Build Date Location

Can anyone tell me where to look on the new GT, to find the build date? There is a new '07 GT at a local dealer, and I phoned them to ask when it was built (if it is a late '07, then I'd be interested). Anyway, the sales guy is looking for it but doesn't know where the sticker is on this bike (!).

Re: Build Date Location

Bob,

I am not sure on the KGT, but the KS has an ID plate on the frame, just behind the right footpeg area. You can read it by squatting down near the rear wheel on the right side and looking up towards the footpeg in the fender well area....try that!

Re: Build Date Location

What he said. It'll give you the month and year, but not the date. For the date, you will have to inspect a different document (and I find it hard to believe that the dealer can't figure it out (polly just being lazy).

Re: Build Date Location

Thanks guys!! Got it! Turned out the month/year was November '06. This is a new bike being offered at a bit of a discount ...basically they are throwing in the heated seat and on-the-fly-adjustable suspension for free. But it has the older BMS-K controller, and the old airbox, so I think I'll pass and spend the extra bucks for an '08.

Besides, I like the new silver color that now replaces the off-white (that is now discontinued).

Again, many thanks.

Re: Build Date Location

Bob,

Interesting thread for a different reason. Your "interest" seems to be growing in a new GT!

Unless there's a substantial discount in an early, or even a later '07, then if it were me, the '08 would be my recommendation. Figuring the heated seat and the esa together, that would be around $1,000, not really enough to offset both the depreciation on a pre- '08 bike plus the peace-of-mind with a new airbox and the new ecu that comes with the new GT.

Of all the potential new owners that might be thinking of a new GT, it would be great to see you with the bike. And one of the main reasons is that you know what makes motorcycles "tick"! (also you would love how the bike just goes!!)

Getting back to build dates, just make sure you get one, now, that has a recent date on the frame!

Miles

Well, Miles, the interest was there ever since I took one out a year and a half ago! I have recently put in my notice to quit work and retire early, so how could one possibly retire without a new GT??

I agree with your comments that it makes the most sense to get the newest GT possible. It was in fact always my intention, but last week when I took my present bike's Works shock in to get it recharged with N2, I noticed the '07 GT and thought maybe ....! But given that it is a very early '07 model, saner thoughts have occurred. So I will not entertain that idea any more, and expect to go for a new '08 pretty soon. Talking to BMW Canada, they said all their '08s all have the new airbox and other updates, so common sense says, the few dollars I might save by getting an '07, just isn't worth it.

And, Bob, what's one of these terrific events without the other?! Having the time will really give you a chance to bond with the bike! We also retired early back in 2000 and the cornerstone for us is the exhileration of new Beemers.

And let me say, the proper "launch pad" for really enjoying new adventures is the GT!!

Can't help but wonder, though, whether you will continue to reside in the "Blond Bimbo" of Cities? <g>

I'll send you a pm a little later. (for instance, the biggest challenge is paying bills when you are nowhere near home! <g>)

Miles, don't get me going on about this! This place is getting more "blond" and more "bimbo-like" all the time. Must be something about Vancouver that attracts flakes!

In the end, that was my thought too. The amount saved with the early '07 I was looking at was almost pocket change compared to the total cost involved. Penny wise; pound foolish?

A little off topic but if you ever want to know the exact build date and other information of any BMW car or bike, BMW Mobile Tradition will sell you a certificate with the information. I think it costs $90.

And if you're there when they uncrate it, you can collect all the production documention from the crate for nothing!! I collected two or three nice documents out of mine. I know exactly what day mine was built. It was built on a Wednesday and has had none of the common issues.

Cool Re: Build Date Location

I bought mine last Oct 07 and if that decoder is right then:

Chassis number ZN46925
Vehicle code 0597
Series K44
Model K1200GT
Body type OTHER
Catalog model USA
Production date 2007 / 01
Engine
Transmission
Steering
Catalyzer YES

Is this considered good, bad, or ugly.

Have the VIN and want to know specifics? For FREE??

FYI, we have a link in the RELATED pull down menu at the top of every page of our forum that will also give you the same info PLUS a parts breakdown! It is the REAL OEM On-line Parts site.

The RELATED drop down box has some real gems in there!
