18*C on top!!
Unusual for the Monashees.

Turns out that I wasn't disciplined enough. I occasionally did some of them back exercises with the exercise ball but prolly not often enough... Now I know why they were on the list.

The legs aren't strong enough either. They ache... Not only when I jump out of bed but also when I'm going down the slopes... I wouldn't throw them in a situation where I had to depend on them... A sure fail...

On that issue, I don't feel guilty. Sure it's not the same muscles but I must have cycled over 3000km this summer. Many of them going uphill for miles... but...
No quick fixes for unused quads. You spend 60 years building them up and three and a half flipping' months sitting in a LazyBoy and that flushes it all down the drain...

Guess I'll just have to ski them back into shape. I'll take the groomers. Maybe some pow... But no tree skiing just yet.
As for the back, I'll have to put more effort into physiotherapy and do all the boring exercises...

Minor setback...

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers

It's really pretty impressive where you are considering where you were last year.
I think skiing your way back into shape might be the best thing you could be doing...

I'm doing back exercises and it's really helping out.

The trace app said that I skied 16km yesterday with an average speed of 48 clicks / hour. I've really slowed down!

Going back today. But boy it's cold!
Québec cold!!!

Snow dogs visible yesterday!

Cheers

Wanna see some nice Ariens products? St-Romuald at their newish distribution center. But by invitation only the warehouse part.Very impressive. That they had the part I needed for an Ariens from the 70's was also impressive.I sure can't say the same for older Craftsman products....quite a few N/As.Ariens lobby in St-Romuald? That would put most if not all Holiday Inns to shame if just for the bathrooms. And the pretty receptionist.

Want snow? Monashees are getting more as of right not.Louis is probably riding his taureau? Time to go run behind my Toro I just heard the snowplow come up the road and bury my entrance.En 6ieme au fond le Tecumseh Sno-King!

So? What happened to the Murray aka Craftsman blower? Popped a weld in the scoop and the auger twisted right out?Almost happened to me, I was within seconds of self destruction and pretty common on them as I found out later....!

Re: Screwed up...

More snow dogs on Saturday!

Mt Roberts in the left background. Really freakin' steep!

I'll be skiing that again next year!

Time to head out to Red Mountain for my leg building exercises! These, I REALLY don't mind!

Cheers

Nope, trees full of snow are called snow ghosts!

Snow dogs are when the sunshine flows through tiny snow particles and creates a illumination floating above ground.

Doesn't happen often.

This one has two of'em and one even had a rainbow in it !

Pretty cool!

Even I needed to know more...

Turns out that in Wikipedia they're called Sun dogs... Guess that the skiers here put a local spin on it!

From Wikipedia:
Sun dogs are a member of a large family of halos, created by light interacting with ice crystals in the atmosphere... Sun dogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the Sun is close to the horizon.

Yup! I was in the lineup as early as I could.

Had to shovel my driveway first though...

I shovelled half of it at 1:00am. 8 inches on the ground. When I got up, another 5 inches had come from the skies...
The first half was easier than the other half... plus the berm!

I was out there at 7:00am and 2 hours later it was finally over.

The skiing was heavenly. A foot of Monashee powder, some coming up all the way to my chest, even a couple of face shots!

The legs were begging for mercy but had to keep going. The sun came out in the afternoon...
All in all, I had 10 runs totalling about 15000 feet of vertical over 12 miles.
What a day!

Got home and I had a glass of Sauternes and a couple of toasts with some homemade foie gras pâté I received for Christmas, sat in my trusty LazyBoy which was my ever constant position last winter, and quickly fell asleep!

When I woke up, I sat in a daze for a while looking at nothing in particular. Finally I got up and made some spaghetti for supper. Opened a bottle of wine and this was the perfect ending for the day.

Went back to the LazyBoy to watch a movie and woke up two or three times during the evening before I finally had the courage to get up at midnight and go upstairs to bed. Slept till six o'clock.

Was I ever spent yesterday!

Still not tree skiing because I can't trust the legs to react quickly enough in them tricky situations. Plus they aren't strong enough yet either to keep me going in a crunch...

Still, I'm skiing!

Re: Screwed up...

Another great day of skiing yesterday!

Skied all day, a social stop for lunch but otherwise the legs are getting stronger and my friends seem to think that I'm already going faster than them!!!

Congrats LOUIS!!
This is very good news considering the damage that was done.

I think you should ski a bit more conservative for a while. Not that you are old my friend, but I doubt certain part of your body could take another hit.

If you insist (or feel a need) to take risks, try to hit an arm or a shoulder next time instead ;-)

Not really going that fast... I think that they're just teasing me.

Pretty careful...

Re: Screwed up...

