Sydney Night Rides

Hey Guys

I dont get a lot of time to ride these days other than going to work, the annual rally, and a day ride about every 2-3 months, so i have been riding at night every 2 weeks, mostly on a Wednesday night.
I sent some of the boys a message a few times, and sometimes a few turn up. Hoping we can be a bit better organised with a little more notice than the same day by running this thread. And, we can put the pics up here too.
Its usually an old pacific hwy run, starting at Berowra around 8:30 - 9pm. Expect to be home around midnight, careful, you might turn into a pumpkin if you dont make it home on time. My loop from home is 184km. Tell your wifes/girlfriends that Mat is a lovely guy that doesnt drink, speed, or express vulgarities..... and on that note..... try an keep up, bring some alcohol, and dont be fckn late.... and no going for night rides if i cant come.
Watch this thread, if im going, i will try and put it here a few days before.

Great ride last night lads. Thanks for coming along K-man, Tim, Chris and Fookin Lake Jim.

These light fit in very snug under the K1200S fairing.

Re: Sydney Night Rides

I think your night ride is a great idea - but unfortunately for me - my night vision is really bad - so much so I try really hard to be home or at my destination before the sun goes down.

When I was a kid I used to do night rides all the time - some great memories - with the night rides for some reason came just a little bit more crazy stuff.

During the summer in Florida it was really comfortable temperature wise to get out at night. Unfortunately, the squids come out at night and made riding doubly dangerous. I eventually stopped altogether.

Same problem here Joe! That's why I go on a Wednesday night. Friday/Saturday night there are plenty of bikes up that road, and the little zoop cars, and of course the pigs are out to catch them too. Starting later helps as well, and that is only because I have to feed, bath and get the kid to bed. Works out ok.

Re: Sydney Night Rides

These light fit in very snug under the K1200S fairing.

These Microflooter lights were relocated from the original installed position. They were mounted lower and more inboard and I had concerns that they could hit the guard.

At 55w each side, wiring was through a relay but the wiring was atrocious and looked like it would set fire to the bike at some point so it was removed and the wiring was restored to original.

My new concern was that the heat from the lights in the new position could melt the fairing. They were temporarily connected to 12v and after about 30 seconds the heat issue was confirmed.

New lights will be required then if I want to go chasing Mat around at night.

So, new LED spots were purchased.

Yeah, I know they are only 500 Lumens but I don't need the light 500 meters away, I only need it at about 20 meters when cornering. I also like the size for where I want to mount them.

Re: Sydney Night Rides

Thanks Mogs!

As you can see, I chose to mount these lights up near the mirrors.
I have the 1" mirror risers on this bike. They are made of harder plastic so they were drilled and tapped to make the mount a little more secure.
This ones from the other side.

Used some Deutsch Plugs to wire it up 'cause I have them. Could've used the minis here or sourced the originals but these fitted alright and they were in the garage.

Re: Sydney Night Rides

This is the location of the relay. Get sealed relays if you are using them on a bike. This wiring is work in progress and will look a lot nicer when loomed properly. I use a double insulated twin core marine wire and then I put a braid over the top for looks and protection. I will apply glued heat shrink over the terminals before I put the plastic back on.

Tech Tip: Never cable tie wiring to any oil or brake lines unless the are sheathed. They will wear through in any environment with vibration!

The trigger for the relay comes from the main loom to the lights. I have used the Main Beam as the trigger as I want these light on all the time. I have run a trigger from the High Beam for use in the future.

I also have on order some mini illuminated (blue LED) marine rocker switches for any auxiliary high beam wiring required in the future.

Re: Sydney Night Rides

Here's the wiring up near the battery. I don't really like these fuse holders but it's what I had on hand and it fits OK. I ran the wiring behind the battery and down with the original loom past the air filter. The current draw from both lights is 440 mA so a relay probably wouldn't really be necessary as it wouldn't add significantly to the load on the lights which would be around 4 to 4.5 amps (4000 to 4500 mA). I may want to hang more load on this circuit later. I buy relays in bulk so I test them for load. This one only drew 55mA which won't worry the ECU driving the lights. If you were really worried you could use an electronic relay which effectively has no current draw.

This is the finished view of the install. They are not particularly bright but the beams do project onto the back wall of the garage and are visible through the main beam. Bike is sans screen at the moment as other work is going on.

Haven't had the chance to run them at night yet. Up on Groote Eyelandt for a week or two tying up a project! Back on the big toys!

Re: Sydney Night Rides

Went out tonight for a ride, roads mostly dry, no rain, 18degrees, nearly full moon.
Tryed out Tims idea with the aux LED lights and had them pointing across the bike to light through the corners, that is to say, both lights facing inwards. It worked well, need to find that perfect spot for turn and angle, but definately lights up around the corner well. Problem was, i needed to turn off the usual high beam, because that was just a bright light dead ahead, distracting from the "in the corner view".
Anyway, foggy, partially wet road, creepy kind of night. Took it easy... mostly... and worked on the light positions. Took a few photos with the new Samsung s8.

Radar looking good for night ride

Re: Sydney Night Rides

DNSDC nice work on the lights. I noted that you come from Green point is that near Nowra? I met a bloke called Scot Cole at eastern creek and became friends and paid him a visit while on a trip riding down there and stayed at Green point for a few days a nice part of the world. Scot's a top bloke do you know him by any chance? He rides Ducatis but also owns a K100 regards Dobbo.

Thanks Kman!
Just got back in from up north. Yeah Dobbo, Green Point near Gosford. Puts me close to the nice roads around here.

Louis: I just follow the darkness once Mat's done with it!

KarlB: Signed my waiver at 17 when I bought my first road bike and renew it every time I buy a new one!

KiwiMat: A brief ride last night! these lights are way better than a $60 pair of lights have any right to be. I'm going to change them over from permanently on to a switched high beam activated setup and install something else soon as the running lights.

I'm thinking either a strip LED around the bottom of the headlight or High Intensity LED's in the indicators up in the mirrors.
I'll wire them up to be on permanently but individually switch on/off when each indicator is flashing. Individual relays wired into each indicator circuit using the normally open/normally closed contacts (pins 87 and 87a on the relays). Easy peasy! Gonna have this baby lit up like one of those Manila Jeepnys!
