1300 a better bike

Hi All,

posted a similar thread on the 1300S forum;

The K1X00S calls to me every time I see one. I am in the market for one this spring. My dilemma;

Every one I have asked including the local dealer say "go with a 1300, most of the issues have been sorted out". Looking at prices I have seen some great deals on 1200's (more in my price range)

Reading through the posts I have seen a lot of horror stories about the 1200's but I have also seen a lot of threads from people that love them and say they are best bike ever owned etc. etc.

So leaving the 1300 out of the equation, If I were to find a reasonable mileage (under 30K) bike that had all of the recalls addressed and was a strong runner, should I pull the trigger? How many of you that own(ed) and loved a 1200 still love it now and would buy another?

Posting this here is going to get you the same responses you received from your other post.

There are many K1200S's out there that are probably in good condition but they are the first generation and had several issues. Yes many if not all have been addressed.

But there is also the normal wear and tear items you will have to deal with.

If you find one with under 30K miles - then you run into time for the suspension to be replaced - time for ball joints - brakes - possible major service.

So that good deal may not be such a good deal - even if you can do the work yourself the parts are expensive.

I had a K1200S 2007 and had very few issues with it - loved the bike - but then again I never own a BMW that is not under warranty.

Again the K1300 is a better motorcycle - plenty of them out there as well - I know you want to keep it out of the equation but you really can't.

Take your time there are great deals on K1300S's.

But if you must go K1200S - please buy one that you absolutely think is in great shape and that you absolutely think you paid only 50% of what you thought it was worth.

If you're ruling out the 1300 (which I wouldn't), I would recommend focusing on either an '07 or '08 for the upgraded ABS module which eliminated the servo-assist. The earlier K bikes also had clutch basket oiling issues and the transmission requires an undercut to the gear dogs to keep from slipping out of gear under heavy load. These are things that can be remedied, but the cost to fix these would likely put you into the price point of the 1300. My '06 K1200S had the servo-assist ABS module fail at 20K miles ($2-$3K to fix) and the transmission requires repair/replacement at 22k miles (around $2k to have it undercut) and I'm looking to have my clutch basket worked on by a forum member as well.

These issues were mostly resolved by the time they started producing the 1300.

I understand the "calling" of this series of bikes. I've had mine since new and although it's had it's share of problems, there just aren't any new bikes that fit my riding style and preferences as perfectly. I'll just keep on repairing her until there's something "better" on the market.

I was one of those lucky guys. I got a 2008 - last of the 1200 bikes - and it had only 3000 miles on it. It's my second bike (I have 3) so it's still low mileage. I want to sell it but every time I ride it I can't part with it.

Yeah you need one built after October 2007 (08 model). Now figure it is a nine year old bike working on ten years. There is stuff going to be needing help. There is a serious reason the K1200S bikes are priced where they are. You may find a good one. My 08 was not bad but it had plenty wrong with it. No way would I own one again, even for free.
