Port Macquarie October?

G'day all, so now it's getting closer and as I don't know how to move a thread I'll restart this in here Wes (Brickman) has a work conference to attend in Port Macquarie late October, so we have decided to do a fast run down, plan is leave Darwin early on the 17th, straight through run to Alice Springs, next day 18th to Port Agusta, 19th through to Canberra then stooge around a bit and get into Port Macquarie (accommodation already booked) on the 22nd, he's got his bike booked in for a 90,000km service at Rock BMW there, his conference runs from 23rd through to 25th, we'll pull back out early Monday 26th to head home taking it a bit slower going back though lol. I'll be at a loose end in Port Macquarie for those few days so if there's any local/NSW riders interested in showing me the sights and the best riding roads give me a yell or chuck it up here please? Cheers Lou

You must be talking about Brad with the Triumph at the Royal Walcha 😉 The Commercial Hotel is also a great place to stay and eat 🍗

Re: Port Macquarie October?

So getting close now, the old girl has had a tune up, valves adjusted, throttle bodies synced, new spark plugs and air filter, will change the oils etc the week before we leave, the tyres should be fine, these Bridgestone T30 GTs look like they'll handle the run no problems, driving lights and roo whistles fitted, just need to start the packing and repacking and repacking always start with too much then cut it down but at least the RT has loads of luggage capacity looking forward to catching up with some of you down there then it'll be sorting everything for the rally in March

Re: Port Macquarie October?

Ok just a bit over a week to go, changed engine oil and filter, gearbox oil, diff oil, clutch fluid and will drop into dealer to do the brakes and brake servo change and flush tomorrow, oils didn't look too bad, slightly discoloured but no shiny stuff that shouldn't have been there . Checked the brake pads, well over 50% on the front, rears look a bit low so I'll get them to drop a new set in there while they're playing around. One of the techs at the dealer is an absolute guru on suspensions so I'm going to get him to set up the Ohlins to my weight, rear is a tad soft, suspect the original owner was just a wee bit lighter than me or it might just be I'm a fat f%#* . According to BMWs service schedule the alternator belt should be changed out at 60,000kms, she's at 50,000kms now, I've got a new one so I'll throw that on and keep the old one as a spare, better that than having to change by the side of the road . Just about sorted out the packing so nearly all ready to go

Sounds good Lou, all the boxes are ticked!
Keep us updated on when your going to blast through here, the chances of me getting to meet up or ride are very slim, but possible, so keep me informed, you never know.

Cheers

Re: Port Macquarie October?

Yep Mat, all good, new rear brake pads in, fronts were at about 80% but they reckoned the rears were about 25%, pretty near what I'd thought anyway, nearly had a heart attack when they told me the price of genuine BMW rear pads $121 per set just for the rear , they had a set of Brembo pads at $52 so she got the Brembos dropped in, feels like a totally different bike with the Ohlins tweaked, guy knows his stuff, made me jump on and off her in full gear then set the sag etc, then he ballasted the side bags and top box to what I'd normally be carrying on a big trip, reset everything, made notes for me so I can change between the solo and loaded settings, 3 clicks up on the preload when fully loaded, no alteration to rebound, feels even more planted than she did before as well as seems to sit just slightly higher when stationary, I think I've got your phone number so I'll flick you a txt when we leave and when we're getting close mate.

Re: Port Macquarie October?

Well trip done and dusted, made a slight variation, instead of stooging round at Port Macquarie I hooked up with some Ulysses guys and rode the nice roads up around Windsor for a couple of days. Trip down was uneventful, first two days were both big days, Katherine to Alice Springs 1250kms then Alice Springs to Port Augusta another 1200+km day, slit off from Wes next day and stopped at Euston, then onto Canberra next day, Wes went straight through from Port Augusta to Canberra in one run. Stayed with mate in Canberra for a few days then slipped up to Windsor, only drama I had was just outside Windsor, punctured rear tyre, hole too bloody big to plug so trailer job into nearest bike shop, new rear tyre and back on the road. Return trip I broke down into nice shorter runs, much easier on the old bones the R1200RT performed faultlessly even in 40 C heat up the middle, she used just on 250mls of oil for the whole trip with an average fuel consumption of 5.1 l per 100kms, Tennant Creek and we did the final 980kms together home. The 1200 definitely suits me better as a long distance tourer, that nearly 100kgs weight difference meant I wasn't struggling with slow speed stuff, the 1600 is just too much bike for me anyway the tyres wore well, the front now with nearly 14000kms still looks to be only 50% gone, rear had to be replaced, these Bridgestone T30 GTs are bloody good, will be using them for a while I reckon. So home safe and all good, till next ride folks take care.

It's always good to get back home, Lou(bre). Especially when you rode sooo far away from it in the first place!
