R90s 1976 Color

I just purchased a R90s that will need to be restored. It has matching numbers and other than a Heinrich tank and a lot of bullshit bolted on it, it seems pretty stock. Except the color. It looks like a stock factory paint job. Does anyone know if BMW ever made a R90s in solid black and white pinstriping?
Thanks
George

Re: R90s 1976 Color

They made either the Smoke Grey ,

Or like the one I got , Daytona Orange ,

74-75-76 for the grey one , 75-76 for the Daytona orange .

Thanks Martin
I can't argue with you, you are telling me what everyone else is. Just that when I purchased this bike I can find no sign under the existing paint that it had been painted. When I do the restoration I just want to get it right.
Thanks Again
George

Re: R90s 1976 Color

From my recollection the R90S was offered, at least in the US from '74-'76 and came only in two colors, Smoke Orange and Smoke Gray. Just about every other BMW from that era was black, some with pinstriping. But there may have been different color schemes in different markets. http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/schemepages/schemer90s.htm

The tank on your bike is a Heinrich tank, an aftermarket, and very pricey item, then and now, probably more so now and definitely sought after these days, and its definitely not stock. Here's a bit of info on the tank, http://www.turtlegarage.com/2017/09/...e-accessories/

Re: R90s 1976 Color

Critical thing here is the chassis and engine numbers. They have to match and the numbers will tell whether this is an R90S or an impostor.

Yes I know, its a Heinrich tank. It will be replace and sold. The tank is worth almost what I paid for the bike.

Re: R90s 1976 Color

Thanks for all the info. I saved some of the links. The Heinrich tank info is especially appreciated. The numbers do match.. one of the first things I looked at. Its a real R90s.

Re: R90s 1976 Color

Are you certain that it is really an R90S? A number of bikes from that era have the R90S emblem placed on the engine like yours, but were originally something else.

Nonetheless, keep us informed as your restoration progresses. AND, enjoy it.

It is easy to check by the chassis and engine numbers.

Re: R90s 1976 Color

I feel fairly sure that the bike is repainted.
No stickers on side panels and pinstriping on rear fender is a give away.

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall that BMW never pinstriped the rear fender in this periode of time
There should be one or two stickers on top of the rear fender that where visible when you lifted the seat.

I don't know about the S model but the 90 / 6 was definitely avail in Gloss Black with white pinstripe. I purchased one brand new in 1976.

Re: R90s 1976 Color

Howdy neighbor-

You're gonna spend a lot of money sorting that bike out if you want it to be original, but it will be a fun journey. There are lots of good specialist out there who know these bikes well. Ted Porter is excellent for transmissions and more. I have a friend in Pleasanton who used him to rebuild his R90S tranny.

Also, I'm sure you've seen Ray Atwood's ad in BMW MOA, I've seen his work on three R90S' two TT and one Daytona, this guy gets it right. (802) 434-3956, he's in Vermont.

Re: R90s 1976 Color

As for 90S vs. 90/6.

The bike in the picture has an engine with Dell Orto carbs. These carbs where only used by the 90S. No other BMW from this periode of time had Dell Ortos. Also, the diameter for the Dell Ortos was different from any other BMW, so they would only fit the 90S cylinders (38mm).
