the XR has Landed

Had a chilly ride down to Houston this am as it was 37f out when I left and of course since I was trading in the K13S I had taken off my gerbings Harness , so no Electrics!!!

Got down to the dealership just B4 they opened and Had all the paperworlk done by 10:30am.
I had to get a "we owe" for the top case as they had to order in a color matched skin for it, that should get in by early next week.
A nice much warmer 64f ride home and on to getting her set up.
So far I have swapped over my tank bag and my Gerbings harness and now I have to start digging thru V-1 mounts to see which one works best. Then time to solder up a new harness to electrify my tank bag since the battery is too far away for the Harness I made for the K bike.

Sharp looking ride Karl. I'm anxious to hear your impressions after the KS. It'll be at least another month before we get out on two wheels .

Karl

Well done with your new bike. I had an XR for a couple of years and it was great fun but went back to a K1300S as I decided that I needed the emphasis on Touring rather than Sport. Don't forget to plug in the Go Bonkers toggle after the first service - even if you never use it, it'll stop you losing it somewhere.

Re: the XR has Landed

Congrats on the new XR!

I was looking to down size in weight fron a kawi concours and fell back aswards into a used 2016 XR with 700 mikes. Well fate had struck because I really think the XR is the best bike i have ever owned by far!

A great deal of versatility in this bike fore sure.

Track days
Tours nicely
Commuter
great on twisters
etc....

solid engine, not detuned from s1000r
love the quick shifter
great brakes
cruise
etc...

Don't let the KS owners put doubts in your mind

just so much to appreciate

and just plain fun to ride!

If I recall correctly, there was a lot of bitching about vibration when these were introduced. Is that no longer an issue...if it ever was?

Sounds like the bar vibration is fixed for 2017 and a kit is available for earlier years.

Oh, it DEFINITELY was on the one I took out for a 20 mile spin. Many report that the vibes go away with miles. The one I was on had about 200 miles. I thought the one I rode was a fabulous bike but there's no way I could ignore the vibes if not fixed.

Re: the XR has Landed

OK have a little over 100 miles on her so far, first impressions, I def wont miss the K13S, this bike is fast and very comfy.
Only riding in dynamic so far as dynamic pro wont be available till after first service. But under hard throttle she pulls the front wheel slightly off the ground in the first 3 gears. Traction control is much better on this bike than on my 2010 S1RR, it settles the front wheel back on the tarmac softly just after you feel it lift off.

The seat def puts you in position when you sit down but it is a comfy position for me and after 90 miles home from the dealer I was very fresh compared to the 90 miles down on the K13.
There are def vibes in the bars right at 70 but they aren't bad and of course I don't usually ride at 70 since the speed limit is 75 on most roads around here I am usually up around 85-90 and she is smooth there.
If they don't get better in time I can always go to bar end weights or Sierra BMW has the rubber bushings that I think are from the 17 for 9 bucks so a cheap fix.
The fueling is spot on and the quick shifter is just buttery both up and down.

AT 6-2 with a 36" inseam I can flat foot the bike but I also am getting some (not bad) buffeting with the stock shield. I think I will get the MRA Vario and be done with it as all reports say that shield is good on this bike.
that's about all the insight I have so far but will share more as the miles rack up.

Re: the XR has Landed

Nice ride, Karl. Lots of similarities to the MTS (except motor). One of the challenges on the MTS was the wind buffeting. One of the better fixes was the Vario with that ugly wing thing on top of the screen. I couldn't do that to the bike so I went to the small Puig sport screen which is about the same protection as a KS. I'm satisfied with this shorty. It'll be interesting to see what works for you.

Karl, you may want to check out the Wunderlich tank bag... it easily holds as much as the Engage, but doesn't cover the fuel cap...

KarlB: Welcome to the club! I've had my XR for just about a year now, and I'm still very happy with it. http://www.i-bmw.com/showthread.php?t=56638. She now had 13,500 miles or so, and is on her third set of tires, Metzeler M7RRs. I haven't farkled it out all that much, but... Latest thing is the beak-mount Ericas and the Billie Jr. tail flashy thing from Clearwater.

You'll have a great time, I am sure!

Fine looking machine bud!

Did the bags match or did you get them painted?

You do realize that you might be riding alone more often... Nobody will be able to keep pace...

Cheers

The bags came matching on the red bike, the top case will also be color matched.
