XRs first road trip

Finally got to take the XR for its first decent road trip.
little over 1700miles in 4 days of riding.
The more I ride the XR the more I like it.

The haul up to the AHR and back was great. Very comfortable for right at 450 miles on the way up and 550 on the route home , was fresh enough I could have easily ridden more in a day. I had everything from high 80 to mid 30sf with from sun to rain to 20ft visibility fog on Ark 309 coming home and the bike performed great.
Although I thought the bike was a little fuel capacity challenged prior to the trip I found that during a haul it has 200 mile range in the tank running 80-90mph even though I was only on interstates for about 30 miles and major highways for about 100 with the rest on FM roads. Chasing Joe over push mountain and back the fuel range fell off to the 160-170 range but we were not riding at sight seeing pace (or at least I wasn't) Joe was probably napping up ahead of me. .So fuel capacity is not an issue at all for me on it.

Once in the mountains the XR really shined, it def. does have sport bike handling, I believe in the really tight switch backs I am faster on it than I would be on the RR, the wide bars just make the bike turn very easily and quickly and the seating position lets one have a great view of the road so you are not as sight distance limited as if in the RRs tuck.

Did I mention the quick shifter, having an up and down quick shifter is really a blast, as now down shifting for a corner has no effect on the bike, unloading and loading the drive train like a clutch shift does, this combined with the cornering ABS really makes the bike seem much safer to ride at pace

The only complaint I have on it is that BMW put shitty heated grips on it. they do not work like the heated grips on every other BMW I have owned on low you cant tell they are on and on high they barely feel warm. This is true for all the XRs from what I have discussed with other owners.

I think I will be keeping the XR for quite awhile.
after running push mountain
The XR looks like its smiling too!

Sounds like you have a keeper! Push Mountain and alleged stories about a GSA with TK70 tires makes me just want to take everything I know about sport riding and toss it out the window. Great to see you again!

My attorney has advised me to neither confirm nor deny any allegations which may or may not have been made about Push Mountain or any other mountain.

I should have taken a picture of the edges of my tires.........

Re: XRs first road trip

The XR is a fantastic bike. The active suspension is just sublime when it gets into warp speed.

It is my all time favorite bike and I plan to keep it for a long time.

My longest trip was 867 km in a day without any stress. I was good to go after that!

Interesting comment on the heated grips Karl. My S1R is exactly the same. High setting on the K bike would have you backing them off after a while for getting too hot. High on the S bike is just warm and low is probably good for summer!

Anyway, these S bikes seem very zippy and a lot of fun, pleased you’re enjoying it.

Karl, do you still have the stock seat? I love the XR but can only take about an hour and and half with the stock seat. Over the winter I am going to find a replacement.

Re: XRs first road trip

I ordered a Sargent Seat Std. Height A few weeks before the Hill Billy and of course it didn't arrive till I had left on the trip. I found that while on the trip I started to like the stocker well enough that I rode the Sargent once for about 20 miles and took it off and put it in the closet. I will prob. sell it, it isn't bad I guess I just finally got used to the stock or it finally got broke in to my posterior.

Re: XRs first road trip

I tried both the puig race and the puig tour, race was only a little better than stock and tour just looked horrible to me.
