Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

Sometimes when the end of the ride is near its OK to just give up and enjoy the view.

Other times there's no one around. Playtime.

But when we do come up on a bike we usually pass. It just seems the right thing to do. After all, an empty road is a happy road.

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

I think I'm not riding fast enough. Washington is tough, ask Louis. I was in lane #1 on the freeway the other day, going about 80, I could see someone coming up through traffic behind me. When he saw me he counted coup with a quick buzz by on my lane marker and went on at about 100. I'm just too old I guess, I did not chase him.

Old , your not old ! You were just having an ' off ' day. Now , get back on your bike , get out on that freeway and chase every bike you see and pass them. Get going .

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

Yep, I pretty much chase down bikes in front of me, but then if I see them in front I'm probably already gaining on them anyway.

Last June while touring in Colorado, I chased down a bike I saw pulling out onto the road in front of me. Took some doing to catch up too, and then he hit a canyon. Turned out he was loafing a bit on the straights (well over the speed limit), but in the curves, he pushed the bike hard over and was leaning off it as well. All I could do to keep up, and some of that was using K1300s power to catch up. Eventually he waved me in front and followed me for a while.

After 20-30 miles of this, we pulled over at an overlook and talked. He was riding a bare Triumph Triple 900. Turns out he was normally a canyon carver in California but was visiting someone in Colorado and was just out on a day trip.

We rode to the next gas station together, scraping some stuff in the curves along the way.

Once passed by what seemed like a thousand lead wings while I was reclining among the safety boulders along Independence Pass waiting for the owie to stop and the dust to settle. That count? Kind a always been old and in the way...

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

Did I say "lead wing" out loud? shoot.

Our little group once caught up to a Denver MC cop on I-70 westbound leaving Denver bright and early for a Sunday ride. After we dipped the front ends with brake lights blazing, he shouted "Speedometer check!" and we were off and running. Our big bike in the group was a Kawasaki KZ1300, the only one that really was able to walk away from a surprisingly healthy Harley. Sorry, no Gold Wings in the group that day, and no crashes that I can remember. Oh, and I will never admit that an old Gold Wing, wire spoke wheels vintage, spanked me and the Suzuki like a step child in Boulder Canyon. Sun was in my eyes...

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

If I'm doing 80 in a 65 in the left lane with little traffic in the right next to me and get passed by car or truck, bike or plane that's going faster than me, then I show them who's boss.

I don't chase. I catch and overtake.

Selected "other" as I chase down bikes which are on catch me for fun mode, but this motivation completely disappear if the rider in front of me is female. Don't know why but suddenly there is no need to chase to overpass, just stay nicely behind!

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

I've developed a philosophy of always traveling faster than traffic. By slowing their speed relative to mine I gain some measure of control over the environment. I explained this to a traffic court judge once who said he drove a Triumph TR6 and knew exactly what I meant.
If there is no traffic, I practice. I'm older and fatter than I was, so now everything is about technique, muscle memory, awareness. I'm probably at that stage where I'm the one being chased down, but dammit, I got good form!

Don't pass the cruisers on their right, especially if there's not a lot of room. They all got cell phones and 911 on speed dial. I wonder about the effectiveness of the safety bandana and halter top... For the last forty years I can' help but refer to flip-flops as Filipino Motorcycle boots. hmmm,

What I mean is when I'm passing and some bloke comes and passes me doing over 90, which isn't the best idea, especially in San Antonio. You've got hard chargers, dive bombers, lane squatters, lifted trucks, out of state drivers as well. The out of state drivers usually sweat bullets. San Antonio doesn't exactly understand what it means to merge onto to the highway and will stack up traffic 5 miles for no reason

Hahaha, I once passed a couple Harleys on my road with 2 different bikes. I live right in the center of 10 miles of sweepers with few intersecting roads or driveways, I passed a couple Harleys putting along 5 miles under the speed limit as soon as I turned onto my road. I got home, got off my Rocket, and I see them come putting by. I hopped on my Sprint, and passed them again, just for laughs.

I chased a car once. Route 89 N in Vertmont, Fathers Day W/E long time ago. Bike Week in NH so the staties were elsewhere. Hopped on the highway in Sharon and traffic was moving. 85 became 95 quick. At 100 traffic thinned. At 125 it was only a Mercedes 4 matic and me for the next 20 miles. Best riding I've ever done in my life. Route 89 through the mountains. I felt like I was in a plane. I had to see who was driving. Turned out to be a woman. Bet it was Muriel Farrington. She lives up there and knows the roads. I know she likes speed, met her at the TT last year. If not for the rain. I don't chase anything. I catch up to everything.

Re: Do You Chase Down Other Motorcycles?

One time I didn't chase a bike down that I've always wished I had. I was riding my Daytona Orange R90s in rural Indiana going about 75mph up a country 2-lane. Saw a motorcycle headlight coming at me (daytime headlights) at about the same speed.

Imagine my surprise when another Daytona Orange R90s went by me in the other direction!

Only other orange R90s I ever saw in Indiana, I think.
