Hello from motorcycle hell-Illinois

Not an owner at this time but starting to look. I had 3 beemers over about 25 years. I really loved the bikes and the community but found the bikes to be kind of unreliable. That was tolerable when the dealers were awesome but that started change in the 90s. After a few horror stories I'd had enough and bought an 08 Vstrom. Loved it and got another when they redesigned it in 14 and loved that one more. Been reading about waterboxers and had a rental so now I'm ready to give BMW another chance. I've got what seems to be a pretty good dealer about 45 minutes away. Currently looking at leftover 16 and 17 GS models

Welcome and good luck on your search. I hated the oil cooled boxers, but the LC is a nice motor for sure.

Ahoy, welcome to the site. Can't go wrong with a new GSW.

Why would Illinois be motorcycle hell?

Re: Hello from motorcycle hell-Illinois

Thanx for the warm welcome. I call it motorcycle hell because the only curves in the road are on exit and entrance ramps.
Just Joe, what is it that you don't like about the oil heads? I was considering one of those at one point. They're a little lighter and a little more powerful than my Vstrom- which I am pretty happy with.

Welcome aboard Jim. Don't believe every thing you read.

IMHO, the R1100S was one of the best oilheads produced.

Hey Jim! I never liked the power delivery of the old boxer. It didn’t tickle my jibblies. The new motor is fun and much better in my opinion.

HP and torque on the water cooled boxer engines is higher than on the oil/air cooled boxer engines. My 2002 r1150r only had 85 hp whereas the current r1200r is a 125 hp.

Re: Hello from motorcycle hell-Illinois

Welcome Jim. As a fellow Illinoisan I get what you're saying about our Corn & Bean Fields State. OTOH, Northwest IL between Mt. Carroll, Elizabeth, and Scales Mound is not bad.

The other redeeming fact about Illinois is that you can ride in most any direction and in 3 to 4 hours get to someplace more enjoyable to ride (MO/WI/IN/OH/TN/AR)...thus you have a wider variety of choices than someone elsewhere and appreciate it even more.

Good luck finding a BMW you like. I have a K1300S and couldn't be happier.
