Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

Angel GT's with 7000 kms on the rear and 12000 kms on the front. As you can see they have an interesting profile (not too many corners out my way) so I'm pretty pleased with the wear so far. The shot of the front tyre really shows up the scalloping.

The Angel GT does not seems to be wearing quite so much on the sides - at least thus far.
More news in March after we complete another tour of the Sth Island - by which time the tyres will have done about 9000kms if all goes well....

Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

I have done a sweet 25719 with my Pirelli AngelGT on my BMW F800ST. A few horizontal slits in the rubber was all that showed wear and 600km later it looked like this. Would the Metzeler competitor do better?

It's impossible to say. You wouldn't get that sort of mileage on a K12 or K13 as they are much heavier than your F800.

A lot of people rate the Angel GT, A lot of people rate the Metzler Z8, me included as I had one on my K1300S. I'd also throw a Bridgestone BT30 into the equation. I have them on my S1000 XR and they're very good. Very similar in the way they work and the feel they give you, especially in the wet, to the Z8.

Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

I'd say you have done pretty well to get that mileage.
Each set of tyres on my bikes has struggled to get past 12,000 kms.
Wear down the middle like that is usually a sign of a lot of high temerature riding on mainly straight roads. My GTs were all worn at the sides before the centre wore out.

I have Metzelers on my other K1200 and they do not have the grip of the Angel GTs especially in the wet. They seem to be giving similar mileage as far as I can tell at present.

Thumbs up Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

Too true. Australia is hot and 40 deg c days for a week or two in summer are common place. As for the straight line stuff yes commuting on mostly straight roads with speed limits that dont allow for much cornering angle and in the 60 zones the roads are two uneven and full of potholes and other stuff to risk aggressive cornering. I went for another set of Angel GTs yesterday and am hoping to get the same mileage out of them. The K13S would need the A rating for the GT and the O rating for the Metzelers.

Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

I am surprised that no one mentions the Continental Sport Attack 2 which was OEM standard on my 2009 K1300S. I have had Metzler Z8's and Michelin Pilot Power 3's -- both very good tires -- but when considering both grip and longevity, the Conti's were the cat's pajamas. I'm not sure why but I never felt that "connected" with the road on the Z8's plus they wore out rather quickly. The Michelin's were very good in terms of grip and feel but they didn't last as long as the Conti's -- the Sport Attack 2's just felt like they had it all.

Absolutely correct. If you go close to the carcass, they all look like that, it doesn't even have to be high speed riding.

Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

Ok..I'll play..Angel GT on GT right now..Great skins...yet thinking of trying the new Metzler Road Tech 01's next time around. (will use the HWM based units- HWM = Heavy Weight Motorcycle), which, according to Metzler's site is the proper skin to use on the GT.

Z6's currently on the RS...will go w/ the Z8's here in a bit, as the Z6's have about 10,000mi on 'em. And Metzler's got a promo going.

Both current skins are Great IMHO...

This is true, one hole, reamed 8 times..... I have been a big fan in the past, but it did affect the ride and maybe I have been swayed to the dark side.

Cheers

Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

Z8 M+O is a great set and still lasts for me after 9000km. Rear is a little bit squared now, but can go few thousands more. I already bought Angel GT set and I will try this next. Someone who wants to buy tyres now should also consider Metzeler Roadtec 01.

P.S. Z6's currently on the 1100RS, they are "nice" on that machine..it's quite a bit lighter, and those skins work really well...yet, will be moving back to Pirelli GT's after those are done...

P.P.S .. run Pirelli Diablo's on the BUSA....it's the kind of machine that those types of skins are made for...not the "longest lasting"..yet GREAT GRIP!! Don't "tour" on the BUSA..it's more of a "play" machine..local twisties...

High speeds have to transfer a huge amount of load from the front tire to the rear due to wind drag.

I got over 6k miles on my Z6s than I thought I would when I bought my bike. Next set were Z8s and ran them for 12K miles....handled easily to the limits of my ability and still had maybe 1K miles left. Now running Michelin Pilot Road 4s and they are smoother and way stickier than the Z8s. I'd buy the Michelins but them what do I know?

Re: Metzeler Z8 vs Pirelli Angel GT

Having started this thread, I'm happy to report back - I really like my Angel GT's after about 3 000 KM. However and so far, I do find them to be a "harder" compound and feel than my Metzler Z8's - this might translate into more longevity but I've always enjoying a "sticker" tire. I've experimented with tire pressure and Angel GT's seem to run better with high pressures where as my Metzler's would feel grippier slightly below spec pressures. In comparison to my Michelin PR3's, the Angel GT's are more predictable but my Z8's gave me the best feel and confidence overall. We'll see how they wear in this season. On my next round, I might opt for a tire with shorter longevity to meet my riding style and expectations. You really don't know how a tire will perform until you ride them out!
