Drag Race XR vs K1300S

Yesterday we made a short trip to Que Sera a great bikers place just outside Pretoria. I was on my XR with 5000 km on the clock and my friend on his latest gen black K 1300S with 9000km.

On the way back we came to a piece of open double road where there was no traffic and decided to have a drag race once an for all to see how the bikes go.

We red-lined both bikes in every gear and use the quickshifters. He was able to pull 15 m ahead of me and it stayed there all the way to the red line in 6th gear when we had to slow as we ran out of road.

In my opinion there is little to choose between the bikes and it come down to personal preference. They are both extremely exiting bikes.

The K1300 S makes 178 HP vs the 160 HP of the XR and the total weight (riders included) was about the same. There you have it once a for all!

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

I guessing it has to do with gearing or that black is still the fastest color.

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

Interesting test

Isn't the quickshifter just magic

Just curious: Did either of you hit the rev limiter?

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

Fran, my switch light is set to 11 000 rpm so I think I came pretty close to the ref limiter.
I switched every time it came on.
I am sure he got close too but was to busy concentrating to ask him.
He said afterwards he was flat out in every gear.

It is great that we still have places where we can enjoy riding our bikes to full capability here.

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

Did you do it from a standing start or a rolling start?

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

I have a K13S and an S1000R... I agree they are quite evenly matched in a drag race, but in twisties, the K13S will be left for dead...

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

I like the rolling start best. Off the line is so hard on everything. It looks like HP won. What was the indicated ground speed when you red lined in 6th.

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

An XR is significantly heavier than the RR or R. 70-80 pounds more per Sport Rider Magazine's published figures.

Makes a drag race with the heavyweight K1300S closer.

Re: Drag Race XR vs K1300S

Great stuff. I agree that dead stop drag racing is just too hard on the clutch and stuff. Do a rolling start pared up. Like Kneedragger, I have a pair. My S bike is a whizze in the tight stuff. But the big boy takes me to the deep end with the calm approach to high speed that it pulls off. I've been foolish and collecting parts to keep it on the road. I suspect that in a year or two I'll look for a used but good one (K1300S) but, my current friend is the love of my motorcycling life. Then that damn S bike kicks me in the ankle when I walk into the garage. The K bike will slowly pass away, but with enough extra parts in the garage I hope to go awhile. It will be fun to have a 20 year old k bike that can still cause trouble. Never underestimate an old man.

Bruce, we had a standing start.

McWidGlide, I actually did not look but it must have been close to 250 km/h on the clock.
