K13S to S10XR!

Hey all,

Due to current space limitations at my new place I just moved to in Los Angeles (coming from Northern Virginia) I can only have 1 bike. I decided to make the move and trade in my trusty KS for a more multi-purpose tool. I didn't want to compromise on sporty, but wanted to get into long distance rides and touring while needing something I can commute down the 405 freeway into LA on for my new job, so the XR seemed to check all the boxes. I really loved my KS and if space wasn't an issue (garage has to fit my bike and my brothers Victory Cross Country) I would have kept her. She will always be the bike I did 176mph on the autobahn on... lol.

I picked it up from Owen at Mamba Motorsports/BMW of Santa Clarita. I think I got a great deal on the buy/trade and took advantage of the free Navigator V promo BMW is running right now. They also ordered the parts for me to add the locking cradle from the GS to the XR.

Looking for a new home:

Nice Odo reading!

The old and the new:

With my brothers Victory Cross Country:

Good times on the KS at the 2012 IBMW BRPR!

Congrats!

Keep the K, tell your brother to ditch the Victory instead.

Congrats on the new bike!

Now if your brother didn't have such a land yacht of a bike then there might be room for three bikes . I suspect you don't ride together very much as the Victory is a tool designed for a much different style of riding (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Haha. You are right. We rode together quite a bit when I had my first bike (2007 Suzuki M109R). I moved on to the K13 when I moved to VA and started doing group rides with sport bikes. I just moved back to CA so I'm staying with him while I figure out where I want to live (near friends/family or near work).

But yeah, he doesn't keep up so well. He keeps talking about getting something sporty when he pays of the barge so we'll see if I can get him on an S1000R or something. He keeps talking about a Diavel...

Indeed... although the motorcycle I think is going to end up being the saving grace with my commute down the 405 and over the Sepulveda pass to Culver City.

Took the long way home from work today and hit up Little Tujunga Canyon Road. I love this bike! Notice the lack of handicap parking Lee!

Did meet one interesting character on a sport bike...

I see you have the top box to keep the S1XR for lane sharing, did you get the matching side cases as well? How does it handle compared to the KS?

I like your color choice, would love to hear of you finding a way of keeping the K.

A great comparison shot. Happy miles together.

I had the top box added at the dealer for exactly that... have some storage for work laptop and things for lane splitting on my commute. I plan to buy the side cases from the European source that Furman pointed out as they are like half price then get them all painted white to match the bike. Not in a huge hurry, probably won't need them until spring.

For me it feels more agile and nimble. Not sure if its the new electronics or what but I havent hit a corner I felt like I was going into too hot yet. I will say the K is definitely more stable at high speed. I had my K up to 176 on the autobahn in Germany and it was rock solid, also no slouch in the corners. I just got back from about 200 miles today through the Santa Monica mountains and I absolutely love the XR!

Nice photos, You'll have to hit Lower and Upper Big Tujunga Canyon, and the Angeles Crest, and the Angeles Forest Roads, for the best roads LA County has to offer.

Re: K13S to S10XR!

I really want to like this bike, sat on it several times, like the ergonomics, footpegs where you can stand slightly, the handlebars look nice, and the brake master cylinder doesn't look like a Urine Specimen Cup perched on the bar. Couple of nits:

The seat seems so damn thin, wondering how comfortable it will be on longer rides ? although assume aftermarket may have a fix in time.

Why do the saddlebag mounts have to droop so much ? The bag mounts on my K1300S I had were barely noticeable compared to these big dang dangling hoops, look like something worn on Soul Train. Are they easily removable ?

Maybe I'm just jealous, still looking for a stable job while the country tries to figure out if there will be a Defense Industry..... Is it November yet ?

Re: K13S to S10XR!

I gotta give it up. That would have been an office shagging, lane spliting, process serving, urban road warrior sumbitch back in the day. The GPS sure would'a been appreciated too.

Kent, just go test ride the demo they have at motorcycles of Dulles. The seat actually is pretty comfortable and mine has the low seat rather than the normal one. The guy at the dealership said he orders them all with the low seat. I might have to get a corbin or something for touring. At any rate, its wider and more cushiony than your damn KTM seat. lol.

Ethan,
I might have to go take a demo ride, and you 're right, the KTM's seat is basically a vinyl wrapped 2 x 6

Less than ten minutes to take off the pannier scaffolding. And thats both sides Actually you can't see them when you're doing warp factor snot, so it doesn't matter really !

And the seat is very comfortable. All day long. The Corbin option looks a bit OTT IMO.

Take one for a test ride.

Indeed all day comfortable - 3,000 odd miles in 11 days through France, Spain and Portugal tells me that this is a very comfortable - and very f**king fast bike.
