Handle bar switches recall

Hello All,

I was talking to the dealer the other day and found that there's a recall on the handle bar switches.
They will replace all switches. Mine are in order now and will be replaced as soon as the roads here are rideable.

Any info on models and years included in the "recall"?

I believe all K bikes from 2009 and newer. Other models, I'm not certain, but it likely covers all the other models too. I was told of the recall last fall at the dealer when it was a whisper, and that's all they told me, as I only owned a K.

Re: Handle bar switches recall

Now they step up, after the switch problems have been going on for years. Last year or so I had to replace both handlebar switches and additionally the ignition switch, at a cost around $850. The left switch was previously replaced once on warranty.

Wouldn't it be nice if BMW would get out in front of these problems? How long did it take for them to step up on the antenna ring and timing chain jump-guard issue. By dragging their feet for years they pay for the problem in the end anyway and compound it by allowing the problem(s) to fester for years.

I'll check with my dealer to see if I can get reimbursed for the switches I already paid for.

Re: Handle bar switches recall

Craig, I was told about the recall for the switches by Blackfoot service dept. Taking it in when the chrome plated brass quick disconnects I ordered get here, as they are also going to do the fuel pump recall.

Good news
I had read on the MOA site there was a Campaign on the RTs, but when I asked about other bikes covered, nobody replied.

Made an appt for my S for that Hot Start thing. That will be addressed and they also said that there is a recall on switch gear that they will do at the same time.

Re: Handle bar switches recall

I will ask my BMW dealer about this on Monday, bike is going in for tyres in 4 weeks, 2 weeks before the first australian iBMW rally in mid March.
Not sure I want to be messing around with switches that close to the rally.
Anyway, will post a response here on Monday.

Cheers

I don't know about other models, I initially called because of the continental tire recall.
This switch recall is for all switches on the handlebar, I do know that. I would think that it's for all K bikes that run the same switches though going back to 2009 as is mentioned in earlier post.

Handle bar switch recall

I just had both sides replaced on my 2009 K1300S at Ride West BMW in Seattle. Under recall at no cost to me.

The new switches seem to work just fine; nice timing for me as my right hand switch was not reading the oil indicator. I'm a happy boy.

Work was done Thursday January 22.

Any reason not to just wait until one fails on this recall? (Other than a possible no-start condition)

I can't think of any. I would switch them out on your next dealer visit.

Phil,
Are they doing the hot start at no charge? I heard that was coming to an end this past December.
I think my bike needs it as well and was wondering if I'd have to pony up.

The service manager said that they are required to replicate the issue and that if they do then BM will authorize the Hot Start kit at no charge. It has happened to me several times in the past month. Once when I stopped and shut it off to ask directions ( I know-real men don't ask directions) and had to wait 5 mins till it cooled off. Second time I stalled it waiting for a light at an intersection. Luckily it started up on third try after a very loud OH Crap!

Unfortunately not, last week I asked to my dealer, he checked by Fiona's VIN and nothing. And told me if the dealer have no authorization can't do anything.
Also true if you fight for that, you have more chances, in all places over the world..

Thanks for the heads up, still a long way from riding the bike, but I think I will call now for a service appointment. Already had the tire recall to take care of, so will do both at the same time.

46 days before we can legally get out there here in Montreal !!!

I just had all my handlebar switches replaced by BMW Toronto free of charge. I have a 2012 K1300r. They also put a screen insert in the front brake fluid reservoir to prevent foaming. This was also part of a recall campaign. Brand new switches on my bike now.

Dealer replaced mine on my 2009 K1300S when I took it in for 30K service along with hub and fuel pump recalls. He had to check the VIN number to see if my switches were included in recall.

Re: Handle bar switches recall

On Thursday the dealer changed my right and left switch gear on recall, thank goodness they were both acting up. After verifying my VIN the wheel flange on my 09 K1300GT is apparently not part of the recall. I had checked it and found no cracks and the techi checked it as well and confirmed it was in good shape. I guess its steel to begin with

I believe there is an open recall on any of the BMW's with the switch gear.

I just had both of mine replaced on my 2011 S 1000 RR.

No charge.

Re: Handle bar switches recall

Mine (2011 K1300S) is going in tomorrow for this and others:

SIB 33 001 15 (007) WHEEL FLANGE (Warranty Job)

Retrofit Chain Guard SI:11 004 12 (Warranty Job)

13V-617 Check Fuel Pump SI:16 001 14 (Warranty Job)

Multi Function Switches SI:61 005 14 (Warranty Job)

This is great because my high beam switch went out a couple years ago, and I kept putting off replacing it! They said BMW will sometimes reimburse part or all of a recall you have already fixed yourself before hand.

Re: Handle bar switches recall

We had problems with no cranking if bike left in hot sun. They suspected switch gear was distorting. Some guys poured cold water on switches to start engine.

I took my 05 K 1200S in for hub mod. They replaced approx $3000 worth of other stuff including fuel pump on warranty after 9 years.

They lent me a K 1330 R. Guess what's in my garage now ???
