2006-2006 BMW K1200GT Phone Mount Options

Hello all, I am a proud new owner of a 2007 K1200GT, and have been trying to find options for mounting a cell phone (I have an Iphone 6+). I searched on Wunderlich.com and ended up buying the mount they say fits, but it doesn't work well at all with the adjustable height handlebars, as the orientation is all wrong, and when I put my phone into the Techmount grabber, it almost completely obscures the view of the onboard computer. I am just wondering if anyone has found a good mounting system that does not obscure the view of the center onboard computer, and is (relatively) clean looking. There seems to be a lack of information on this topic, and if anyone has a solution to this problem, I'd love to hear it!

Thanks, and keep the shiny side up!

Re: 2006-2006 BMW K1200GT Phone Mount Options

Have you looked at mounts that use the mirror mount holes? They work on the 2006-2008 K1200GT, but not the K1300GT. Many of my friends use them for their phones or SPOT trackers.

Here is one from PerfectSwitch, who is a member here, but he is mostly on k-bikes.com:

Here is one from TechMount:

I tried a TechMount mirror hole mount for my Zumo 660 GPS, but it wanted to rotate too much when I pressed on the GPS. I probably should have tightened more, but was afraid to over tighten it. Perhaps a tiny dab of purple or blue loctite would have helped. Instead, I switched to the center mount (between the handlebars) version for my GPS, which I prefer.

Other people get a shelf or mounting bar, and clip all kinds of gadgets to them.

See the attached photos, which is Meese's K1200GT from the 2009 Iron Butt Rally. Note the orange SPOT on the left, which is attached to the left mirror mount hole. (Checkout the closeup photo.) I think it is a PerfectMount post with a RAM ball mount attached.

Re: 2006-2006 BMW K1200GT Phone Mount Options

Thanks for the great info! I've considered going with the mirror mount, but I'm basically only using it for my phone, and since it is the big iPhone, I'm worried about having it be in the windblast. I would love to have a slick center mount for my bike, but the one they sell through Techmount doesn't mount properly due to the fact that the handlebars don't utilize the same design as the K1300GT's. Are you running a K1200GT, and if so, what center mount do you use? I'd prefer one that doesn't block the view of the trip computer, Tach, or Speedo.

Re: 2006-2006 BMW K1200GT Phone Mount Options

I use a rammount for my GPS on my K13GT. It is small, fit in the middle and I can adjust it where I want.

You can use their website, they have a lot of options for GPS and iPhone.

The base I am using is RAM-B-272U, it is small and fit on the handle screew used for adjusting the height.

Re: 2006-2006 BMW K1200GT Phone Mount Options

I am using the TechMount GT center mount on my 2007 K1200GT, which also fits on a K1300GT:

http://pirateslair.net/ZRadarmountGT.htm

Mine is the older version with the rectangular faceplate and the longer adjustment arm, but they are similar. You can buy accessory adjustment arms directly from TechMount. Try calling (866) 341-4192, (407) 654-3322 if you have questions.

See the attached photos of my GPS center mount. My GPS is lower in height than a phone, so it does not block my view of the dash, although I have to sit up very straight to see the clock at the bottom of the K1200GT information panel on the dash. I did it deliberately to get the GPS as high as possible. I didn't mind blocking the K1200GT clock, because my GPS has a more accurate clock in its standard display. The center mount has some adjustability for angle and position, but I am not sure it can be positioned low enough for a large vertically oriented phone in a way that avoids blocking some of the dash.

A friend gave me a Wunderlich mount, ready to go (except for the hassle of routing the wiring behind the dash). One of these days I will get off my lazy bum and install it. I would rather have the GPS up high in my field of view, rather than between the handlebars. It would also provide greater separation between the SPOT tracker in the glovebox and the GPS, and give the GPS better visibility to GPS satellites, which might give more precise location info (helping to prevent those weird "loop routes" on side streets).

I do not know if either one can help with your phone issue, but I hope it gives you a few ideas.

Re: 2006-2006 BMW K1200GT Phone Mount Options

P.S. I forgot to mention that the center mount gets in the way of the key for the K1200GT. I can get around it to insert the key and turn it, but it is a pain. I have been dealing with it for years that I don't think about it much. Still, it is annoying.
