Riding Tasmania

Hi guys, I am about to start planning a 10 day trip around Tassie in February. Just wondering if anyone has done similar and has thoughts on either routes or places to stay and check out.

Thanks in advance

Garry

Hi Garry

Have done Tasmania a couple of times now. Great roads all over. Some of the best include
Launceston to St. Helens via Scottsdale
Lake Leake Rd, don't miss it
The road to Strathgordon. About 160km return trip. Awesome
The A1 through Derwent bridge and over to the west coast
Queenstown to Strahan
From Strahan do the loop around the Reece dam. Do not miss
Lots of options around cradle mountain, Cethana on the way back to Devonport
We like to go across with nothing booked and just wing it for accomodation
Have stayed at Strahan, Derwent bridge, Hobart, St. Helens

There's so many ways to do it and it's all great

What the Doctor said! The only boring road is the one through the guts. If you're going when the Ulysses AGM is on you might want to book some accommodation.

Re: Riding Tasmania

I'm local to Devonport and depending on when you get in I may be able to take you on a day tour on the back roads of the northwest coast.

I would also suggest the Hellyer Gorge (including the Tewkesbury loop), Mole Creek via both the Gog Ranges and Round Mountain and the 2 new Tarkine loop roads south of Smithton.

Also, some of the best roads around here only appear on very detailed maps, Paloona, Spellman's, Gunns Plains, Camena, Fern Glade and a host of others. See if you can find course maps for any of the Targa Tasmania races and follow those roads.

Bert, that is a really generous offer. I will keep in touch as we get closer. I will search the targa maps and see what we come up with. Getting excited now, maps make it real

Re: Riding Tasmania

Be ready for 4 seasons of weather...... went there in 2011 in November (after Snowy Ride) and had snow at Cradle Mountain, and snow down at Hobart (Mt Wellington). Then 43 deg C in Vic on the way back up to Sydney. And some heavy rain days too.
Only other time I've been to Cradle Mountain... it snowed.. again not in winter.
Besides that, the riding is fantastic... watch out for the wildlife on the roads up in the north east... don't ride at night... lots of dead bodies every morning from logging trucks.
Try to ride up to Mount Wellington... scary trip up, worth it for the views over Hobart.
Also ride over to Bruney Island from Hobart, even if just a day trip.

enjoy

Re: Riding Tasmania

Just did 1700 km down there last week with Jenny & Paul (K1300R, VFR800 & K1300S)
All the roads John said & Mole creek to Cradle Mtn.
You cant go wrong really....you could do 2 laps in 2 weeks!
Enjoy

At the fear of being flamed, here goes, anyway.

I cannot say first hand, but from what I have read.

Do not mention incest,.. or two heads; and if asked where you are from,…Australia is the wrong answer. Hope this may help.

Bad man paulmogs! I have a mate in Tassie and when he gets the 2 heads comment he just comes back with "We've only got 2 heads so we have someone intelligent to talk to when we visit the mainland."

Re: Riding Tasmania

We have just returned from our two week ride around the great state of Tasmania, what an awesome couple of weeks.

I will post a full ride report shortly but I wanted to say a huge thanks to everyone for their suggestions it really helped with the planning and a big shout out to Nortonbert for taking us on an awesome run of his local roads. The highlight of the trip was our first day ride with him.

Cheers again Bert, legend
