Back in the saddle.

Hi guys, thanks for having me. I'm an old guy, started riding when I was a kid, but quit when we had our daughter. She's all grown now, out of college and on her own, so I finally decided to come back. I have never owned a BMW but always had a soft spot for them, and when I saw my first K1200RS years ago, I fell in love with it. I now own a carefully chosen 2002 and am looking forward to learning about it from my peers.

Re: Back in the saddle.

Welcome to the site Dave and congrats on getting back on two wheels, particularly a well cared for RS!

Couple of things for you to check on, initially take a look on the rider's right side of the bike just above the crankcase cover, you'll spot the gas lines. If you still have black plastic "quick disconnects" on there, you'll want to change them to stainless steel as the plastic ones are known to crack, and as the gas is under pressure, that can provide some excitement. You can source them from here, www.beemerboneyard.com, here's what the stainless ones look like,

also take a look at your brake lines, if they're the original stock black rubber ones, you'll want to replace them too, the original rubber lines are prone to crack or develop pinhole leaks, you can source stainless steel lines from our member Pirate at www.pirateslair.net.

And check the tech forum for lots of "how to" threads.

Re: Back in the saddle.

After I trailered it the 80 miles home, I discovered that little issue! Must have been the jostling around from the trailer ride. I got it stripped down and when I tried to inspect the line it broke in my hands, so those were definitely replaced! Thankful, the brake lines were upgraded already. I'll definitely go poking around in the how to sections for tips as well. Thanks so much for the welcome and advice.

Re: Back in the saddle.

I lived with the paint scheme the last owner had done, but didn't warm up to it. I JUST picked up the body work from my paint guy about 15 minutes ago. I went with the same blue, but in a solid color.
While it's all stripped out I'll take the time to get to know her a little better, and do a few small repairs. I'm pretty sure the fork seals are original, so I'm going to do those, and maybe the charcoal canister delete as well.
