K1300R ESA has a Major Flaw

Just purchased a new K1300R a few weeks ago and have done 620kms to date.

Well, yesterday I realized that the ESA has a major flaw and I'm devastated.

Riding with my wife on the back and the suspension set to rider with passenger. We took off for a nice 200km loop and the bike was going great, changing suspension settings from comfort through to sport as needed and everything was fine, perfect.

About a 100kms in, we hit a nasty bump and I lost my pillion off the back.

So now all of a sudden, I'm on the bike by myself and the suspension is still set for two. That's when I realized the major flaw, you can't change from two rider setting to one whilst on the move.

I mean, we've put men on the moon allegedly, but BMW can't work out a system where we can change from rider and passenger, to just rider whilst on the move.

Do you think I should write to BMW? Could this be covered by a recall or service bulletin? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Forgive me for being dense or obtuse, but the pillion came off and the first thought, it seems, is that you cannot adjust the suspension to the correct setting before you turned around?

Lol, i don't mean to sound rude or inconsiderate however this is odd.

John, there is a simple solution.
If the rider in front of you drops a small amount of sand in a corner, that should give you plenty of time to change you Esa settings, or bike, before you set off again......

If you read the owners manual you'll find the system is not designed to switch from solo to two up while the bike is in motion. Not sure why BMW designed the system to operate that way.

Funny that, how often does the pillion get on or off while bike is still in motion???

Re: K1300R ESA has a Major Flaw

I have to agree, why would you need to switch from 1 to 2 while being in motion??

You can also not change the setting to 1 rider and add baggage by pressing the button while riding.

The ESA system works great, and its not BMW's fault.

I guess, you losing the pillion is now making you look for a cause to blame.

Shouldn't you be doing something constructive, like ridding the world of virgin sheep, or organizing the 2018 rally?

My best guess is that the suspension has to adjust the preload on the shock to do this and trying to do it at speed adds tremendous stress on the motor performing the adjustment.

Ifn yer pillon comes adrift after a bump then it sucks to be your pillon and its obviously a problem BMW need to sort out.

Three time yesterday i said to myself that at the next stop i'll change the settings..... and three times i forgot. It's a pain.

Whats the difference between a frying pan hanging on the wall, & a pair of pantyhose?

Nothing, you have too pull them both down, too put the fat in.....

Slightly off topic, I have changed many times whilst on the move from 'Comfort' to 'Sport' back and forth to suit the environment on my K1200S 2005.

When I do occasionally get a chick on there, it's there to keep her there, instead of flying off due to the K's somewhat wild throttle