Some pics to explain some of the above posts...

This car was parked by my carport 7 days ago...

It's been snowing at a pretty good clip over that period.

This is what I had to shovel the other morning before going to the hill...

And this is what the hill looked like... Beautiful!!

Cheers

Ski safe Louis.
Last week was my turn to be scared. Lost a ski while testing new Heads. did about 300 ft on one before crashing face first. I looked like a losing boxer on the 12th round. Pulled my hip and got a small hematoma.

One week in Cuba will arrange all. I still have not figured how to post a picture.
Cheers Louis

Re: Screwed up...

It's been over a year now since I started this thread and although I'm doing a helluva lot better I'm still not where I thought I would be.

Repaired but not like new...

The legs are getting stronger and my back seems to have found some of its flexibility again thanks to getting back on top of my physio program on a daily basis. My walk is still suffering though as some of the muscles haven't gained enough flexibility back yet. Seems that I must get that back in order or I might have some hip problems later on... more physiotherapy!

I'm skiing every day and although I'm not skiing in the trees yet I'm going down a lot of terrain that I didn't think I'd be able to this early on. I'm not up to a point yet that I can trust the legs to not only react quickly enough but also muscle me through the hazards. I'll just have to ski them back into shape!

Anyhow, I wanted to say thanks to all who helped me pull through this ordeal, it's been a long ride... This community has a lot going for it...

The nurses pics helped keep the smile on my face all along, even the nasty ones that made their way through the diligent censors and the I-BMW censorship algorithm!

Gotta get going, big storm coming our way!

Bring it ON !

Yeah.....playing in the atmospheric river? Never seen such a weather description in BC but for this morning.Lucky guys up there, staying well below freezing? We missed most of the storm so only 4-5" of snow overnight.Very wet....fell at 34F. And raining on the edge of the mighty Columbia watershed.

We got a foot and a half!

However the temps went up above freezing under 1200 meters...

So I had to ski on Paradise, it's above 1400 meters!

My driveway, on the other hand, was six inches of tightly compacted snow. It's turned to mush... The WRX has to scratch and claw it's way up the hill.

Re: Screwed up...

Glad you're getting better Louis! Only one downside to all this improvement: I kinda miss all those "naughty nurse" pictures. Worth it, though, to see you getting better. A lot of that is due to hard work on your part. Hang in, man.

Thx bud,

But from my end, I still ain't doing enough physio... lack of motivation...

Still so much to get done to get back... sometimes, it seems like it's just taking sooo long and that it's toooo much work...

Oh well, I gotta remember that you guys are pulling for me and that I should use that as extra motivation!

Meanwhile, how about a pic of a real nasty nurse unclear on the concept... needing some form of reeducation , old school style ?

In the pre-Trump era, this would be unnacceptable...

BWAHAHAhahahaahhaahahahhahaahahhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Re: Screwed up...

Well I wanted to race in the bobsled event down Spokane street right in downtown Rossland last Saturday in Rossland's 119th Winter Carnival but my team, the Damn Fast Eager Beavers, wasn't really enthusiastic about my being healed enough...

Sure I've been skiing every day but my walk is still suspicious... my running was no more than three steps...

I was basing my intentions on the fact that I hadn't ever seen an accident on the bobsled course over the years and from my experience, our sled was pretty safe. The race is pretty cool. They ice the street the night before and it's got a couple of steep pitches!

So I resigned myself to working on the track as a Search and Rescue volley, marshalling the course and providing general first aid as needed.

For the first time in many years, there wasn't just one but two accidents!
The first one, the sled crashed into a barrier and one of the occupants broke his coccyx.
The second accident, the bobsled lost control and plowed into the crowd that had gathered too close to the course immediately after a security guard had asked them to back off.
The outcome was not as bad as I thought it would be as we loaded three injured subjects in the ambulance. The driver was concussed and possible knee injury, the other racer had a broken femur and possibly more, and finally a bystander was thought to have a broken back. Luckily, Rossland has 64 physicians and surgeons living in our small town of 3500 citizens. Three ER trauma surgeons and two ER nurses were on hand before I even got to the site of that accident less than 125 meters from my surveillance post.
All in all it was a tense two hours of intense rescue efforts.
As it turned out, the only broken bone was the femur of the second occupant.

If you wanna see more of the races, here's a link to an uneventful ride

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=2QI_rwAe_o0

Not sure if I'm going to re-enter the race next year...

Cheers

Louis: After the bobsled race you can get a crazy fast dirt bike and make plans for entering the Desert 100 Iron Man Poker Run!

This thread must be withering. Where are all those naughty nurse photos we used to see? Only one of the little vixens on this page. Doggone! We're gettin' antsy and tired of just waiting around for more!
