Plastic oil tank dipstick broken

On my new to me 2005 K1200S I found that the plastic dipstick is missing when I unscrew the oil tank plug. I am suspecting the plastic dipstick is in the tank, but I may be wrong. It is impossible to remove the thing through which the dipstick is inserted into the tank to gain access and possibly remove the broken plastic piece if it is in there. How important is it to check the oil level by looking at the dipstick marks when these bikes come with a sight tube on the side of the tank showing Min/Max level in the tank anyway?

Re: Plastic oil tank dipstick broken

The plastic piece is fairly long and i'd say the chance of it making it into the engine is fairly slim, but not impossible.
You would need to drain the tank and undo the suction hose at the bottom and start fishing..... or alternatively get a small boroscope and look into the empty tank.

Re: Plastic oil tank dipstick broken

Are you sure it's broken off? The 2005 didn't have a dipstick. There was a replacement in 2007 for the oil cap, and the replacement had the dipstick.

Also, that little basked in there under the cap, pulls out with some needle nose pliers. (but I bet you knew that)

And it has a propensity to fall in if you don't get a good grip on it.

That's why I removed mine for good on the first oil change
