Akra system - is there a cat?

Hi all,

I'm taking my K1300R to have it's ECU remapped at BSD in a few weeks time and I'd like the bike to be in a state where they're able to allow the bike to reach its full potential.

The bike has the full Akrapovic system with the carbon end can, fitted by BMW on delivery. Is this likely to have a cat in it? If so, what's the feeling on whether the bike could perform noticeably better after removal?

If anyone has any other advice on mods which might free up a bit more power, particularly after a retune, then I'm all ears.

Cheers!

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

I would say no cat. Take a look at their site with description. https://www.akrapovic.com/#!/motorcy...60&yearId=3533

I installed the header section on my S1000XR and it did not have any type of cat what so ever.

Yes, it has a cat. If you remove the exhaust canister, you can see it just downstream of the flapper valve.

[Edit: Upstream corrected to downstream. The cat matrix is located just inside the inlet to the canister. If you remove the noise baffle, you can see it if you look into the the exhaust outlet of the canister.]

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

The full Akrapovic system installed at the dealer is different than the one sold on their website? I have heard that sometimes they are different to get BMW approval.

I don't know about the non-BMW aftermarket system, but BMW bikes are equipped with OE cats, so an OE Akrapovic system has a cat.

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

I thought a "full" system was the the complete exhaust system header pipe and muffler. I just looked up the "factory installed" Akrapovic. And it's just the muffler that includes the cat. My mistake. Sorry for the misinformation.

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

So if it is a Catalytic converter Akra muffler....can the Cat be removed?
My Motorsport with factory Akra muffler fuels badly compared to my K13R with Remus SlipON (NO Cat)

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

I also installed the Acrapovic headers on my XR which removed the Particle burner and Catalytic converter. I also opened up the air intake by removing a restrictor. It is now a different bike. It has more power and tourque, pulls from much lower in the ref range , runs cooler and is lighter on fuel.

I am removing the Emission 4 crap on all my bikes and they all run a lot better and runs like it was intended when the original powers designed them.

Swap them over Randall, see if it makes a difference.

Pretty sure Paul (feral) fitted a "booster plug" too improve fuelling.

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

Hi all,

Thanks for all the responses. Apologies for abandoning the thread after posting. After a few days of checking back for replies, I assumed the post got buried. Obviously I'm just too impatient and need to set up email notifications.

I think I'll take the end can off and investigate properly. There's no flapper on my exhaust system and no baffle, as far as I can see, so I'm starting to wonder which replies apply to what I've got installed.

Do you reckon I'd see a cat if i looked down both ends? Is it even worthwhile removing it if there is one?

Cheers all.

Good idea!

Here's the pics. It looks like it's just a straight through exhaust with a baffle around the outside - just as a token effort at reducing the noise. I can't say I ever thought that it might be too loud.

Looking down the link pipe, I can't see there'd be any room for a cat in there either. I guess that's my question answered!

Just spotted that it's got "Not for road use" engraved on it! Not sure why it says that because it works perfectly well on the road from what I can tell.

I don't know what the UK emissions rules are, and what is allowed and not allowed as OE, but you appear to have a non-OE (in USA) Akra exhaust system. No cat. No flapper valve. You do appear to have an oxygen sensor.

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

Thanks for the info Mike. At least now I know what I've got and that there are unlikely to be any gains found from modifying it in any way - it could do with a few inches taking off it though

I've just dug out the original invoice for the bike from BMW and it's listed as "Full Titanium Akrapovic". Would've been nice to see a part number, but never mind.

Cheers!

Re: Akra system - is there a cat?

I have the same pipe on my KR. It's commonly known as the Akrapovic Raceline system. No cat and generally its not approved for road use (disclaimer)...like it stops us! BTW - far superior to the huge Bazooka that BMW sells IMO.
